THE PURPLE AND GOLD Two of Them As Bill Conrad adjusted the last buckle on his new ski harness, he heard a cry of Look out! I-I can't stop, and the next minute Bill found himself entangled in the snow with skis, poles, and a sputtering young girl. As Bill came out of the entanglement, he gal- lantly helped the young lady to her feet, which she promptly unfastened from her harnesses, and then proceeded to brush the snow from her badly shak- en self and straightened her dishevelled hair. Bill looked at her and then looked again, for what he saw proved to be interesting. The girl had red hair, was of medium height, had sparkling blue eyes, and was dressed in a gay-colored ski suit. ' She gathered up her skis and poles, and, putting them on her shoulder, she said to the surprised Bill. And don't you offer to teach me to ski, either, be- cause fat this point she was scream- ingj I don't want to learn ! And the girl stalked off down the road, leaving a grinning young man staring after her. Some temper. thought Bill as he started once more to Hx his skis. He heard someone coming down the slope and, glancing up, he saw the skier was headed directly for him. Bill decided that to be on the safe side, he had better move. But, as he did so. the skier turned out to be a she and an exact duplicate of the girl who had knocked him down a minute ago. Pardon me, echoed the amazed Bill, but I thought you were someone I knew. As Bill felt his head to see if he was injured by his fall, he saw his friend Dick coming towards him. Hey, Bill, he called. XVhat's going on tonight? Anything special? I just met a couple of girls, twins, in fact-they're friends of my sisters-and I thought maybe we could take them to a show tonight. Well, shall we? he asked as Bill rubbed his head and replied, I'll take the one that doesn't ski. -Irene VVhitehouse. Ah! Sweet Perfume! I Any likeness of the characters to any living persons is herein declared merely coincidental. For the sake of anonymity in our story, we will call our hero Alphonse. Alphonse has a Wonderful tenor voice, so good, in fact, that he recently made his debut on the radio singing a solo over the extensive network VVHEB broadcast from the metropolis of Ports- mouth. In honor of this momentous occasion, he made great preparations in order that his personal appearance would be in keeping with his mental attitude. As he slicked his hair down with his father's hair slickum, he smiled at him- self in the mirror. He had heard that there were some pretty girls around the studio. VVell, he guessed he'd bowl them over looking as smooth as he did! Why, who would ever think that he came from the hick town of Sanborn- ville l just then his sister popped her head in and called, Say, you'd better take along a couple of extra handkerchiefs! You know how you stew when you get stage fright. Get out of here, will you? Can't a fellow have a little privacy once in a while? His sister hadn't seemed very im- pressed by his personal appearance. Well, better safe than sorry. You couldn't take any chances with those sophisticated girls. So into his 111Otl16I',S room crept Alphonse, meanwhile watch- ing closely for his sister. Straight toward her dressing table he sped. In a prominent position was a bottle la- beled Sweet Peaf'
