THE PURPLE AND GOLD ATHLETIC z s ' We 8 Vi M Q Upportunities for sports have increased here at Nute with the addition of a ski team and a girls' softball team. Basketball, which still holds the title of the major sport, is played during the 54 winter months. This year both teams have shown remarkable improvement. The girls, with a squad of thirty, met only two defeats. Miss Whitehouse captained the Q team. The members of the squad had a chance to play in nearly all the games and their opponents were forced to admire the sportsmanship of the team and the coach in keeping the scores as low as possible. Because of the valuable experience the 50 .,. squad has received. the future of next year's team looks bright. Vi 9 The boys. not as successful as the girls. were led by Captain NVarnecke. 24 However, the team earned themselves a steak dinner by winning a larger percentage of the games than last year. The team was composed of several W .,, fi freshmen. VVith these freshmen as future prospects there are hopes and ex- pectations for a more victorious team next year. The success of the teams is due to the coaches, Mr. Anderson and Miss Sherburne. gg In the fall a softball team was organized with Jacqueline Savoie as captain. Though few games were played, both experience and fun were received by the girls. Noon times, activities period and nights after school were spent in practice. 3 The boys also have a large number out for baseball in an organized group. 'l hey Q Z4 play noon times and activities period on the school diamond, and are fortunate to secure the town diamond for practices after school. .M 5,4 Z ,Q S Z Vi 8 A ski team was also organized this year and participated in carnivals here at 3 1 . . , I . . . , Q Milton and in Alton.
