These words penned by Phillip Friedrick Hiller in fhe I8fh cenfur sfi I voice a challen e DECISIONS Life is filled wifh decisions. ln one single day fhe average person makes numerous decis ions, from fhe fime he rises unfil refiring fime. The housewife may have fo decide whaf fo prepare for breakfasf, or whaf fo add fo her shopping lisf. The farmer will decide when fo planf his corn and when fo mow hay. The Bible is filled wifh many accounfs of persons making decisions, eifher wisely or fool fo Chrisfians foday. The message of fheie words draws our affenfion fo Phillipians 3:I4. l press foward fhe mark for fhe prize of fhe high calling of God in Chrisf Jesus. Whaf are we sfriving for? If we are real Chrisfians, we will be sfriving for fhe sfraif gafe fhaf leads fo life efernal. Perhaps we are looking for a place of honor in fhe world, financial securify, or presfige in our social circle. These are inferior goals and are wrong for fhe Chrisfian. These fhings would defain and weigh us down on our heav- enly journey. They would nof lead- us in af fhe sfraif gafe, buf af fhe broad gafe fhaf leads fo desfrucfion. Friend, whaf is your goal in life? Efernify is' involved. ls if fo please fhe Lord? Are you frying daily fo exemplif Chrisf in your life wifh fhe aid of fhe I-lolly Spirif, or are you frying fo please self? -Daniel Sfrubhar ishly. The far reaching effecf fhese decisions had are overwhelming. These decisions are recorded for our benefif, so fhaf we may learn fo choose wisely. , We, as youfh, are consfanfly facing -many imporfanf and far reaching decisions. Cer- fainly fhe choices which wemake in youfh will have a greaf influence upon our course of life. Whaf principle shall we employ in making our decisions? Are we going fo make fhem wifh only fhe presenf in mind or shall we con- sider fhe fufure? Are we going fo allow fhe world fo influence us.in making ourldecisions, or will we decide in fhe Iighf of C5od's Word, and wifh efernify in view? lvlay we ever be enabled by divine wisdom fo make wise decis- ions. Choose you fhis day whom ye will serve. Joshua 24:l5. I g -Pha res L. Fisher PRINCIPALS' AND MATRONS' MESSAGES THE UNSPOTTED LIFE Pure religion and undefiled before ,God and fhe Fafher is fhis,--fo keep himself un- spoffed from fhe world. James l:27a,c. The world abouf us is full of evil. lf's ideals and pracfices are opposed 'ro fhe will of God. The people of fhe world are consfanfly being guided by fhe prince of fhe power of fhe air. This one, Safan, . is endeavoring also fo enfice and lead- away such who have pledged I-heir lives fo be loyal fo Chrisf. Jesus prayed ' I for us, nof fhaf we should be faken ouf of fhe world, buf fhaf we mighf be kepf from fhe evil pracfices of fhe world. True love for -God is fhe greafesf incenfive fo living fhe unspoffed life. Obedience fo our God is fhe greafesf evidence of our love. Lef each one of us fruly show our love ifo Godiby a full submission fo all fhaf I-le has spoken, by confinually being on guard, wafch- ing, praying, and feeding much upon His Word, lesf fhe enemy deceive us and cause us again fo become spoffed by an evil, adulfer- 2 ous world abouf us, fhus causing us fo come shorf of -Gods gracious promise of enfering info fhaf glorious resf provided for all fhose fhaf love Him and keep His commandmenfs. Lef us confinually sfrengfhen each ofher by praying for each ofher. -Benjamin C. Eshbach REJOICE EVERMORE In everyfhing give fhanks: for fhis is fhe will of God in Chrisf Jesus concerning you. I Thess. 5:I8. lf we reallybelieve fhe verse in Rom. 8:I8, fhis isn'f so hard fo do. And we know fhaf all fhings work fogefher for good fo fhem fhaf love God, fo fhem who are fhe called accord- ing fo His purpose. This promise is fo 6od's called ouf ones. If we remember fhaf God wishes us fo be happy even more fhan we do ourselves, we realize fhaf fhe hard fhings are permiffed in our lives fo burn ouf fhe dross so we mighf shine as gold. Neifher murmur ye. as some of fhem also murmured, and were desfroyed of fhe de- sfroyer. I Cor. I0:l0. And why shouIdn'f we be ioyful, when our sins are forgiven, when we have fhe promise fhaf he will be wifh us fo fhe end, and is pre- paring a home in heaven for us? We are ungrafeful fo complain abouf cir- cumsfances when God gives everyfhing good, and confrols all evil. ' And fhe very God of peace sancfify you wholly: and I pray God your whole spirif and soul and body be preserved blameless unfo 'ghggcoming of our Lord Jesus Christ I Thess. -Anna W. Eshbach JESUS TEACHING ON DISCIPLESHIP Jesus made if abundanfly plain fhaf a greaf deal is involved in becoming a Chrisfian. To many people if mighf appear fhaf Jesus made fhe way of discipleship foo difficulf, and fhaf He appeared fo be pushing people away 3 from Him when fhey showed inferesf in Him and His message. This is, of course, nof frue, buf if is frue fhaf He said some very shocking fhings. When fhe mulfifude followed Him, according fo Luke I4, He furned fo fhem and said, You cannof be my disciples. Whaf a surprise if musf have been fo fhe mulfifude fhaf day when fhey heard Him speaking abouf haf- ing fheir parenfs, brofhers and sisfers and 'rheir own lives also if fhey would be His disciples, and whosoever he be of you fhaf forsakefh nof all fhaf he