L. School Creed This I Shall Do- l, a student at Clifford H. Nowlin Junior High School, believe in the schools of the United States of America and the democratic principles for which they stand. I will do my best to cooperate with my teachers and fellow students to help and promote the spirit of my school, to use my time and energy wisely, to obey and help to enforce the rules and regulations of my school, to d-evelop my interests, ideals, habits, skills, and powers so that I may become a productive member of a free society. 'i X tl X Page 3 L tfjw ' Mx Dedication W w h N ' N ll in N In NowIin's short history, perhaps no one has proved his interest and concern tor the welfare of its students as has Mr. Dufter. His work with the Citizenship Club and the National Junior Honor Society and his willing- ness to take an active part in the many activities ot the school have truely been an asset during NowIin's formative years. And, it is with a great deal ot pleasure that the Annual Stott dedicates this book to Mr. Dutter. l 'S 1 V'-' M 3.,'u'.,..q-...g-v'-.,- ---., - , .W .3 ,, , W 1 ' ' af- Av: . - 15 -v 'Q '-4 'pwfw .1-ff' ,-'J - 'W F . ... Page 33 Keeping the student body up- to-date on school news and pro- viding a yearly record of events are two important jobs un- dertaken by Nowlin students throughout the year. The annual, The Black and Gold, provides a pictorial record of events for stu- dents, a tangible memory of work and play. The school paper, Panther Footprints, is published during the school year to keep Nowlin students informed and to provide interesting sidelights about the people and events which make up a complex junior high school. The students pic- tured on this page have volun- teered much of their time and ef- fort toward achieving these goals. Proofreadmg copy is an exacting task done by all members of the newspaper staff. Sfudenf Council The student council represents the heart of student government at Nowlin Junior High School. ln ad- diton to the officers shown on this page, the council is made up of a representative and an alternate from each homeroom. These offi- cers and representatives are elected each semester, and though any stu- dent can run for office, rigid quali- fications assure the student body that only the most qualified will be elected to office. This year, the student council has been under the sponsorship of Mrs. Kauzlarich, Mr. Casner, and Mr. Owens. While the primary task of the council is that of school govern- ment, it has undertaken many proj- ects to stimulate school spirit, such as sponsorship of buses to football and basketball games, and the sale of school color ribbons promoting attendance at the games. The students who have worked on the council are to be commended for their untiring and unselfish Mr. Norris helps collect bus tickets for the Northeast game. work toward the betterment of the school. Classroom activities in speech range from panto- mimes, speech making, parlia- mentary procedure, debate, oral interpretation, to dra- matics. All these activities are sup- plemented by the very active speech club, the Orators, who presented the Christmas as- sembly again this year and also produced Ramblin' Rose or My Aunt, the Nut . But, it is also a good deal of hard work. Stud-ents in junior high schools such as Nowlin begin learning the basic fundamentals of a language, generally in preparation for further study in high school and college. These pictures show Nowlin stu- dents at work in the language lab studying Spanish and Russian. You're coming in loud and clear. Mr. Monwarren uses o bilingual chart to show the intracacies of Russian to a group of students. Page 39 Art -M, ff Fm' iii Nt in Page 40 A suggestion The potter's wheel Lettering ,.., . Study in concentration The orchestra prepares for a concert Music Music plays an important role in school life at Nowlin. When a final touch is needed for an assembly or a P-TA program, the vocal and instrumental groups are always ready to make such programs even more interesting. The music classes serve a twofold purpose--they provide students with the mechanics of good vocal and instrumental training and also provide the important aesthetic appreciation of good music. Nowlin can well be proud of its outstanding music department! The Big beat 'A' Band rehearsal Y Page 41 Homemaking Home management: The key to a good home! Cooking . . . indoors . . . and on the patio! ln today's complex society, homemaking in- cludes much more than just the skills of sewing and cooking. Nowlin's future homemakers soon find they must possess a working knowledge of many tasks to fit harmoniously into home, school, and community. Special emphasis is given to topics which are important to the family in today's world: consumer buying, safety, decorating, housekeep- ing, home care of the sick, and suggestions for family fun and entertainment. Ninth grade general science in- troduces the student to different sciences with emphasis on the phys- ical sciences and the important relation of mathematics to science. Biology gives the student one unit of a laboratory science and is the study of zoology and botany. Zoo- logy includes the study of animals and physiolgy, while botany is the study of plants. Page 43 Industrial Arts Drafting Nancy Copeland enjoys the unique honor of being the only girl in on industrial arts course. The Industrial Arts program at Nowlin is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of metalwork, elec- tricity, woodwork, drafting, and printing. ln its initial year of operation, the print shop has under- taken such tasks as preparing some of the printed forms for the office, the tickets and programs for the spring play, and the tickets for the talent show. The activities shown on these pages are representative of just some of the operations performed in the shops.
