M: Kama . . . 1952 TCWER dl rs..-K HAROLD A. FAILING SOLON F. GORDON Education is more than iust reading books and learning words. In many cases, it is training of the hands to be productive and useful. For many moons, three of Nyack's teachers have been doing just this. lt is to these men, from whose patience and experience we have profited so much, that we, the Class of i952 dedi- cate our Tower. To Solon Gordon, Harold Failing, and Shirley Leighton we express our deepest gratitude. Mr. Gordon, printing instructor, and Mr. Failing, metal shop teacher, can both claim the same hometown - Lowville, New York, population 5,000. Both attended the same schools in Lowville and also the same college - Oswego State Teacher's College. After his graduation from Oswego and graduate work at N. Y. U., Mr. Gordon returned to the little one-room school he had attended in his childhood-to find that some of the students were his former classmates. Next stop for him was Nyack, where he has taught ever since. Mr. Gordon and his wife have two children - Alan, 6, and Gerald, lO. Before coming to Nyack, Mr. Failing taught two years in Seacliffe, Long lsland. Aside from his duties in the metal shop, he has been N. H. S.'s line coach for 15 years. Mr. Failing now makes his home with his wife and three children -Ann, Brenda, and John at lOO Sixth Avenue. Mr. Failing and Mr. Gordon often return to their old hometown for a faculty hunting trip, occasionally returning with a rare prize, but more often with iust memories of a pleasant weekend. DEDICATIGN Mr, Leighton, who teaches woodworking, was born in Westbrook, Maine, where he attended grammar and high schools. He likes to remember when Rudy Valee performed on his saxophone for high school assemblies. Following his graduation from high school, Mr. Leigh- ton was accepted at Lloyd Training School in Boston, a school specially organized for teaching ot manual arts. He has also studied at Massachusetts institute of Technol- ogy, Columbia University, Stout Institute and New York University. During World War I, Mr. Leighton enlisted in the Army. He also served during World War ll as a Civil Air Patrol cadet instructor. Mr. Leighton lives with his wife on South Boulevard, South Nyack, where he collects antiques and reproduces them in miniature. At present he is secretary of the N. H. S. Athletic Association. Earlier this year, the club presented a very colorful Christmas Tableaux in cooperation with the music department. It was a production in pantomine, in which the performers stood motionless while a narrative based on the gospel according to St. Luke was being read, and Christ- mas carols were presented by the chorus and band. The Bernhardt's and Barrymore's of 1952 will take their final bow in March, when the club presents the recent Broadway hit, GOODBYE, MY FANCY, a three-act play. The presentation of the annual play has long been a delightful source of entertainment for both the adults and younger people of the community. ln connection with their dramatic work, the Thespians will leave the Teepee in the late spring and iourney down to New York to see a legitimate Broadway play. ln addition to learning about acting, the Thespians take an active part in staging, costum- ing and make-up. Some of the meetings, which are held on Wednesday afternoon, were discus- sions of various types of make-up, and stage settings. Second row: P. fs. ,YY , The Nyack High Football eleven of 1951 was a power packed team running out of the modified single wing and spread formations. Throughout the season the squad, under the excellent leadership of Coach Rudy Reiholec, demonstrated their desire to play the game up to the hilt, displaying fine foot- ball, raw courage, and excellent sportsmanship. This final quality resulted in Nyack's winning of the Rotary Sports- manship Trophy for the first time in the history of the award. Our opponents felt the prowess resulting from deter- mination and the high morale of our football eleven, and they will long remember the squad of '51, Rockland County will never forget the classic game played on the Haverstraw gridiron, in which a heavily favored Raider crew came perilously close to being toppled by a fighting lniun squad. The spirit and skill of these boys was well recognized, for, when the All-County teams were made up, six Nyack players garnered positions on the list. This group included: Bert Leitner, First Team Guard, Jimmy Ridlon, Second Team Quarterback, Bryant Malcolm, Second Team Center, Carl Brooks, Second Team End, Bob Taylor, Second Team Tackle, and Jimmy Brown, Honorable Mention Back. Although their record was only 3-1-3, Nyack can well be proud of this fine spirited group. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL First row: J. Dickerson, G. Williams T. Viola S. Simonds, P. Malcolm, C. Winfred, C. SOCCER After a slow start, when they lost two of our tirst three league games, the N. H. S. soccer team, guided by Coach Frank Nelson, did a complete about face and won tour of the last tive games played. There were 26 boys out tor soccer, with only tour veterans making the starting team. The squad was aided greatly by the presence of three Reed Farm boys-Pluscht, Panolt and Lubinsky-who led the team in scoring with T7 points among them. Congers again won the championship by going un- defeated, beating Nyack twice by T-O and 3-l counts. We split with Pearl River but defeated Spring Valley and Stony Point two times each to Hnish with a 5-3 record. The first win over the Spring Valley Tigers was a major step in bringing Nyack home second. Like most athletic teams, the booters came up with a number ot individual stars. The D'Agostino brothers, Roger and Don, along with Oleg Panoft, who