The Exit Staff Hours of planning, co-operation, and hard work have gone into the making of this book. lt will stand not only as a memento ofthe Class of l957, but as one of our lasting tributes to our Alma Mater, Nutley High School. ln the coming years, if you read this book with pleasure, and perhaps remember with a bit of nostalgia these days we have lived together, our work will have been done well, To all, faculty and students, to our hard working committees who have given so much of time and effort to help the editors in producing this book, we say a word of thanks. We are grateful, too, to Mr. Farra, our adviser, who gave us his patience and understanding as we worked. The group has conducted assemblies, supervised the cafeteria, and sponsored the Twirp Dance. In addi- tion to discussing and solving student-body problems, the Council also took time to plan the Pep Rallies. I MAROON AND GRAY Represented for the first time in this year's Exit, the Maroon and Gray is the newest extra-curricular activity at Nutley High. After long discussion of the possibility of publishing a school newspaper, the Maroon and Gray became a reality in 1956 with the help of Mrs. Maxine Hoffer and Mr. Guy Tiene. Now one of the principal stu- dent activities, it ably presents information about student life both in school and in the community. By bringing uni- formity of expression to student opinion The Maroon and Gray has helped greatly not only to promote, but also to improve school spirit. STAFF-FlRST ROW: J. Morella, J. Pomaco, C. I CKY, Gi LL fl? 952 Our Party Convention Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina have been invited to attend the first interspace convention of i972 in Mars by Bob Siegel, interspace chairman of the party, We pick them up seated in a rocket scooter newly invented by Vincent Muehter and piloted by John Kerin. They are greeted as they enter by Virginia Quinn, the stewardess, who shows them to their seats. Upon arriving at the Space- port, they are met by the friendly smiles of Judy Nero and Joe DePirri. Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina are then escorted into town behind a mammoth parade led by Marilyn Moebius and Martha Hatch. Behind the girls strut the rest of the twirlers, Betty Krol, Judy LaDucer, Dolores Feraco, Carol Borino, and Elaine ldec. In the band are seen George Shelley, Roberta Reed, and Sharon Beck. When Miss Spallina and Mr. Gutknecht arrive at Paul McEvoy's Space-O-tel, they are given the suites formerly occupied by Huron 8. Saunders, designers of interplane- tary swimsuits. They decide to spend some time relaxing around the hotel pool where Harry Boyko is working as a life-guard. Reclining at his feet is Sally Gilligan leaning against a post displaying a campaign banner boosting Catherine Sendecki for first woman President of the Uni- verse. Being hungry, Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina go to eat at Emil Donatello's Pizzeria. There, they find a quar- tet of singing waiters, John Sonn, Dick Vautin, Al Van Dien, and John Bond. They order a large pie which is made by Carmine Francese, who now wears 2-tone chef's hats, and Ronald Francisco whose sideburns have grown into a beard. Their pizza is brought to them by Ida Naglieri who has remembered the pizza but forgotten the plate. After finishing their meal, they decide to visit Roy Lupinacci's Flying Saucer Inn. They are greeted by Jackie McNerny who has given up her position as receptionist at N.H.S. and is now checking space helmets. As they enter the main hall, they hear the chanting of the Space-tones, Johnny Hossen- lopp, Alvin Jackson and Ray Vaughn all former members of the Octet. Among those sitting around the lounge are Barbara Knight, Florence Aiello, Dorothy Donadia and Ursala Yassa. Howard Francis, the headwaiter, is still seating latecomers, while Janice Scranton puts her Re- freshment Stand training to work by serving their dinners. Running the Refreshment Concession is Bob Feldman. Working for him are Joyce Pomaco, Carol Oliner, Diane Wackenhuth, Madeline Volst and Maureen Murphy. Lined up against the back wall are the bouncers, Don Woods, George Smith and Jimmy Baldino, who have exchanged their bgsketballs for rowdy people. As Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina wander about the hall, they spy Lew Papera, class of '57 treasurer who is now in charge of campaign contributions. Suddenly a drum roll, played by Don Dobrosky, rolls out and Johnny Pucciarello, the M.C., steps forward to introduce the cast of the night's show, Carol Angstadt, Ray Matheu, Bob Messer and Phyllis Yorke, who all received their start in the class of '57 production of Harvey. From the audience comes a continuous stream of chatter from Nina Cullari, voted '57's wittiest. After the play Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina decide to take in a late movie. They buy their tickets from Gretchen Shorter to see the movie The Sheik, starring Joe Miller as Rudolph Valentino, the great lover, and co-starring Helene Donaldson. Ed