ECHOES VER three hundred years ago, Hendrik Hudson sailed up the river that bears his name and entered the placid waters of the Tappan Zee. The hills surroundf ing the broad bay echoed with the warhoops of Indians and the cries of wild animals. Since then, the redmen have been driven back into the country, the wild animals killed off. Under the hills surrounding the river, the Dutch built a village which rapidly grew to a thriving town. Steamboats, railroads, and airplanes were invented, and the hills now reverberate with the whistles of trains and ferries. Four years ago, in 1930, the hills resounded with an even stranger noise. Listen closely, and you may hear the tramping feet of the Class of 1934 as the students return to school in September. The joyous cries of the girls as they win the intramural basketball championship mark the first big success of 34. You can hear the music of the Sophomore Hop given the next year, and the cheers ring out for the few talented ones who made the varsity teams. The laughs over the A. A. Circus in which the Sophomore class was well represented, evidence another attainment. Ever gaining in volume, come the voices of the dignified juniors, taking parts in the Dramatic Club and Glee Club productions of the next season. More class mem- bers were on the teams, the Searchlight was taken over, and the junior Prom was one of the big successes of the year. Five members were elected to the National Honor Society. As Seniors, the Class of 1934 thundered on. They entered into all branches of student activities, placed more members in the National Honor Society, and put forth a champion football team. They undertook the management of the G. O., and in january left the Searchlight to the juniors and started work on The Tower. Seniors were prominent in the band and orchestra, and played many of the leads in student productions. Will the achievements of the Class of 1934 cease, now that they are about to graduate? Of course not. Year after year, we hope the hills surrounding the Hudson will reverberate with the praise of the members of this class and send out the echoes over the broad waters of the Tappan Zee. 50 154,792,119 Midland Avenue, Nyack-on-the-Hudson, New York, May 81, 1954. Dearest Auntie Matilda: At last, after many years of promising, Rockland County achieved its longed for bridge! The bridge which spans the Hudson River from Nyack to Tarrytown was opened yesterday. Naturally, I, being a Zilch, had to attend. john Weixel, the assemblyman who had the bridge legislation passed, was the man to cut the tape so that the line of streaming cars could pass over. He and john Scott, the engineer who supervised the construction, walked Hrstg then rode the two police escorts-Chief of Police Philip Babcock and Lieutenant Maxwell Fraser. The ceremonial procession included the President of the United States-Charles Tyack-and his cabinet members. Ida Resnick, Secretary of Labor, and Robert Hendricks, Secretary of State, rode with the chief executive. The other seventy-seven cabinet members rode in the next car, with james Foley, U. S. Supreme Court judge. The main speakers and men of importance stopped at the reviewing stand, which was situated in the middle of the bridge. ' Gee, was it exciting! Up over head Hew two airplanes piloted by Raymond Frae and Robert Hunt. Down below was a circus showboat fAuntie, can I go to see the circus when it comes to town?j You should have seen Nina Blumenauer, the fat lady, and Elizabeth Polhemus, the midget. Carmella Renella, eating fire, got smoke in her eyes, Norman Hess was lifting heavy weights. fAuntie, can I go see that circus?j And all this time cars were rolling by the reviewing stand! The first car to pay toll belonged to George Faccioli, the ice man, accompanied by Frances Fuss, the saleslady at Florence Wheeler's Florist Shop. As the first car reached the center of the scene, Donzella's Military Band began to play Stars and Stripesfl All the cars stopped-the airplanes stopped in mid-air! Even the ferries in the George Mathsen lines stopped! The second car was a Packard containing Vincent Collins, of the Collins' Beef Consolidated. With Mr. Collins, rode William Lemm, criminal lawyer, and Herbert Swain, editor of the Rockland Evening journal. They rode up to the reviewing stand where they were seated just in time to hear Reverend Bruce Brown open the ceremonies with a prayer. This was followed by an operatic selection sung by Miss Betty Carlile and William Smith. The speaker of the day was Douglas Brett, Governor of New York State. His address was a simple one, not exceeding five minutes. fThat is unless my David Cox's watch doesn't keep right time., Ruth Weinstein and Leonard Goldstein, famous comedy pair, now playing in the musical comedy hit Boy Bashful, rode past. In their car were Louise Ruby dancer in Kaney's Follies and Grace Foster, blues singer in the same company. 31 just as the car reached the other side it crashed into the roadster of Margaret Stark, who was so busy talking to her private secretary, Lucy Hall, that she failed to give Miss Weinstein the road. Although no one was hurt, the Nyack Hospital Ambulance, driven by Emanuel Glickman, rushed to the scene. Dorothy Abetz, trained nurse, administered the necessary first aid. By the way, I think I'll get a job in Gersham Mott's Department Store. They have an outing once a week. There was a Costino Bluedog Bus completely filled with salesmen and salesladies. Frances Adsit, the notion counter saleswoman, and Archibald Scott, the floorwalker, were debating whether Betty Parietti and Ward Kolyer would win the dance marathon being held at the Tothland Ballroom. Who do you think will win, Auntie? Edith Sippell, the advertiser for the store, was sketching scenery of the river. Her friend, Edith Stewart, who designs all the dresses for the Little Shop, was seated right by the bus driver. In the back, the stenographer, Roberta Hating, and the typist, Frances Hill were kidding around with the bookkeeper, Williain Palmatier. just then Thomas Donovan, who was tight rope walking on the cables fell into the river and was saved by the Olympic champion swimmer, Hope Coffey. fMaybe a romance will ensue!! Also I noticed two bicycles, upon which were seated Louise Phillips who is in charge of the Rockland County Little Theatre, and Leslie Lovett, vice-president of the Fifth National Bank. They were on their way to Sleepy Hollow cemetery