is regarded by many as the outstanding player in the county, made the first-string all-County team. Placed on the second team were Art Hyman, Gennady Lubinsky, and Captain Rudy Ramcke. Jim Gulezian, Jerry Gross, and Vassily Pluscht received honorable mention. First row: C. Orlando, D. The grapplers completed the year undefeated in county compe- tition. In non-league matches, the Nyackers defeated Low- ville, and tied a very strong Watertown club on successive nights. Their only defeat was handed to them by a nation- ally tamous Leonia squad. This excellent record can be attributed to the fact that eight of the grapplers returned from last year's co-champ- ionship team. Among these lettermen are tour individual county champs. Jerry Gross, Captain Al Parker, Stan Met- litz, and Bob Taylor. Also back are Blair Campbell, Bob Shepard, Mike O'Dowd, and Val Dagaev. During the year Gross, who was last year's captain, ran up a string ot seventeen straight victories. Another high light of the season was the advent of a JV squad. Under the direction of Mr. Sam Templin the JV held a number of matches with surrounding JV teams. It is believed by both coaches that this squad will greatly improve the caliber of the varsity matmen by giving the grapplers an extra year or two of actual match experience. First row: B. TENNIS Led by the able coaching of Raymond Wray and the steady play of Mike O'Dowd, Rockland County's Most Valuable Tennis Play, the Teepeetown tennis squad de- feated all fall P S A L competition. This was the tenth time in the last eleven tries that Wraymen have been victorious. In only one season since 1946, last spring, when they ran second, did the racquetmen finish out of top honors. Coach Wray asserts that much of the success of his teams is due to the interest given by players in their daily practice, and to the strength of the doubles teams, which have lost very few matches through the years. As in recent seasons, Pearl River is again expected to be prominent in spring competition. However, Spring Valley, starting an almost entirely green team in the fall, showed good talent and gave most county squads hard struggles. Suftern also booms as a big obstacle in any club's spring championship hopes. Next fall, three strong varsity men will be lost to graduation, but Coach Wray expects the ranks to be filled by members of the J. V. squad. As indicated by wide- spread interest in the fall tournament, from which spring team members are chosen, there are potentially good J. V. and Varsity squads coming in the spring of 1952. However back from last year were four first-stringers, Carl Brooks, Jimmy Brown, Skeets Kelly, and Russ Sisco. Nyack's league opener wasn't very encouraging to lndian supporters as the Haverstraw Raiders edged out the local squad in a very thrilling contest. Foremost in the list ot returning lettermen is Russ Sisco, county champion in the pole vault, who last year set a Nyack vault record of TO tt. lllfz in. ln strong support of Sisco will be Harold Pringle, one of the county's top broad jumpers. Another return will be Stan Metlitz, who excels in the middle distances. This'year fourteen boys started the season and all fourteen finished. It is this per- serverance, loyalty, and cooperation that their coach deeply appreciates. The team, half of which were veterans of the previous season, defeated Stony Point, Pearl River, and Spring Valley at Bear Mountain in the Rock- land County Championship Meet. Captain Stan Metlitz was also selected to represent District Nine in the State meet at Schnectady. Next year's squad, which will be hit hard by graduation, will be led by their newly elected captain, John Bittig, one of Nyacks top men. CROSS COUNTRY First row: R. Merkert, R. Hartell, 5. With a team consisting mostly of veterans, Coach Whitney Callahan looked forward to an- other Rockland County PSAL championship. Al- though the team was hit by graduation, losing N. Rose, J. Boyd, W. Perry and E. Lundgren, they still had an exceptionally strong team. Almost all of the returning tankmen hold Nyack High swim- ming records. Back again to take up where they left off last year are such record holders as J. King, 200 yard freestyle, L. Cohen, 100 yard freestyle, and J. Park, 120 yard individual medley and 150 yard individual medley. ln addition, the returnees in- clude members of the top 150 yard medley relay, 180 yard medley relay, 160 yard freestyle relay, and 200 yard freestyle relay. The team started very strong losing only one of their first four meets, that to a strong Leonia squad. At this pace it seemed very plausible for the Indians to again take the county swimming title. The paper bag, of course, starts at the forest with the logging industry. The logs go to the paper mills where they are crushed to pulp which is the basic ingredient of paper. The finished paper is then shipped to bag convert- ing plants throughout the country where it is converted into paper bags. Supplying the logging industry, the paper mills and the converting plants with steel, chemicals, transportation and power, are hundreds of other industries. Like most of us, you probably take these bags for granted. Yet they represent years of evolution and development. They represent the contribu- tion in labor and skill of thousands of men and women in offices and fac- tories. They represent billions of invested dollars They represent America- and the high standard of living which we enjoy. The huge paper bag industry is part of the America in which you soon are to take your place. Your contribution to it, along with millions of other individual contributions, combine to form the future of America. Make your contribution a worthy one. POTDEVIN MACHINE CO.