Pillitteri, who now knows how to operate 72 a proiector correctly, announces the program for the Rock'n'Roll show that follows. The star attractions are Bob Kiellberg and his violin and Judy Hicks and JoAnn Losi doing exhibition dancing. Seated in the audience are Beverly Wilson, Ruth Bromley and Gloria Shepard, all avid rock'n'rollers. Quite exhausted from their exer- tions of the day, Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina retire to Bill Lonely Hart's Dude Ranch, the first on Mars, where they find that Ken Eulo and John Bimbi have given up their drugstore cowboy standing to become the real Mc- Coy. The next day a rodeo is staged in their honor. Among the contestants is Ted Clar, who is now being thrown by the bull instead of throwing it, After the rodeo, they go to a hoe-down where they End Allan Block calling the squares. ln the sets, they see Gene Schreiber and Ellen Paulson, Anne Smith and Ricky Nolan, Bill Senst and Ethel DeRonde and Walter Morrison with Carol Duke. Next on the agenda is a Sadie Hawkins race where they see Judy Bowes chasing the football team. Across the field there is a iunior auxiliary of the Audobon Society-the chick watchers, consisting of Dave Shriver, John Pheas- ant and Ed Mann. The next day the convention is officially opened. As Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina walk to Convention Hall, they meet Louis Venza selling art supplies. Bob Davis and Ed Niedzinski, policemen, stop traffic for them as Nick Molinaro stops his cab to pick them up. They are greeted at the door by Barbara DeHaas who is selling programs. As they start through the door Lori Lichtman and Julia Seibert, now efficient private secretaries to Joe Barone, brush past them, Trudy Lykes hands them a list of the candidates and their platforms which are as follows: Jerry Goodman, campaigning for progressive iazz in all public places, Ronnie Nosti campaigning to have the Gauntlet absorbed by the Maroon and Gray, Dave Gallagher cam- paigning for more red-heads, and Mike Horn campaign- ing for compulsory Charles Atlas' courses for everyone. Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina are conducted to their seats by Sue Clark and Brenda Burgermaster, who have put to good use their training as ushers at N.H.S. Next to them they Gnd Sal Lubertazzi and Phyllis Restaino. As they leaf through their programs, they notice the adver- tisers, many of whom are former N.H.S. students. Among these are Bob Scilleri, now running his own car repair shop with Ed Marion as mechanic, Tony DeRose working for Adler Shoes, and Al Scaglione, now branch manager of American Shops, Tony Winterbottom is now importing English Tea with that famous 'Limey' flavor. The first event on the program is the invocation by Fred Berkobin, followed by the Inter-Space Anthem led by Pat Clark. The keynote speech is delivered by Arthur Frakt who talks on and on lad infiniteml. After a rousing cheer led by Sue Kellett, Kathy O'LoughIin and Lorraine Osborne, the Sena- tor from Indiana, Gordon Gaffney, declares the nomina- tions open. Pat Lufft and Nancy Stock, who are reporting the campaign for Pat Krisam's magazine, rush up to inter- view him and trip over the feet of Guy Segal who has put his cross-country talents to work as page. After the nominations, the convention is recessed for the day. Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina then attend a luncheon at Bob Beer's Beanery in honor of Maria DeMattia and Carl Gardner, who have finally managed to carry on a conversation. High point of the entertainment following the meal, which has been catered by Elizabeth LePree, is a fashion show featuring Peggy Fonz's latest creations as modeled by Carol Tamburro, Judy Fellers, Lois Evans and Mary Ann Nolan. After the dresses are shown, Barbara Bush shows her new line of hair styles. The hit of her col- lection is the futuristic ponytail as modeled by Marilyn Ogilivie. Even though black wavy hair has gone out of style, Betty Fortney is still mad about it. The models' shoes are by Barbara Ponticello and their corsages by Tom Jacone, Patsy Sammara and Tom Cueman who have finally put their ag training to work. Mr. Gutknecht, looking at his watch, suddenly realizes that if they are to ioin the Campaign Rocket to Earth which is piloted by Paul Kidd, they will have to hurry. Jumping up from their seats, they hitch a ride in Bob Schweikert's rocket convertible. On the way up to the launching platform, they are involved in a drag race with Joe Piro, Don Sorce, and Dom Stabile. In hot pursuit is Bob Ott, Space Trooper. Making the ship with only a few seconds to spare, they settle down in the club lounge to unwind. Among the other occupants are Virginia Ko- vach, voted Mrs. Universe of l972, and Dick Levendusky, of'f to defend his broad-iumping record at the Olympics. Outside they notice Ken Ford, Bob DeLitta, and David Schmall leaving to prospect for uranium on Asteroid 999. Soon night falls. As they walk to their sleeping quarters they meet Camille Salvatoriello and Angela