hafh, he cannof be my disciple. Jesus is requiring an undivided Ioyalfy in order fo be a disciple of His. Jesus makes if plain 'rhaf fhere are deep-seafed and far-reach- ing implicafions in discipleship. He makes if very clear fhaf wifhouf faifhful obedience we are non of His. He also makes if clear fhaf discipleship cufs deeply info fhe individual's life, and inferferes radically wifh his former habifs and way of life, and involves recognifion of fhe Iv1asfer's lordship in all of life. -Paul H. Ebersole INFLUENCE Drop a pebble in fhe wafer, Jusf a splash and if is gone, Buf fhere's half a hundred ripples Oufward circling, on and on. Ever wider fhey are spreading, Till fhey pass beyond your sighf, So do words and acfions ever Spread in waves of wrong or righf. Soul fo soul fhe influence passes, Oufward widening evermore, Oh, whaf recordfrhey deliver On fhe greaf efernal shore. Some do nof seem fo realize fhaf fheir con- ducf and conversafion may and do influence ofhers for good or for evil. - All have an influence for good or for evil upon fhose wifh whom fhey are associafed. which nof only fends fo enhance or hinder fheir happiness and usefulness in fhis life buf involves fhe mosf serious consequences imaginable,- even fhaf of efernal desfiny. -Luella H. Ebersole FACULTY EVE.N UNTO DEATH? In fhe sfudyof church hisfory I am chal- lenged repeafedly wifh fhe willingness of sainfs fo make fhe supreme sacrifice of fheir lives for fhe cause of Chrisf and His Church. In fhinking of fhe courage of 'rhese noble marfyrs, I cannof help buf wonder whaf fhe reacfion of our generafion would be foward- persecufion such as fhe faced. Would we as a group be of such caliber as fo counf fhe faifh more precious fhan our very lives? I believe fhe answer fo fhis quesfion is found in how we are sfanding for fhe faifh righl' now. The person who is willing fo sfand for whaf is righf, even in fhe face of opposifion from friends and relafives, is showing fhe same moral fiber fhaf leads one even fo deafh for fhe cause, if fhaf is required. The person who adapfs fo fhe parficular group he is wifh af fhe momenf, yef claims fo have a fesfimony when wifh -6od's people, will be fhe very one 'ro deny 'rhe faifh when fhe heaf is applied. I believe Bible School is a means God is using fo build up our young people fo give a faifhful fesfimony for His name, even unfo deafh, if need be. I believe 'rhis because I seelfolks going from here and sfanding for whaf is righf regardless of fhe opposifion fhey are facing. , May we all defermine by God's grace fo be all Hewanfs us fo be in fhis generafion. regardless of 'rhe cosf. -Glenn lvl. Sensenig , lT'S RISKY If's foo risky fo eal' food and drink wafer. I mighf swallow some poison. If is foo risky fo drive a car on fhe highway, I mighf have an accidenf. If's foo risky fo have a iob, I mighf nof do my work righf, efc., efc. Such is foolish reasoning, we all agree. Buf such reasoning is employed in more imporfanf areas of life. Some do nof wanf fo become a Chrisfian for fear fhey cannof hold ouf fo fhe end. Some do nof 'resfify for fhe Lord lesf fhey do if wrongly, buf if's worse nof fo say anyfhing. Some will nof affend Bible Schoo. lesf fhey discover a needed change in fheir life. If's a risk fo expose one's life fo infensi- MESSAGES fied Bible sfudy and a Biblical fellowship if we do nof wanf fo change. However, if is impossible 'ro face 'rhez re- sponsibilify relafed 'ro fime or efernify wifhouf a risk. By avoiding 'rhe risk we become con- quered. In essence. such-are saying our Lord is a hard man, reaping where He has noi' sown, gafhering where He has nof sfrawed, and likewise incur God's iudgmenl' according- ly. lvlaffhew 25:24-30. God's remedy for risk is revenue or ready refurns. The Efhiopian eunuch who exposed himself fo fhe Bible, wifh Philip as his feacher, became disfurbed, confused, and his normal pursuif of fravel was inferrupfed. He yielded himself fo aufhorify over him as symbolized by fhe rife of wafer bapfism. Buf God's rev- enue for him was a clearing of his m-ind-no longer in confusion or disfurbance+buf ioy in his hearf and fravelling on his way reioicing. The kingdom of God- is nof meaf and drink: buf righfeousness, and peace. and ioy in fhe HoIy,Ghosf. Romans l4:I7. To have peace and ioy is a giff from God fhaf can only be experienced and never fully explained. If may mean changing iobs, clofhing, hair arrangemenf, cars, companions, efc. Yes, if is risky fo be exposed fo fhe Gospel if we we have our mind made up nof fo change, buf if is foo risky nof fo fake fhis risk. -Isaac K. Sensenig SECRETS-REVEALED , Somefimes we wish we would know iusf which da Jesus will come for us. Then by faifh we hear Him say, I+ is nol' for you 'I'o know 'rhe fimes or fhe seasons which fhe Fafher hafh puf in his own power, lAcfs I:7l. We also wonder why fhe Aposfle John was nof fo wrife whaf fhe seven fhunders uffered, and fhen we hear again, fhe secref fhings belong unfo fhe Lord our God. lDeuf. 