Since only two lettermen were returning who had to be used in new positions, it necessitated the development of an entirely new team for Nunda. We had many interested freshmen and a couple of capable sophomores to fill in the seven vacant positions. ' Bob Thompson, Bob O'Connell, Dick Beardsley and Leon Youngblood were the seniors who held the team together and made it possible for us to have a winning season. Dick Kernahan did much of our pitching: however, when we gOt in a jam, Bob Thompson came in from center field to take over the mound chores. Ken Preston edged out Bob Thompson for the batting championship. Bob O'Connel1 and Dick Beardsley made a nice keystone combination. Four regulars were lost by graduation and we fear two more through injuries. We had a nice bunch of fellows and a lot of fun winning 5 and losing 4. SC OR ES Nunda ll Wayland Nunda 0 Mt. Nunda came up with another fine soccer team, winning 5, losing 2 and tying 1. We went all the way to the sec- tional finals before dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to the Golden Knights of Pittsford. We started the season with a 9-3 win over Wayland before playing afine Fillmore team to a 1-1 tie. The next week We went back to Fillmore and easily outpointed them 9-6. At Wayland we ran into a roughhouse and lost in the last minute 5-2. We then traveled to Hornell and took a 4-1 decision to avenge last year's loss. In sectional competition we beat Byron-Bergen on their field 2-0. We had to play Fillmore at Canaserage in the semi-finals and came up with a solid 3-0 win. The finals were played in a sea of mud at Geneseo and we lost to a good Pittsford team 3-2. Pete Hoagland was outstanding in the goal. Gormel, Preston and Twist were very good halfbacks. Somers, Sny- der, Mehlenbacher, Long and Kernahan did most of our scoring. Many of the boys will be back next fall, when we hope for another good season. 41