where they were going to eat their lunch. Over at the stand, another speaker had taken the floor for is it bridge?j Miss Frances Meehan, a famous welfare worker in New York City, spoke and solicited dona- tions for a new fund. fWhy do most speakers ask for donations, Auntie ?j When she finished, Miss Evelyn Tremper, world record breaker in talking, gave a short four hour speech. A very important car just passed then! Miss Caroline Babcock, ambassadoress to Bflrgrzmly, and her party-Johanna Heft, her secretary, Marion Bush, authoress of the Key-Snatcherug Bradford Dutcher, millionaire newspaper distributor, Walter Fleisher, architect, and james Hesselgrave, Speaker of the House of Representatives. As a matter of fact the next car was also, of the same party and had more notables -jean Wilding, Dean of Vassar College, William Lydecker, New York Curb Wolf, Edward johnson, movie star and Gordon Mott, Spanish Interpreter. An Aunt Gaynor Cake Truck rolled by. Following it was Miss Cathleen Gaynor herself, on her way to a convention. In her Cadillac were Mary Broderick, head of Good Housekeeping Institute, Harriet Driscoll, President of the Woman's Preserve League, and Evelyn Gurnee, owner of all the Gurnee Light Lunches. Mary jane Sweet, candy maker, was supposed to be at the convention with them but as her house had burned down she couldn't go. Mary Doig, usher at the Mulholland Rockland Theatre, was walking across with Mr. Mulholland himself! Scandal, Auntie! 52 Lots of people were walking across! There were Lois Garrabrant, typist to Caroline Petsche, owner of the Petsche Hairdressing concern, Anna Colter and Beatrice Knarich, secretaries to Lester Garber, big butter and egg man, Ruth Fowler, companion to Jean MacFarlane, concert pianist. Then, the most beautiful car I have ever seen crossed. It was a foreign car owned by joseph Guerrieri, the man who has the monopoly on all the drug stores in Nyack. His two managers, Robert Kalaidjian and Franklyn Knarich, with Miss Eltinge Saier, head of all his cosmetic departments, were riding with hm. Flossie Kane, who owns a style shop in Haverstraw fof all placesj was riding across the bridge with Robert Hamilton f'iUncle Robie to the children who are radio listenersj. Ruth Sift, at the reviewing stand, broke the bottle of champagne just a little late but no one minded. fTo get the champagne, the number is Nyack 7-7-9-4, ask for Melvin Greenj. Miss Sift is also a Rockland County assembly woman at Albany, Edward McDermott, celebrated orchestra leader, was simply swamped, when he walked across, by a group of admiring women. Edith Keesler, school teacher, was badly injured when Madeline Parietti tried to get Eddie's autograph. Miss Parietti is business manager to Hilda Kucklinsky, Nyack hotel owner. Her friends Edna Polhemus and Evelyn Prager, waitresses at the hotel and Marjorie Rimmer, bookkeeper there, could hardly keep her back. So what? Gee, Auntie, what you missed! The band played at all of the home football games as well as at the Pearl River game. Its services were again called at the big Haverstraw basketball game in March. It headed the Nyack High School delegation at the Rockland County N. R. A. parade in the fall, and was enthusiastically acclaimed by all onlookers. The Open House exhibit on january 31st was preceded by a short concert program by the band, which included solo and brass quartet selections as well as the music played by the band as a whole. The climax of the season was the excellent concert given May 25 in conjunction with the Glee Club, at which both organizations had the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to interpret music of many different types. Every Thursday afternoon at 1 :45, the students assemble in their various groups. During these periods, they not only have a chance to meet their friends and enjoy themselves but also learn a great deal concerning subjects that they really like. The various assemblies in the senior high this year includes the Chemistry, Sopho- more Dramatic, Senior Dramatic, Typing, Model Making, Art, Orchestra, Reading, Searchlight, and Tower Clubs, and the Commercial Arithmetic, Mathematics, French study groups which are composed of students who wish additional help and work. The Chemistry Club, under the supervision of Mr. Campbell, work on different experiments that are not included in the curriculum of the chemistry course. The Sophomore Dramatic Club under Miss Haynes' direction put on an assembly program of a two act play entitled The Red Lamp, which the audience considered highly entertaining. Mr. Leighton's Model Making Club has had, as always, a very successful year. Models of planes and boats have been exhibited in the trophy hall from time to time. Art appreciation and other various phases of art are discussed in Miss Fisher's art club. Students have found it very helpful in their interpretation and study of this subject. Miss Clarke inaugurated a new idea in clubs this year. Her organization termed The Leaders Club is composed of those who are outstanding in athletics and who have the patience and ingenuity to teach sports to others. The plan is that Miss Clarke teaches those in the club the things she wishes to do in regular gym classesg and they, in turn, instruct the other pupils. Those who are not in any club whatsoever go to study halls. 46 .L ,-riff ff' 'ig ...-.Q .fl ,let ..i ' '-IP T lWlJe1'el Sweepx with fmzjextir czzrre Ike rirer away lo the ef1Jt1uam'. 47 Ilia f O . As well as receiving the P. S. A. L. championship, the team emerged from their schedule undefeated, and with but one tie. Also members of last year's squad, who had had a championship grasped away from their clutches by a sensational Spring Valley forward pass in the last moment of the game, succeeded in squaring their account with their rivals. We are proud of our team, not only for its brilliant record, but also for the fine sportsmanship that was exhibited by the players, through the entire season. This sport had previously served only as an intra-mural sport. About thirty candidates reported to Coach Templin in the call for daily practices and soon a promising squad had taken form. In considering the difficulties that the team encountered clue to its lack of familiarity with the sport, and the experienced squads with which they clashed, the season may be regarded as having been very satisfactory with the Nyack Indians landing in second place in the P.
