This year, there is another link being added to this chain ,which will help to strengthen Nunda Central's charm, even after her students graduate and leave her protective walls. How simple and gratifying it is to open the pages ol a school annual and recall many pleasant memories! With this thought in mind, the Senior Class of 1946 proudly brings forth thistnew link, in hopes that it will be only the beginning of a strengthening tie. 5 O-NONDA-O l DEDICATION The Class of '46 humbly dedicates Volume One of the O-NONDA-O to the boys who attended Nunda Central School and who, in World War II, made the supreme sacrifice, by laying down their lives for their country. 6 ...ll--1 l1 ,lil- 0 -NONDA-0 , fax f- f DQ Dy U-:rf ,fff i2 470 5 A X SX J ,,,sB5'X' f 1 ,1 ' ., H5354 Qi WARD BIRK FRANCIS BREWER DONALD DURYEA ROBERT HOPKINS ARLAND KELLEY STANLEY KLEINHENZ EDWARD WERNER E Ng 7 O-NONDA-O There's magic in the word Nunda! BOARD CF EDUCATIG THE Board of Education in any school has grave responsibilities. It is to them the task of selecting an administrator and faculty members falls. The Board of Education of Nunda Central School has filled its responsibilities well. They have been successful in their duties and have always kept foremost in their minds the welfare of each of the students whose future destiny they are helping to mold, Without the cooperation of the Board of Education, the students would be unable to enjoy the benefits of a well-staffed and equipped school. The Board of Education also has the difficult task of appropriating funds for the school requirements. Thus the Board of Education of Nunda Central School stands ready to open those doors that will lead to a broader and richer education for the youth of Nunda. MANAGEMENT 12 - 0..NQNDA,.0 iii-.-.-.. STUDE T COUNCIL DEMOCRATIC form of government has made the United States the great nation it is today. With thisiin mind, the student council was organized in Nunda Central School in 1931. The council is made up of representatives of each class in junior and senior high school, and members are chosen by their fellow classmates to represent them. The president is chosen by a direct vote- of the entire student body and must be a member of the senior class. The otherxoflicers are chosen from the elected representatives that compose the council. The council discusses matters concerning school functions, gives permission to groups to organize clubs, selects members for twenty-point letter awards, and devises punishment for those students who fail to live up to the ideals of the school. The results during the period of Fifteen years have been very gratifying because it seems that students cooperate more wholeheartedly when they are given some responsibility to administrate. Also the students feel they are being treated more fairly, because their representatives are helping to make the rules. The Student Council members have always given their complete efforts to uphold the honor and responsibility bestowed upon them and this year's members have proven themselves worthy and capable members. ---- MANAGEMENT TT 16 VX O-NONDA-O I7 O-NONDA-O - CLASS HlSTORY President-Jean Stewart Secretary-Bob Hark Vice President-Gordon Mehlenbacker Treasurer-Dick Sheffield Class Colors-Blue and Gold Class Flower-Carnation ADVISORS Mr. Percy MacVean Mrs. Florence Durkce X X I E started in our Freshman class ,as proud as could be! As class officers we elected Shirley Hoagland-President. Allan Sanford-Vice-President, Jean Stewart-Secretary and Treasurer. We were kind of serious and frightened about most things then-our first year in high school. Then came the second year. Sophomores! A whole year gone and we were starting a hard but happy year. Our class officers for this year were: Jean Stewart -President, Bob Hark-Vice-President, Lois Gormel-Secretary, Evelyn Canfield -Treasurer. We spent the year planning on all the activities we would have in our junior year. Along came our Junior year with many activities soon to be engaged in. Our class officers were: Shirley Hoagland-President, Pauline Stewart--Vice-President, Lois Gormel-Secretary, Allan Sanford-Treasurer. Already we had begun seri- ously to plan for our Senior trip, and welsponsored square dances, sold? stationery and seriously planned our budget. We had our first formal dance-the junior Prom-in june, and it was a huge success. We climaxed the year by participating in graduation for the high and mighty Seniors. Our Senior year came at ,1ast, and it has been the most important of? all. We sponsored square dances, sold stationery and Christmas cards to further aid our trip to New York. We had our Senior Ball in November and everyone danced dreamily amidst replicas of turkeys and Pilgrims, to the strains of Gene Zacher and his orchestra. We presented Her Emergency Husband March 15th, and it was received with great applause. We went cn our Senior trip over Easter vacation, and it was all we had ever hoped or dreamed it might be. Now that our yearbook is ready to go to press, we cant' settle back and relax a bit and put all of our efforts toward one goal-graduation-the fitting climax for four years of fun and hard work. 1-1 SENIORS 1- 18 ...L-.