It entered the All-State competition. The open house program was given, as well as the annual spring concert. The Band has played for all assemblies and at a theater program. It has played for all football games. Like the chorus, it participated in the All-State competition and Festival. This spring there was a band banquet for its members. The Sextette is composed of singers trom the chorus. A veteran line and backfield was intact for the league race. The initial blow to championship hopes was struck when Charley Anderson and Cosimo Grasso, regular fullback and right halfback, left the squad, Charley to go to work and Cossie to play for our bitter rival, Piermont. After a desultory start against Ramsey, New Ier- sey, a game marked by Nyack's ground gaining ability but ruined by a fumbling tendency, the Indians dis- played vast improvement, downing Saint Ignatius, New York City. f I-Iaverstraw, stubborn and inspired, threw a scare into the Nyack camp. ln one of the best games played in the Red and Black stadium, Spring Valley, featuring power drives and a razzle dazzle passing attack, fell an upset victim to a rampaging Indian team that could do no wrong. The surging comebacks of the Nyack eleven will be remembered long after the bitterness of ensuing defeats have been forgotten. ermont put up a tough bruising battle. and stemme the Nyack attack until it burst forth with two quick scores. Then tragedy struck. The same malady that has doomed riany Indian victory campaigns struck hard at the Nyac forces. Bewildered and desperate, never able to put together any concerted scoring effort, the Red and Black committed foolish mistakes and fumbled away the one game most desired. Some solace was derived from the great offensive drive of the Suffern game. Here again foolish mishaps gave the Mounties two quick scoring opportunities and theione touclgf down decision. i jx Future Indian teams should learn a lessen from the 1948 season. There is more to victory t n cgapegr- ance the day of th game. Training, pra ice attend- ance and ct rigid ' servance of sleeping ours have given this deserving team the -title t ohe mal ment of lapse spelled defeat, a defeat th t will long burn in the hearts 'of those who were a t, Let the heritage ofthe 48team be: 'play hard, d practice hard., U 3 I . The Varsity Squad contrary to their Weak start will end the sea- son in at least third place in the P,S,A.L. standinas. This remarkable rise to success was due largey to Coach Tripps prompting and the constant practice and labors of the squad. The lunior Varsity have been defeated once all season and their chances for the county championship are good. Clever plays expertly carried out by boys of unusual talent have accounted for their dauntless reputation. Crowds driven on by the air of excitment at the games have rushed on to the floor sec- onds before the completion of the games- the indians have defeated and have been de- feated by as close a margin as two or three points and more pep and response has been mustered at our games than at those of some of our competitors. All of the games have af- forded an evening of unequaled excitement and N.f-l.S. games of this year will be remem- bered as some of the most thrilling ever played. Whob d ' ? This year, however, we feel that their importance should be brought to everyone's attention. It is through diligent practicing, excellent guidance, and active participation that the girls have learned to build up such useful qualities as team spirit and good sportsmanship. The girls are given a goal to strive for in that they must earn one thousand points to become a member of the Girls' Athletic Association and receive their letter. The points are obtained by par- ticipation in any of the many sports offered. These include basketball, volleyball, softball, field hocky, and bowling. As usual basketball proves to be the favorite among the.girls. But this year field hockey, volleyball, and bowling have won almost equal place in pop- ularity. Besides playing intra-school games, we have had several inter-school contests in volleyball, basketball, and field hockey. Many thanks go to Miss Clarke, to whom much of our success is due this year.
