IPRJINCIUPAL A. W, RI'l TO THE In An Open Letter to America's publis ed in the October, 1948 Readers Digest, General Dwight D. Eisenhower said, o be a good American is the most important job that will ever confront you. But essentially it is nothing more than to be a good member of your community . . Mr. Eisenhower's interpretation of adequate citizenship is precisely the kind of experience we who are responsible for Nyack High School attempt to provide for the young people of our community. As members of the present graduating class, many having been with us six years, some several months, with backgrounds from various corners of the world, you have had the benefit of the Nyack High School program. The fine work that you have done, the challenges you have accepted, the excel- lent performance of the class in the academic fields, in the arts, in vocational train- ing, in the extra-curricular and out-of-school activities, your part as school citizens- merit recognition and Commendation. This part of your lives at Nyack High School has been the privilege of every one of you. It is the kind of background we consider most essential in the adequate character development of responsible citizens in these United States. Every com- munity in the nation cries out for such a citizenry. You have had these privileges. It is your responsibility to maintain them for future generations! ffzfx in

DEDTCATTON STANTON CALLAHAN To the man who has helped so many of us to en- joy our journeys into the past and to be prepared for our journey into the future, we, the class of 1953, dedicate our TOWER. Stanton Callahan, who has taught in private and public schools. since 1932, has been pouring ger- unds and gerundives into the receptive minds of Nyack Latin students for the past seven years. According to Mr. Callahan, empty barrels that make the most noise fill up most of his Latin classes. Besides the time he spends in his famous ninth periods, he is Latin Club advisor and chap- erone on school trips such as Jive Tribe buses. When he first came to Nyack, he was assistant soc- cer coach. Born in Yonkers, he attended Manhattan Col- lege and then took his M.A. at Columbia. While in college he participated in tennis, baseball, soc- cer, boxing, and broke his wrist playing volleyball. He remembers with delight a sociology course where the professor frequently neglected the dis- missal bell. To overcome this obstacle the students purchased two alarm clocks, which they conven- iently set at live minute intervals after the bell had rung, to offer a subtle reminder. The professor, however, ignored all interruptions and continued to lecture two hours longer. Summers Mr. Callahan does surveying and has helped map such roads as the Saw Mill River Park- way in Westchester County and the New York State Thruway. He enjoys, hshing and traveling. So far his journeys have led him through Canada and the Mid-West. His other major interest and occupation is his family. Tim nearly three, Mike, six, john, nine, Gail, fourteen, and Richard, seventeen are enough to keep him busy. The devoted members of Mr. Callahan's Latin classes will refer to him by his nickname Caesar, but we shall all remember him as the fine qua non to our school life.