-it O..NQNDA-O ------ -LT.. ATICNAL HO OR SOCIETY HE National Honor Society was established in Nunda Central School for the purpose of giving recognition to those students who have been outstanding in character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The members are chosen by the faculty from the upper ranks of the Sophomore, Junior and Senior' classes. To remain in this organization, the student must maintain a scholastic average of 85 and a satisfactory rating in citizenship. During the school year, one day is set aside for the students. At this time the new members don their initiation garb and perform for the benefit of the old members. At the end of the day, everyone enjoys an evening of entertainment. Upon graduation, the Senior Class members are awarded the society Key which signifies that they have maintained an excellent average in marks and citizenship, while attending high school. Truly, when a student is chosen for membership in this organization he can feel that his efforts are beginning to reap a reward. It can really be taken to mean that theyhave been successful in taking the First hurdle of their career and sets up a good example so that they may always seek to attain the honor positions in all walks of life. ---- ACTIVITIES -1- 42 - 0-NONDA-O - I.:-ll In Ifiqlilf-Stanrlfnq' Mr. Zeck. Novemberlthird an all State Concert was held in Dansville, at which students lrom various high schools participated. One of the highlights of the evening was the mixed chorus which numberedfabout two hundred andlfifty voices. Those from Nunda in the chorus were Mary Bennett, Pat Foster, and Mary Louise Thompson. The Spring Concert was presented in May and was really the big occasion of the year. LIBRARY CLUB l'R Senior Library Club was oigginizied seven years ago under the eflieient direction of Miss Ruth Walker. This year. as in past years. we have made book pockets for the Red Cross, torresponded with library clubs of other sehools, reviewed books, Celebrated Book Week. and enjoyed many parties together. We have instituted the painphet and pieture files. and have typed quantities of book eards and pockets. Zoel,.Gautreau. Allan Sanford. and Shirley Hoagland have had the delightful experience of telling stories to the grade ehildren. V This was the junior Library Club's First year. We learned the how's and why's eoneerning the usual library duties of shelving books, stamping and Filing cards, and working at the desk. Some told stories to Miss Knight's fourth grade. .Xrrival of new books afforded an opportunity for further knowledge and infor- mation. The ineinbers of both elubs have found that in performing duties about the library. they have become more interested in the library. Thus, they have further developed their realm of reading. They have learned that the saying, A good book is 21 good friend is true. All the members feel they have gained a valuable experience by belonging to the library club, since it has taught them habits that will be useful all through life. -l ACTIVITIES ----- 45 0-NONDA-O Lrft In Riglzl --TOP ROYY: CI. SENIOR BALL NE of the most exciting activities of our Senior year is the Senior Ball. Form- als, a name band, and super dates are part of the excitement of the evening. This year the Senior Ball was held November 16, 1945. The background was the school gym, which was resplendent with Indians, Pilgrims, turkeys, and corn stalks, to carry out the Thanksgiving theme. YVe danced to the delightful music of Gene Zarker of Rochester. In our estimation, everyone had a wonderful time and came away satisfied with our last real dance. SENIGR PL Y HEN a girl is the vertex in a two sided triangle, things are complicated enough, but when she becomes the center of attraction with three men elaiming her, things really get in an uproar. Along with that triangle, there was an unhappy marriage to be settled, it rioting mother and aunt to appease and 1 wild man from Borneo toidentify and reunite with his wife. There were complications galore but each complication was happily settled and much less seriously handled under 'such circumstances. This year the class of '46 presented Emergency Husband, written by Jay Tobias. The play was presented March 15th, and everyone lauded loudly the eilorts and ability of the Senior class. Members of the cast included: George Rathbung Evelyn Canfieldg Pat Thompsong Bill Thompsong Shirley Hoagland: Florence Yuekstoekg Junior Gautreaug Lois Gormelg Gordon Mehlenbackerg Geraldine Havensg Jean Stewart, Duane SheH'ield. RECREATIQN NIGHT N the spring of 1945, the supervisors of the school decided that one night of a week should be set aside for the recreation benefits of the' student body. The purpose of such a center was to promote friendly relationships among the students and to give them one night a week where they could plan to go to meet friends informally. Under the supervision of Miss Riefer and Mr. MacVean the center was opened last spring. It provides various amusements, such as ping-pong, basket-- ball, dancing and whatever the student might wish to do. It is always under supervision. By creating this weekly activity for the students, Nunda Central had already begun her part in the establishing of a more organized and sensible youth move- ment in the community-a movement which .is so necessary and helpful for all youth of today. ----- ACTIVITIES l- 52 O-NONDA-O V X Easifix ah -sg:f:I'I??' SOCCER UR soccer team took over where last year's team left off and coppcd the county championship without a loss for the fourth consecutive year. York gave us rx scare, as they held us to a -l-4 tie in our first B league game, but in a playoff at Ceneseo. we took them into camp 3-2. ln the sectional playoffs at Rochester, Nunda gave Slim McGinnis' Sodus team a sound trimming in the semi-finals. Churchville proved too strong in the hnals and pulled away from our boyslin the last quarter. Nunda was missing Crane in the final game due to sickness. His pres- ence in the lineup might have made a big difference in the outcome. Gordon. Mchlenhacker captained the team to a very successful season.
