Mehlenbacker, Captain Schumaker, L. Tallman, J. Essler. BASEBALL 1945 NUNDA came up with another good baseball team led by Captain Schumaker. All the league teams except Caledonia were defeated twice, and the season ended in a tie for first place. ln the playoff, Caledonia again proved too strong, as they won easily. Pitchers were Ken Schumaker, Nick Tallman and George Rathbung -lack Essler did the catching with Don Thompson on First, Vinny Crane at second. .ind Nick Tallman at short, while Gordie Mehlenbacker covered the hot corner. ln tlie cutiield were Milt Barron, Jack Sanford, john DeMocker and Pete Di- .N ngelo. For the 1946 season Nunda expects to field practically the same team. Opposition will be strong, as York has the help of Leicester, while Caledonia and Livonia have veteran pitchers back. However, you can depend on our boys for giving their best for the team and Nunda. Season Scores M League Gamesli Nunda Mt. SOCCER UR soccer team took over where last year's team left off and coppcd the county championship without a loss for the fourth consecutive year. York gave us rx scare, as they held us to a -l-4 tie in our first B league game, but in a playoff at Ceneseo. we took them into camp 3-2. ln the sectional playoffs at Rochester, Nunda gave Slim McGinnis' Sodus team a sound trimming in the semi-finals. Churchville proved too strong in the hnals and pulled away from our boyslin the last quarter. Nunda was missing Crane in the final game due to sickness. His pres- ence in the lineup might have made a big difference in the outcome. Gordon. Mchlenhacker captained the team to a very successful season. Tallman, Captain Essler, K. Schumaker, QD. Thompson. BA KETBALL ACK Essler was elected captain of the basketball team, which had a good season in spite of the fact that York beat us out for the B championship. john De- Mocker was the most improved player, as he earned a starting berth for most of the games. The forwards were Mehlenbacker, Tallman, Crane and Sanford. Schu- maker jumped center but was occasionally relieved by Essler or Blair. Don Thompson and John DeMocker held down thc guard positions, while Captain E-ssler was an all around man, playing forward, guard-or center, and doing a good job whenever he played. There was no single star on the squad, but asf a team we were hard to beat, as every man was alpotential scorer..