Dato, still trying to get an A for bed making in Mrs. Pecoraro's Home Nursing class. Suddenly the lights go out as Kathleen McGinley and Tom Oriel do the impossible, shortcircuit- ing the power system by crossing two negative wires. For- tunately, Ellen Barth is there with her trusty cigarette lighter to show them the way to their berths. Back on Mother Earth, they are awakened next morn- ing in New Orleans by Mr. Harrell, who, having retired to his little plot in Louisiana, is braying out a welcome lDemocratic stylel. Pat Ennis is waiting to guide them to the reviewing stand for the tremendous Mardi Gras Pa- rade. Grand Marshals of the parade are John Aires and Harold Decker. On the Queen's float are Dorothy Daube and Roseanna Niedzinski. On the next float there are several historical characters: Pat Piro decked out as Cleopatra, Barbara Parr still losing her head as Marie Antoinette, and Virginia Mach showing her equestrienne skills as Paul Revere. Guy Caprio is seen portraying Samsonl The next float is en- titled Through the Looking GIass. The first characters are Tweedledum and Tweedledee, as portrayed by Jo- sephine Graziano and Mary Graziano. ln the center of the float, seated around the tea table are Judy Kernolf as the Mad Hatter, Dominick Cucinello as the March Hare and Henry Smith, who, instead of sleeping through Mr. Gutknecht's Academy Award winning slides, is now sleep- ing as the Dormouse. Perched above them is the Cheshire Cat, better known as Carole Grehl. Towards the rear are the Walrus, Blasi Capalbo, and the Carpenter, Janice Plank, surrounded by Oysters, Mary Ann Angrisani, Judy Aiello, Carole Rutnik, Jean Vito, Sandy Capezzano and Renee DeSordi. Another float that Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina take special notice of is the one titled Storybook Characters. The first group to meet their eye is that of Snow White, Barbara Zeidler, and the Seven Dwarfs, Virginia Boyd, Janet Barker, Karen Lautenschlaeger, Judy Laws, Gail Wallder, Sue Carlson and Ruth Gots. Further back they see Rapunzel and her Prince Charming as por- trayed by Emily Richardson and Carmine Lemma. Hungry, they buy a snack from Pat Orechio and Barbara Zorn, who are still trying to get rid of that last bag of potato chips. Standing around the refreshment counter are Helen Werdann, Pat Smith, Ruth Peters and Diane Mannino. After the parade is over, they decide to take a ship to Miami. Their Captain is Reggie Carter and among the crew they find Joyce Haythorn in the galley still trying to flgure out how many hot dogs to cook. Mary Ann Donofrio, scrub- bing tables in the cafeteria, and Corky Serio, captain's aide, casually strolling down for coffee for the captain. Among the passengers are Barbara Siciliano, Virginia Tirone and Marie Trommelen. The ship's first stop is Key West where Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina see Harriet Armstrong working in a date grove and Joe Morella stand- ing in front of Truman's mansion shouting, Save your money, boys! The South shall rise again. At Miami they leave the ship to catch a bus for New Jersey. On the way to the station they witness an accident involving John Valor, who cracked up into a telephone pole as he watched Betty Zito and Amy Cantelmo walk down the street. ln the crowd that gathers are John Voolgaris, Lauretta O'Rourke, Dick Price, Dolores Fenton, and Richard Neu- bert, who are still iust observing the goings-on. As the ambulance drives up, who should step out but Joan Peccarelli, a nurse, and Mary Randall, who has come along to compute the cost for the insurance business of which she is manager and actuary. The driver of the am- bulance is Joe Lupo and his crew consists of Pat McAteer, who takes a man's pulse and subtracts ten for personality, Marie Gramoglia, Barbara Stewart and Gloria Mendez. Since Mr. Gutknecht and Miss Spallina have little time to waste, they accept a ride from Alan Novaco and proceed to the bus station. On the bus they run into Drew Gerber and Bruce Deu- singer who are iust returning from a iazz festival in New Orleans. Other passengers are Annette Dion and Helen Dobrowolski. As everyone relaxes to the strains of the piped-in music, they hear a tinkling of money and then a voice saying, I am the Riche called Phyllisl Yes, folks -this is Phyllis Riche, the first interplanetary woman disc iockey. By this time, they are driving through South Carolina where they see Carole Ehehalt and Barbara Wallace gazing wistfully at a 1972 Lincoln. They reach Washington, D.C. on the Fourth of July in time to see Bob Cook lighting firecrackers at the feet of Ed Deitch, who is delivering a speech about the town where men and women fall down stairs. Vigorously applauding his speech are Barbara Young and Nelson Long. In front of the Lincoln Memorial, supposedly admiring the view in the reflecting pool, are Dave Manning, Andy Compton, Carol Sofield and Celeste Savino. Back in Nutley, Miss Spallina and Mr. Gutknecht are weary and glad to be home, but filled with happy memories of an unforgettable trip.