29:29l. Buf Jesus came and Ieff us, his friends, in on all fhe secrefs fhaf fhe Fafher fold him. Nof only 'rhe fhings 'rhaf had been kepf secref since 'rhe world began, buf also fhe fhings of fhe fufure which are for us and for our children 'ro know. A special blessing is given fo fhose who read- and who hear and who keep fhe revealed fhings. -Oliver M. Keener 4 MAKING STRAIGHT PATHS ln Heb. I2, The aposfle calls us fo a life of holiness of Chrisf Jesus our Lord. The reason here sfafed is so fhaf we have a sfraighf pafh for our feef and af fhe same fime be an influence fo help fhe weak and fhe lame around us fo fhe sfraighf pafh. There are a number of fhings we need fo do fo keep in fhe sfraighf pafh. We need fo lay aside every weighf and fhe sin which so easily besefs us. We may nof despise fhe chasfening of fhe Lord as He endeavors fo direcf our sfeps, and be always ready fo re- ceive fhe confradicfion of sinners gracefully. The feeble knees and drooping hands fhe aposfle falks abouf are somefimes caused by fhe aposfafe condifions around us, which have a fendency fo make us weak in fhe faifh. An- ofher confribufing facfor is fhe lack of real Holy Ghosf Bible feaching and scripfural dis- 'cipline. Here af Numidia, we face fhe consfanf challenge of indocfrinafion, according fo sound docfrine, fhereby creafing a fellowship fhaf is fhe means of provoking ofhers fo also build on fhis good foundafion of fhe aposfles and proph- efs, Jesus Chrisf fhe chief corner sfone. May we all rise 'ro fhe challenge fo liff fhe hands fhaf hang down, sfrengfhen 'rhe feeble knees, and make sfraighf pafhs for our feef. -Sidney Gingrich POTENTIAL 'Pofenfial is a word we frequenfly use in our everyday vocabulary, as well as in relig- ious discussion. If means fhaf a fhing is exisfing in possibilify. Since all humans are free moral agenfs, and we all have, fo some degree, fhe privilege of choice, we may fhen say fhaf a good many fhings are exisfing in possibilify . Jes-us saw in fhe rich young ruler some fhings exisfing in possibilify, and He loved him and proceeded fo insfrucf him how fhose possibilifies could become realify. When fhe young man failed- fo respond as he should have, Jesus longingly looked affer him, unable fo bless as He would have desired fo bless him. Jesus saw in Judas somefhing exisfing in possibilify , and He warned him again and again unfil fhaf which exisfed in possibilify became a biffer realify, and Judas was losf fo fhe cause and for efernify because he chose fo be fhis way. 5 Pefer had pofenfial for good or evil, and because he fook His Masfer's proddings and 'reachings fo hearf, be became a mighfy power in realify, in furning away many fo righfeous- ness. As one looks over a class of young people and sees fhe fremendous pofenfial for good or bad, we can only liff our face and hands heavenward in earnesf pefifion for wisdom fo guide and influence fhese young people arighf. ' Associafed wifh possibilify comes a greaf responsibilify. My prayer is fhaf fhe young feef may be guided sfraighf, wifh goals sef high fhaf we mighf affain unfo a glorious resurrecfion and efernify. -Jesse Neuenschwander THE BEAUTY OF A HOLY LIFE - The Bible sfandard of beaufy and fhe world's sfandard of beaufy are surely exfreme opposifes. The world's sense of beaufy is abominable in fhe sighf of God. We see many who are benf on following fhe fad-s and fashions of fhis sin blinded sociefy. The un- dressing and overdressing of fhe body, deck- ing fhe body wifh all sorfs of jewels, ornamenfs, and painf, ouflandish hair-do's, as well as un- kempf hair on bofh men and women becomes repulsive even fo fhe non-Chrisfian. The Bible says, The way of fhe wicked is an abominafion unfo fhe Lord. Lef us look af fhe Bible sfandard of beaufy. Women are fo adorn fhemselves in modesf apparel having fheir bodies covered, so as nof 'ro make a display of fhemselves fo draw fhe affenfion of men. To have fhe spirif of Hshamefacedness and sobriefy ,, and as Pefer says, fha ornamenf of a meek and quief spirif, which is in fhe sighf of God of greaf price is becoming fo women professing godliness. Likewise, men are fo be busy praying everywhere, liffing up holy hands, wifhouf wrafh and doubfingf' Lives fhaf have been cleansed from sin by faifh in fhe shed blood of Jesus Chrisf, busy doing good deeds for fhe spirifual well being of ofhers, bring honor and glory fo fhe -God of heaven. Lef us endeavor by His help and grace fo give our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, ac- cepfable unfo God , for fhis is only our reasonable service. The Bible says, fhe Lord lovefh him fhaf followefh affer righfeousnessf' -John Wile DIVINE ATTRACIIION Why sfand ye gazing up info heaven? This same Jesus, which is Taken up from you inTo heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go info heaven. AcTs l:l I. There are many aTTracTions Today calling for our affecfions, buT weias Chrisfians need To be looking unTo Jesus, The auThor and fin- isher of our faifh. lf ye Then be risen wiTh ChrisT, seek Those Thingslwhich are above, where Chrisf siTTeTh on The righT hand of God. Sef your affecfions on Things above, noT on Things on The earTh. Col. 3:l-2. Can we Trufhfully say .as PeTer said, To whom shall we go? Thouhasf The words of efernal life. John 6:68. And l, if l be liffed up from The earTh, will draw all men unTo me. John l2:32. ' ' We need To be confinually reminded of heavenly values in order To keep our eyes and mind upon our precious Saviour who has done so much for us. We owe our whole life