K 'P n I . Q ,, mu --Maxxum awv S This year the IRONMEN 'STAFF have chosen for the theme of the '78 IRONMAN lt Was Almost Like ' A Song. We feel music is an important part of NHS. If you stop and think for just a moment practi- cally everyone who comes in the front door in the morning or after lunch keeps a song' on his or her lips. Disco became the rage, while hard rock faded away. The Beatles broke up, while the Beach Boys got back together. 1 V a I is l ' Wi ' 1 A -9 Q41 l li , 6 ,Z :fb XA X, 1 Til f f ' ,wg-af nfl Qi 'H - ,-42211 ' ' l,figJw2'1rl.i W, Y 3 A A 1 w ' Q I 9? ab 5' ' 4 i i il 1.3, ,iq i Q fi -fi. fi it :. 1. l c i 3 in M wal , fig A 'V , KKAGL V .EW is ir 4 IF ' .5 it - r i 5 V 5 'V f T A E iaaiiul V lit ., 4 azz: l V , V Y Ei KW i e cce y M: ei s :L ,,,,. g, , 4- ,l., QT in mill. Seniors and Faculty alike were particularly pleased with the talent and enthusiasm presented at the reception. The Prom, itself, was a great success, as the band, FANTASY, played many of our favorite tunes. As the night wore on, jackets, ties, and high heels were shed as couples danced to disco and then settled down to sentimental dream songs. The Seniors will always remember it as their prom, the Juniors will remember it as a fun-filled hassle, but everyone will keep it in their fondest memories. REBUlLDl REBUILDV' This is the key phrase to be used in the future IRONNIAN motto. We need to rebuild, not only in strength and size, but in attitude, self confi- dence, and self pride. During this past sea- son, the IRONNIAN carried the wrong attitude. We, as coaches, can work to improve the strength and size of our play- ers, but the major responsibility lies within the individual. lt is the player who must recognize and improve his confie dence and pride, not only in himself, but in his team as well. When this goal is reached through hard work and determina- tion, the lFlONlVlAN will stand as one. ASST. COACHES: Hudson, Smith, Roe, Lamberson. KNEELING: HEAD COACH: Jim Steele. In l xp-5 Improving as the season progressed, the lronmen fashioned a record of 14 wins and 11 losses, despite a .e pre-season prediction for a mediocre season. Six of the eleven were by two points or less. The Ironmen lost three of those six games as the ball went through at the buzzer. Seven of those eleven losses were to Pawhuska, rated W6 in 2AAg Vinita, rated 4r5 in 2AA5 Cleveland, rated W2 in 2AA. The Ironmen were NIT runners-up and won the NEO Tournament. During the month of January, the Ironmen were building for the play-offs, as they won seven out of ten games. The Ironmen gave a great effort in the District Tournament, as they came from nine points behind with just three minutes left on the clock to defeat a fine Commerce team. The Ironmen lost by two points to the Vinita Hornets in the District finals, but showed a lot of poise and determination. The Ironmen were defeated in the second round of the Regional Tournament by the W2 rated Cleveland Tigers, by two points on a last second shot. This was a most gratifying season, as these young men accomplished several goals that were not expected of them. They were the best group of shooters, l've coached, with pride and determination, and the startersback, the Ironmen are looking forward to next year. They are: Verdigris Valley All-Conference, Northeast District Coaches All-Star, Coffeyville Journal Player of the Week, Tulsa World Honorable Mention-Player of the Week, All Area First Team in the Coffeyville Journal, and Honorable Mention All- State. One ofthe most popular members of the Class of 1978, this year's Big E winner is a personable young man whose quiet ways are easily matched by his ready smile. A new high of I6 victories was achieved. We only lost 9 times. The Girls successfully defended their NIT crown. This group also capped the season by winning the District Championship, the first ever for the Girls of Nowata in their short, 4- year history. In addition, Senior forwards, Donna Nlay and Dianna Hallett, were selected as Co- Players of the Year in the Verdigris Valley Conference. These young ladies, along with their parents, fellow students, faculty, administration, and community can be proud of their achievements. It takes involvement from all their areas to make any program successful. I want to publicly express my appreciation to everyone involved, D but especially to my players and Coach Long. , Their efforts, sacrifice, and dedication speaks for itself. Annual Staffp Keeping Memories Many people asked us if the 1978 IRONMAN was going to be different and better this year. We leave the answer up to you. The staff, this year, has worked and tried to capture all the moments that make high school a beautiful memory. We think of this annual as a cre- ation that brings back all the memories that made your years at NHS so unique. The making of this yearbook has become an important part of our lives these past months. And we find that bringing it to a close is much more difficult than beginning it. But as another year goes by, we know that another phase of our life has also passed. We wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to our Advisor, Vera Yirsa. Without her guidance and patience, this yearbook could have never been finished. lt was her sense of humor and encouragement that made us plunge forward with the impossible pages. We hope this edition of the 1978 IRONMAN will be memorable to you as it is to us. We also hope that as you climb through the years to reach the top, that you will look back at this book, the people, the places, and the times, and that it will hold memories that warm your heart, bring soft smiles to your lips and maybe even a tear to your eye. And we hope that as you close it, it will give you a renewed energy to face the world and make more beautiful memories. TAMI OLER Editor vi Students of the Month 1.
