A I ■■ H ) 30 Science ent Dissecting? How sick! That ' s the reaction of most students to a typical laboratory science program. But not at Nueva Vista. Ms. Speaks expanded the science curriculum this year to include a variety of student participation and activities in advanced courses such as zoology and oceanography. It also offers hands-on ex- periences as well as experimental work. An important part of the coursework is dis- secting various animals. The students get an idea of what internal organs look like and how systems work, says Ms. Speaks. Gabriel Chavarria, an inspired zoology stu- dent, says, The class allows me to learn about the things I really love — life and animals. It ' s like a hobby rather than just a class. I always have fun in zoology. Science 1. ' Pathways to the Future a. i N32 Business ure 1. Forever improving her typing skills is Paula Calzia. 2. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing our true self. To place your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd is to risk loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk despair. To try at all is to risk failure. But to risk we must, because the greatest haz- ard in life is to risk nothing. The man, the woman, who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. Andy Lambright and Sean Hartman cross over to vic- tory as Joe Davis and partner follow close behind in the first heat of the 3-legged race. NAO Halloween Halloween Madness Strikes Who were those strange beings? They were the students and staff who were crazy enough to show up in costume for the annual Halloween Dress-Up Day. The three hours of madcap com- edy were highlighted by the pie-eating contest and the egg toss, neither of which were clean events. Susan Bachor, a walking jelly bean, won first prize in the costume contest. In other events, Jerry Oliver, Ron Phares, Joe Davis, Wes Rob- ertson, Mark Nickell, and Darrell Parks won the Coke Relay; John Minarcin and Mike Stevens hobbled their way to triumph in the 3-legged race; Roscoe Anaya slurped his chocolate pie in winning time; Ron Phares whistled first in the cracker whistle contest; and Victor Vasquez and Christina Lopez won the egg toss. Halloween s 41 It Only Hurts When We Laugh M At least that was the consensus of opinion of those students who viewed this year ' s drama class presentation. For a much-needed change, Ms. Gooden wanted to take a different ap- proach to teaching drama for 1983-84. She de- cided to have her students do funny skits and ugly jokes as the basis for a comedy-variety show. The main point of the whole program was to get the audience members to be able to laugh at themselves despite their faults and im- perfections. The show was a great success, and Ms. Goo- den feels that the students did an excellent job, especially since, for most of them, this was their first performance in front of a live audi- ence. Ann-Marie Escalante accepts some attention from one of the very special kids at Rose Kennedy School. Special Children Reach Out And Touch Someone In 1981 , the students and staff of Nueva Vista held the first annual Special Children ' s Fair. That got the ball rolling, as our students have since reached out to help handicapped children whenever the chance has arisen. This year, our very special volunteers refer- eed and supervised a volleyball tournament for special children at California School for the Deaf in Riverside. Another group helped con- duct the Halloween carnival at Rose Kennedy School. And Joe Davis, Kim Ihde, and Traycie Schindler dressed up as Santa and his elfettes and entertained the kids at Jurupa Jr. High. Later this year, Nueva Vista students will pro- vide their services at the Riverside Special Olympics. And finally, we will host the Special Children ' s Games in March. Thanks to the ef- forts of so many of our caring students, Nueva Vista has earned a very positive reputation throughout Riverside County. Special Children ' nW ' ' Spotlight On . . Volleyball . lJ x iT ' i V j v - ' iW ' A ) J A ' V ' Wait ' til Next Year That was the battlecry of this year ' s volley- ball squad after a very disappointing 0-6 sea- son. It wasn ' t for a lack of effort, as each player gave his all to avoid the unspeakable winless record. Coach Sanner, who kept the team ' s spirits high despite its lack of success, said we fought to win right to the end, but just couldn ' t pull it off. Sure, I was disappointed with no wins, but the most important thing is that everyone had a good time. Look out — next year ' s team is going to make a great comeback! 5. Size is not everything, especially to the Nueva Vista basketball team. Although shorter than every team in the league, the Aztecs used great quickness and team play to win the IECAL West- ern Division title. Then, led by the scoring of Ron Gauthier, Cedric Kelly, and Geoff Lang- ston, and the rebounding of Bobby Purcell, N.V. beat Ramsey H.S. 89-68 in the playoffs to ad- vance to the championship game. However, the dream of a league crown vanished as our heroes barely lost to Sierra H.S., 77-70. The regular season wasn ' t short on high- lights, either. Our team pulled off a great upset by sweeping 2 games from crosstown rival Lin- coln H.S. for the first time in the school ' s histo- ry. Our fine coach and great motivator, Jeff Ja- cobs, was very pleased with this year ' s team. Our kids played with heart and intensity, and showed their class through their sportsmanlike conduct all season long, commented the coach. 3. 4. Basketball ' NssT 7 ' A Repeat Performance? Not wanting to be outdone by their female counterparts last year, our men ' s softball team compiled a 10-1 record on their way to the I.E- .C.A.L. championship. When asked how he felt about this season, Coach Lou Cunningham re- plied, I feel we have an excellent chance of repeating our first place finish. I have a good group of guys who enjoy the game and have a desire to win. We ' re all out there to win because it ' s fun. But if we don ' t win, and still do our best, that ' s what counts. 1. After all, they only know how to win. With a 13-0 record that earned them a league champion- ship, last year ' s women ' s softball team was nothing less than awesome. This year ' s team, led by returning starters Patsy Rollins and Stephanie Martin, shows a great deal of poten- tial. According to Coach Jeff Jacobs, they could take another league title with a lot of hard work. Coach Jacobs puts his players through rigorous drills and exercises and, at the beginning of each practice, he exclaims, with a maniacal laugh, Nobody gets out of here alive!