To' I-lim. Wherefore, beloved, seeing ThaT ye look for such Things, be diligenf ThaT ye may be found of him in peace, wiThouT spoT, and blameless. ll PeTer 3:I4. I -Norman Reinford . i FELLOWSHIP As This word comes To our mind's eye, iT immediafely leaves a warm cosy feeling in our hearTs as we Think of some of The rich experiences we have had wiTh fellow Chris- Tians in The pasT. We may Think of a special Time when God spoke To us aT a service, which changed The course of our lives. Also, There may have been Times when we meT in small groups, wiTh special prayer concerns. Through which we were richly blessed. Again as we consider This word, we realize ThaT iT is derived from The words fellows in The same ship. Thinking Then of fellows in The same ship, we know ThaT They are headed for The same shore. ln case of a sTorm, They will all work TogeTher To reach ThaT shore safely. If The ship begins'To fill wiTh wafer, They will all faifhfully dip ouT The wafer, in order To avoid disasfer in The midsT of The sea. .This should Teach us a vivid spirifual lesson on Chrisfian Fellowship. As The Sforms of Life are raging, we encourage one anofher To con- Tinue in The sfruggles ThaT none mighT sink beneafh The waves. , , ln a more posiTive way, I-leb. I0:25 ad- monishes us noT To forsake The assembling of ourselves TogeTher as The manner of some is. buT exhorfing one anoTher. Whaf kind of ex- horTaTion do we receive in our assemblies? Heb. lO:24 has The answer, LeT us consider one anofher To provoke one anofher unTo love and good works. Before you wenT To a service. did you ever feel as Though somefhing was wrong, or ThaT perhaps you had cooled in your Chrisfian experience? Then during The service you received whaT you needed as a sTimulanT To provoke you To confinuein love, working for The masfer? I We also believe ThaT sinners have fellow- ship when They geT TogeTher, because They have common inTeresTs. They likewise enjoy one anoTher's company in fulfillingfheir lusTful desires. Paul, in Eph. 5:l I, Tells us as ChrisTians To have no fellowshi wiTh The unfruifful works of darkness, buT raflier reprove Them. ,-Clarence E. lvlarfin GREAT NEED or THE cl-lunci-I WiThouT any doubT we believe The greaTesT need of The Church Today is a company of separafed sainfs of God who will refuse To be swayed by The world's program or,iThe visible Church's aposfacy. No greafer blighf has ever beseT The Church of Jesus Chrisf Than The blighT of compromise and conformify To The world and iTs program. , , We are a redeemed people, a peculiar people, and an holy nafion. We are To shine as lighTs in The world and firmly refuse To bow before The gods of compromise and worldly sfandards. The line of difference befween The Church and The world has almosT been wiped ouT, and Those few of Chrisfls followers who dare To be differenf and refuse To go along wiTh The crowd are so small in number ThaT They are looked upon as odd and peculiar, and even fanafical and narrow-minded. IT does cosT somefhing To be differenf and separafe, buf iT is The only way which leads To'The highesT reward. The whole Bible pleads for a life and walk of separafion among believers. Wherefore come ouT from Them, and be ye separafe, saiTh The Lord, and Touch noT un- clean Things: and l will receive ou, and will be a Fafher unTo you, and ye shall be my sons and daughTers, saiTh The Lord AlmighTy. II Cor. 6:I7-l8.' A -LesTer Shirk 6 REMINISCENCE How 'rime flies! Already five years of Bible School are hisfory. Efernify will only reveal whaf has been acccomplished. Many young boys and girls have been challenged fo live a holy life. Many have dedicafed fheir lives fo serve God in a greafer capacify. Oh, how we wish we could say fhey are all living for fhe Lord, buf we know of some fhaf have fallen prey fo our enemy fhe devil, and are living in sin. We do reioice when we see fhose who have been fo Numidia Bible School and are sfill faifhful fo God and fhe church. I chal- lenge each one who reads fhese lines fo pray for fhose who are faifhful, fhaf fhey may re- main, buf especially for fhose sfudenfs whom we know are living in sin. lf we pray earnesfly God will surely answer in due fime. The effecfual fervenf prayer of a righfeous man availefh much. James 5:l7b. -Aaron Weaver SPIRITUAL FRUIT The word fruif in fhe New Tesfamenf is commonly used 'ro describe fhe resulfs fhaf are produced by a Spirif-filled life. The word fruif also presupposes life. Fruif-bearing is a process 'rhaf fakes place only in 'rhe realm of life. In Galafions 5:I9 'rhe aposfle Paul, in re- ferring fo fhe resulfs manifesfed by one who is spirifually dead, labels fhem as fhe works of The flesh. Following fhis in verse 22 he uses one word fo label fhe fruif wifh which a Spirif filled life is laden. He says fhe fruif of fhe Spirif is love. Then he uses eighf words fo describe and clarify 'rhe meaning of love. I. Joy-fhe consciousness of love. 2. Peace-confidence of love , 3. Longsuffering-habif of love 4. Genfleness-fhe manner of love 5. Goodness-fhe acfion of love 6. Faifh-fhe vision of love 7. Meekness-fhe fone of love 8. Temperance-fhe law of love In John I5 we read abouf fhree yields of fruif. I. No fruif. 2. Much fruif. 3. More fruif. Which of fhese yields characferizes our fruif-bearing? ls my life and your life more heavily laden wifh fhe fruif of fhe Spirif 'rhan if was lasf season? -Donald E. Nolf 7 AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST Fellow sfrangers and pilgrims, do you know fhaf you have a very high calling fo fulfill dur- ing your sfay in fhis world? The Lord has com- missioned you fo be an ambassador. Lef's iusf pause for a momenf and fake a glimpse af fhls high office in fhe world governmenf sysfem. An ambassador is a person commisisoned by fhe ruler of his own nafion fo live in a foreign counfry, and fhere fo faifhfully represenf and promofe his home counfry. In orderfor his service fo be successful he may nof gef in- volved in 'rhe affairs of 'rhe counfry he is visif- ing, buf endeavor fo live a peaceful and blame- less life. This gives us a picfure of our greaf calling. Our cifizenship is in heaven. God, our greaf ruler, has commissioned us fo sfay in 'rhis for- eign counfry fo represenf and promofe our home counfry, which is heaven. By God's grace and power, may we keep ourselves unfangled from fhese earfhly fhings and live peaceably wifh all men, as much as is possible, and hereby faifhfully fulfill our honorable calling. -Leighfon Marfin GOD IN THE FLESH ln fhe beginning was fhe Word, . . . and fhe Word was made flesh. l do nof infend fo plumb fhe depfhs of fhe incarnafion, buf would like fo call affenfion fo fhe 'rerms John uses fo describe whaf he saw in Jesus. God had in fhe pasf been preparing fhe way for fhe Saviour fo come info fhe world. To finife minds His sfeps were painsfakingly slow. Buf fhe fime came in God's plan when fhere broke upon 'rhe world fhe flash of lighf we call 'rhe incarnafion. John says, And we beheld- his glory. Whaf did John see? He saw fhe only begoffen of fhe Fafher, full of grace and frufh. As we observe Jesus in his minisfry, as we see him dealing wifh individuals we are conscious of all fhe facfs abouf God, full of grace and frufh. Grace speaks of fhe greaf love fhaf mofi- vafed God in his work of redempfion. Trufh describes God as a God of iusfice and holi- ness. lf speaks fo us of a God whose lighf of frufh exposes all fhe works of darkness. Jesus came fo declare fhe Fafher whom' no one had ever seen. And we beheld his glory, full of grace and frufh. -Harold Good LIBERTY For generaTions men have been searching Tor liberTy. YouTh Today are calling Tor Tree- dom To do Their Thing in This generaTion. The enemy oT our soul does noT wanT us To med-iTaTe. IT is how- ever, imporTanT Tor all ChrisTians, boTh young and old. YouTh musT conTemplaTe, laying The ToundaTion Tor a proper course oT liTe. Older ones need To ponder on communicaTing a True paTTern oT ChrisTian discipleship. While Abraham's servanT was searching ouT a wiTe Tor Isaac, he wenT inTo The Tield To med- iTaTe. He TelT The need oT giving much ThoughT To The TuTure. God had a purpose Tor his liTe. He made ample provision Tor iT, and Isaac needed To prepare Tor ThaT discovery. He had To ponder on TuTure responsibiliTies, and serv- ice. His new role in liTe demanded serious mediTaTion. Upon The appoinTmenT oT Joshua To suc- ceed lvloses, and lead Israel To Canaan, God demanded ThaT he mediTaTe in The law day and nighT. His responsibiliTy oT enTrance inTo Ca- naan, claiming Their inheriTance, and disTribu- Tion oT possessions called Tor much and serious mediTaTion. MediTaTing on The Word brings one To submission and obedience To God. We discover our dependence on God, and The need Tor greaTer TaiTh, resulTing in divine en- ablemenT Tor The Task. David as a shepherd had much Time To med- iTaTe. The godly Take Time To mediTaTe. Ap- preciaTion Tor The ScripTures and mediTaTion Therein yields sTabiliTy and securiTy. Perennial pleasanTness, proTession, possession, produc- Tion, and prosperiTy are The TruiT oT mediTaTion. Do noT simply read The Bible, mediTaTe upon iT. Phil. 4:8, Think on These Things. --Paul L. WiTmer xv lrii-l1.1 T THE RIGHT PLACE Jesus said, l go To prepare a place Tor you , John l4:2. This cerTainly is The righT place. One prerequisiTe Tor geTTing To The righT place is being in The righT place now. IT we Tind ourselves aT The wrong place Through- ouT eTerniTy, iT's cerTain we TrequenTed The wrong places in our lives. The Bible Tells us oT places To avoid. The enemy's Tire is simply The place oT compromise which always spells Trouble. We musT be care- Tul noT To be Tound in The place oT idleness as David. A ship To Tarshish may seem inno- cenT enough, and yeT iT we Tind ourselves There as Jonah, iT becomes The place oT disobedi- ence. WaTch The juniper Tree. iT meanT The place oT discouragemenT Tor Eliiah. There are many more. ' We should be in The way , lGen. 24:27I, like Eliezer. This is The place oT TaiTh. Elisha, was righT There, in The place oT perseverance. To see Elijah be Taken up. Here am I. Send me , llsa. 6:8I, is The response oT a person in The place oT conTribuTion and service. The saying you c-an'T be in Two places aT one Time applies, if we are in The righT place Jesus will receive us as He said, where I am There ye may be also. John l4:3. -Alvin Snyder 8 LORD . . . OPEN HIS EYES IT is probable ThaT The young man Tor whom This plea was made had TwenTy-TwenTy vision. He saw'The Syrian horses and charioTs. BuT aTTer TheiLord inTervened, he saw more: he saw horses and charioTs oT Tire round abouT Elisha lll Kings 6:I7l. Years ago iT was a common pracTice To puT mules To work in coal mines. When a mule was sTill young, iT would be lowered inTo a mine and- There iT would remain unTil Tor some reason, iT was no longer serviceable. IT was soon discovered ThaT when These mules were again broughT up inTo The lighT oT day Their abiliTy To see was gone. They had been Too long in The dark. Many oT us, when we came To The Lord, were like The mules. We had been in The dark Too long. We sTill had physical sighT. We had even more. We could see, as Tar as a mile away, an opporTuniTy To become popular, To geT rich, or To gain pleasure. Every obsTacle in our self-chosen paTh, we saw clearly. Our vision was broad enough To Take in The whole Tield oT sporTs, or maybe iT was T-he Tashion or enTerTainmenT world. BuT sTill we were blind. We were blind To our selTishness, blind To The consequences oT sin, blind To The cheapness oT worldly honor. blind To whaT we could become in ChrisT. SpiriTually, we were blind. Has The Lord opened your eyes? Does The spiriTual world lie open To your view? An elderly ChrisTian lady was inTormed ThaT she was TasT losing her sighT. Her response was so Thoroughly ChrisTian ThaT The examining docTor was moved To make This remark: Your eye- sighf may be poor, buT your vision is good. -Merle RuTh COOPERATION Nearly every area oT liTe, wheTher business, home, school, or church - liTe will noT reall be successTul wiThouT good cooperaTion oT all Those involved. There are Two super powers making an appeal Tor our cooperaTion. God placed our TirsT parenTs in The garden wiTh insTrucTions To dress and To keep iT. They had The privilege oT eaTing TruiT Trom every Tree buT one, wiTh The warning oT The resulTs if They would noT cooperaTe. SaTan came on The scene, puT in his bid Tor cooperaTion, and won. The resulT 9 was ThaT They were driven Trom The place God had so graciously provided Tor Them. God called Moses and Aaron To lead The children oT Israel ouT OT EgypT. He called Joshua To lead Them across Jordan inTo The land promised To Them. In eiTher case, God demanded- Tull cooperaTion Tor Tinal success, and SaTan made his appeal and causedserious Tailures. Jesus, when calling his disciples, said, lT you will Tollow Me, I will make you To become Tishers oT men. This meanT cooperaTion, and one oT These men insTead cooperaTed wiTh SaTan To The cruciTixion oT The one who had called him. IT SaTan is noT aTraid To make his appeal Tor cooperaTion To The Son oT God lMaTT. 4:I-l Il, we can be sure he will noT be aTraid oT us. May we noT TorgeT ThaT SaTan is our per- sonal enemy. BuT God has provided Tull pro- TecTion. May we noT Tail To use iT. -Edwin H. Gehman BEARING FRUIT LeT us Think oT The TiTTeenTh chapTer oT John as The TruiT bearing chapTer. IT speaks oT The True vine, The husbandman, and The branches. Seven Times reTerence is made To The TacT ThaT The branches are To bear TruiT. WhaT is The TruiT The branches are To bear? IT is inTeresTing To compare This Teaching wiTh chapTer Tive oT Isaiah. There we read oT a vineyard in a very TruiTTul hill. Every provision was made ThaT iT mighT produce, buT iT broughT TorTh wild grapes. There iT is The choicesT vine, no doubT represenTing The besT oT human eTTorTg here iT is The True vine, Jesus HimselT. The True vine Teeds liTe inTo The branch, The source oT which is divine raTher Than human. The secreT oT bearing TruiT is abiding in The vine, and The TruiT iTselT is love. This is my commandmenT, ThaT ye love one anoTher, as I have loved you. John I5:I2. How simple! BuT only as divine love is shed abroad in our hearTs are we able To do iT. This divine love seekeTh noT her own. 'Do you? --Henry Weaver Whether therefore ye eatg or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. I Corinthians 10:31 REFLECTORS Our Lord Jesus Chrisf opened His prayer in John I7 wifh a desire fhaf should possess each of our hearfs. Fafher . 4 . glorify Thy Son, fhaf fhy Son also may glorify fhee. Jesus wanfed fo be a Reflecfor of His Fafher's glory and He knew fhaf fhe only way He could do fhis was fo be a possessor of fhaf glory Himself. His desire was granfed, and He was able fo be fhe express image and reflecfion of God's person while He was here on earfh. The early disciples of Jesus possessed fhis same desires for fhe glory of fheir Lord fo be upon fhem, and fhey were able fo duplicafe fhe life of Jesus so fully fhaf people 'look knowledge of fhem fhaf fhey had been wifh Jesus and began calling fhem Chrisf-ians. Today's world- needs youfh whose supreme obiecfive is fo possess fhe glorious Spirif of Jesus and be frue Reflecfors of fhal' glory in a life of holiness obedience, purify, wifness, service, nonresisfance, and separafion from fhe world. Lef fhe beaufy of Jesus be seen in me, All His wonderful passion and purify, . O Thou Spirif Divine. all my nafure refine- Till fhe beaufy of Jesus be seen in me. -Aaron M. The purpose for This book is ouTlined in chapfer 2O:3O.3I. , And many oTher signs Truly did Jesus- in The presence of his disciples, which are noT wriTTen in This book: BuT These are wriTTen ThaT ye mighT believe ThaT Jesus is The ChrisT, The Son of God: and believing ye mighT have life Through his name. We Took special noTice,of The eighT signs in works, and eighT signs in words, ThaT are recorded for us. His works were mosTly mir- acles in which Jesus meT The needs of man while showing His claim of Son-ship: Thereby urging Them To believe on Him. 'His words were The uTTerances of The greaT I Am's which showed To us ThaT Jesus is eTernaI. Before Abraham was, I Am. One reason Jesus came in The flesh was To reveal The hearT Ilovel of The FaTher. He porfrayed ThaT love as one ThaT is resTless because of sin. His life and Teaching broughT people To a per- sonal crisis which issued forfh inTo decisions among Them. The book was noT exhausTed-, buT enough was uncovered To cause a conTinual sTud.y of The life of Jesus as He ushered in Theifonly way ThaT we can now be iusfified. -Boyd Y. Campbell . COLOSSIANS AND PHILEMON Our class was TaughT by BroTher Paul WiT- mer. We sfudied Colossians firsf, The-n Phil- mon. The firsT few days were spenT in liTerally Taking each verse aparT, buT we discovered we had To move along a IiTTIe fasTer in order To geT Through before The end of Bible School. Colossians was wriTTen by The Aposfle Paul probably beween 60-64 A.D. Verses I and 5 in 'chapTer Two seem To indicaTe ThaT Paul was ,never To see Them in person. buT we have reason To believe ThaT he may have sfopped There while passing close by, and ThaT iT was noT'recorded in The Bible. I9 ' BIBLE. STUDY 'Colossians in general is a 'message of good will and a book of exhorTaTion. IT' also em- phasizes ChrisT as The head of The Church. A few special reasons ThaT Paul had for This. leTTer was To correcT some errors ThaT were prevalenf among Them, such as The influence of philosophy and The Tradifions of men, and The facT ThaT They insisTed on Jewish riTes and ceremonies. This was noT bringing glory To ChrisT. In The concluding chapTers we find Chris- Tian duTies, such as having our affecTion seT on Things above and morfifying The deeds of The flesh. We can also find pracTical admon- iTion on The duTies of The ChrisTian family, and The duTies of masfers. The EpisT'e To Philemon was also wriTTen by Paul. There is an inTeresTing sTory in back of This leTTer abouT Philemon's former slave. Onesimus. He ran away from Philemon and laTer- came under PauI's minisTry and was converTed. So Paul wroTe This beaufiful leTTer of inTer- cession To plead wiTh Philemon To resfore One- simus back- To his favor. IT is Truly a beauTifuI sTory of God's wondrous ways in The lives of Those who yield 'Their lives To Him. -Mary Ann Fisher 1i- SERMON ON THE MOUNT This class was TaughT by BroTher Norman Reinford. The Sermon on The IvIounT fs Taken from Iv1aTThew 5, 6, and 7. IT'sia very pracTical sTudy TaughT by Jesus To his disciples, buT is a perfecT sTandard for us as Chrisfians Today. This sTudy deals largely wiTh our aTTiTudes Toward Things and one anoTher.l How can we have a righT reIaTionship wiTh God if we have improper aTiTudes Toward our fellow- man? Anofher pracTical aspecT of This sTud-y is having proper moTives for our acTions. Do we do The Things we do in humbleness of hearT To glorify God or iusT To be seen of men? ' -Irene HaITeman y I AND Il PETER l and ll Pefer proved fo be a valuable sfudy for abouf 25 sfudenfs. The firsf book was wrif- fen as an exhorfafion fo esfablish and sfrengfh- en suffering Chrisfians who were scaffered by persecution. The second book deals more wifh fhe prophecy of corrupf feachers and scoffers. As we looked af various -subiecfs from fhese fwo books' we especially noficed fhe sufficiency of God's grace for any sifuafion. One of fhe quesfions fhaf arose was in regards fo fhe elec'r according fo fhe fore- knowledge of God in chuapfer l:2. We were impressed fo nofice fhe consisfency of fhe Scripfures on fhis subiecf which is so offen mis- inferprefed. Pefer makes if clear fhaf we are elecf fhrough sancfificafion and obedience. Our feacher, Brofher Clarence Good, also refreshed our minds wifh, fhe imporfance of a Godly home. Bofh fhe husband and wife have a, greaf responsibilify in making fhe home a success. ' lf we do nof 'rake our God-given place in fhe home our prayers will be hindered and our influence losf. Ofher subiecfs we sfudied were: Salvafion for our Souls, 'rhe Growing Chrisfian, fhe Church a Spirifual House, Esfablishmenf in 'rhe PresenffTru'rh, Danger of False Teachers, efc. . ' This sfudy has helped me on foward 'rhaf goal which Pefer sfafed in chapfer 5:IO. Buf fhe God of all grace, who hafh called us unfo his efernal glory by Chrisf Jesus, affer fhaf ye have suffered awhile make you perfecf, sfablish, sfrengfhen, seffle you. -James W. Burk-holder TYPES AND sHAnows Types and Shadows, faughf by Brofher Benjamin Eshbach, proved 'ro be a very infer- esfing and profifable sfudy. 'ln sfudying 'rhis subiecf, we saw 'rhaf fhe New is in fhe Qld concealed: fhe Old is by fhe New revealed. We learned fhaf a fype is some person or obiecf poinfing forward fo some greafer per- son or obiecf. An anfefype is fhe fulfillmenf of fhe fype. Therefore, a 'rype sfays in effecf unfil fhe anfefype comes info being. For example, fhe manna which fhe children of lsrael afe, was a fype of 'rhe anfefype, Chrisf, who is fhe Bread of Life. Anofher beaufiful illusfrafion of 'rhis is 'rhe ark, which was a place of safefy for Noah and his family. The ark is a fype of fhe Church, a place of safefy for fhose who are saved. There are many fypes in Old Tesfamenf characfers poinfing forward fo Chrisf. Here are 'rhree examples: lsaac was willing fo give himself as a sacrifice, even 'ro fhe poinl' of deafh. Jesus also was obedienf unfo deafh, even 'rhe deafh of fhe cross. Moses delivered Israel from fhe bondage of Egypf. Jesus -de- livers us from 'rhe bondage of sin. Joseph was sold info Egypf for fwenfy pieces of silver, Jesus was sold for fhirfy. , ' ln 'rhis class we were made 'ro realize wifh deeper appreciafion, 'rhe greaf work of God in unfolding His marvelous plan of salva- fion. -Mark Kropf, .ilil--1-11 PSALMS For fhe Lord is good: his mercy is ever- lasfing: and his frufh endurefh fo all-genera- fions. Psalm lOO:5. . ' W , c This class, faughf by Norman Reinford, was an inferesfing subiecf, and we found many rich frufhs fhroughouf fhese days. There are many differenf kinds of psalms. Some of fhem are. psalms of penifence, consecrafion, prayer. praise, worship, and many ofhers. , Psalm 96:4 says, The Lord is greaf, and greaflygfo be praised- There are many fhings for which we should praise God. One of fhe main fhings we should praise God for is sal- vafion. We also sfudiedsome psalms abouf The church. lf we love fhe church as we oughf, we will be able fo say wifh fhe Psalmisf, l was glad when fhey said unfo me, Lef us go info fhe house of fhe Lord. Psalm l22:I. 4 -Anna Reinford ,11, BIBLE SURVEY II The sfudy of' Bible Survey ll has drawn our affenfion fo fhe booksiof fhe Old Tesf- amenf from l Samuel fo Song of Solomon. The Bible is 'rhe fexfbook for Redempfion. Many glimpses of God and His plan for humanify can be seen 'rhrough fhe sfudy of fhese books of hisfory and poefry. We also discovered fhaf fhe church is a pracfical organizafion needing earfhly leaders. 23 I BIBLE SURVEY I Bible Survey I was a brief sfudy of fhe firsf eighf books of fhe Old Tesfamenf faughl. by Brofher Henry Weaver. We sfarfed in Genesis wifh fhe creafion and fall of man. From fhis poinf on fhe main fheme of fhe Bible is redempfion. We saw God's dealing wifh 'rhe Pafriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We fhen noficed fhe children of Israel as 'rhey enfered info Canaan. Finally, we sfudied abouf Rufh fhe Ivloabifish woman who was con- verfed fo fhe Jewish faifh in 'rhe laffer parf of 'rhe period of 'Ihe Judges. . The 'rifle of fhis required class is nof a Biblical word: buf nonre- sisfance is, however, a scripfurally-based dis- 'rincfive docfrine. Bro. God is revealing his love, mercy, and forgiveness fhrough New Tesfamenf nonresisfanf sainfs. However, God is nof nonresisfanf in His fofal nafure because He will efernall punish fhe disobedienf in fhe lake of fire. The Bible indicafes fhaf our presenf adversary was once-known as Lucifer, possibly fhe mosf glorious being of God's creafion. By his re- bellion againsf God, he incurred C5od's wrafh and now facesncerfain desfrucfion. ETERNAL ABSOLUTES The purpose of 'rhis sfudy was 'ro confirm fhe facf 'rhaf God's Word reveals a definife possible way of life fhaf we need fo follow fo receive efernal life. ln fhis sfud-y we looked af some of fhe unchangeable frufhs of C-5od's Word. such as God, Chrisf, Holy Spirif, man, angels, Safan, fhe Word, fhe kingdom of God, holiness, judg- menfs, and rewards. God is 'rhree persons in one, Fafher, Son and Holy Spirif, We looked af 'rhe work of each one as relafed fo each ofher and fo us. Two affribufes of God are omniscience - all powerful: f- and omipresence - everywhere presenf. Safan in confrasf does nof possess 'rhese affribufes. Because of pride he has fallen from his posifion in heaven. Man was creafed a fhree-fold being +o bring glory fo God 'rhrough fellowship wifh Him. Angels are minisfering spirifs which were creafed by God. lf is possible for angels fo fall, buf 'rhey cannof repenf. God is holy and fherefore he wanfs man 'ro be holy. The songwrifer has said of fhose who reiecf Chrisf, and oh, what a weeping and wailing, as 'rhe losf were fold of fheir fafeg fhey cried for 'rhe rocks and 'rhe mounfains: fhey prayed, buf fheir prayer was foo lafe. This everlasfing place of 'rormenf is characfer- ized by unquenchable fire, gnashing of feefh, and efernal oufer darkness. Confrasf fhis wifh fhe glories of heaven: fhe ioy of forever communing wifh Chrisf and ofher sainfs: being enveloped complefely by holiness, righfeousness, and spofless purify: singing and praising our Lord for evermore: and fullness of glory. We musf, however, meef 6od's 'rerms by receiving His giff and assum- ing personal responsibilify in our pilgrimage here. Then we can enjoy fhe endless glory and beaufy when we shall forever be wifh fhe Lord! -Almaria Zehr - APOSTASY Aposfasy can be defined as fhe abandon- menf of a precious loyaliy. lf began in heaven when iniquify was found in Lucifer. Soon affer fhe complefion of creafion. Safan fempfed Eve. She yielded, abandoning her loyalfy 'ro God. Aposfasy had begun on fhe human level. Many of our forefafhers gave fheir life- blood for fhe faifh of fhe Gospel, buf God confinued fo raise up ofhers such as Grebel, Manz, Saffler, and Menno Simons fo carry on His work.
