ANNUAL STAFF Editor : Mary Pat Myers Advertising Manager: Mary McClymonds Business Manager: Jo Harrison Photography Editor: Debbie Rider Photographers: Roy Conner Rhonda Samples Advisor : Charlotte Kincaide Janice Howard Jo Buck Debby Stookey Dianna McElhany Dana Noe Karen Boultinghouse Lonetta Kincaide Janice Yirsa Liz Powell The 1970 Ironman staff has looked through the doors of NHS. This is what we've seen: We've seen teachers who felt it was important to know about the past, present, and future, because they believe it to be so. We've seen young, eager faces trying to find out what education is all about and what they want to do with their lives. We've seen girls forgetting everything but their dates for the Prom and we've seen boys acting their best in their formal coats. We've seen football and basketball games, where sometimes We came home happy and sometimes sad. We've liked what we've seen, so we, the Ironman staff, invite you to look through the doors of NHS, too. We think you'll like what you see. fn Paz The Sooner Schooner 'Wm and pony team: Courtesy of Alvis Johnson --an if 1 , ,fi W. i H 'T'f2 T, QT ,m? im'1iwZ'i, 44-uf, 'W-f,?GEiv.,i2?A K wif Bi fi--asf V K.-N -.,' X DS. fxwslfn w'm'W'aw 1nWx ',z - 535 i if 2 :gy is wx :,k. With your enthusiasm, your spirit, and your energy, I am sure you will accomplish your goals in life. The Ironman annual is evidence that 1969-70 has been a good year-full of activities and achieve- ments. The annual provides us with a picture record of most of these activities, and I hope it will al- ways be a reminder of one of the best years of your life. As the years roll by and as you thumb through this book, I am sure you will recall many fond memories. On these occasions, may you also remember the wishes and hopes of the teachers who motivated and urged you to reach for higher goals. We who remain salute and congratulate the seniors and wish them well. Jerome J. Zumwalt Jerome J. Zumwalt, High School Principal Chester Price Junior High School Principal H. MOORE KATIE LYNCH, Business Manager SUPERINTENDENT and A small step for man, a giant leap for man- kind, the Words of astronaut Neil Armstrong beamed to Earth in this year of the moon Walk, graphically illustrate what dedication to a pur- pose can achieve in today's World. This great and historic event makes us aware of the potential of man to solve problems when resources are focused on a real goal. This book, the 1970 IRONMAN, reflects the goals and their degree of realization for or- ganizations, teams, groups and individuals dur- ing this school year. To those who have been successful in achiev- ing 'their goals, I extend my congratulations. Those who have fallen short, I admonish to identify new aspirations and goals which will challenge their personal qualities, talents, and abilities. They also can make a giant leap for themselves and mankind, with dedication of purpose as their resolve. I THIRD ANNUAL BIG E AWARDED Before a hushed and expectant throng of faithful NHS basketball fans, at half-time of the last regu- larly scheduled home game, Feb- ruary 1O. 1970, Coach Ken Zacher made the presentation of this cov- eted award. Coach Zacher would have preferred to follow the prece- dent set last year by having Kerry Caliman, winner of the 1969 Big E, present for the ceremony: however, Midn. KerrY could not be absent from his duties at the U.S. Naval Academy The Ironmen basketball Big E is awarded annually at the last home game to the senior who has been chosen by his teammates for the honor on the basis of his effort, determination, team coop- eration, and desire to win. He is not necessarily the most valuable player, the team members select the senior who they feel puts forth the greatest effort with the abil- ity he possesses In addition to receiving a beautiful trophy, the winner has his name engraved upon a permanent plaque in the NHS trophy case .. . One of the most popular mem- bers of the Class of 1970, this year's Big E winner is a per- sonable young man whose sparkling good humor is easily matched by his ready smile And some of his fans who approved most heart- ily of his selection for the award were no doubt reminded of this young man's determination to play basketball during his junior high years despite the fact that he wore long-leg casts on both legs for several months as treatment for the ravages of Osgood-Schlatter's disease upon his knees they re- call with wonder the times he came off the bench to fuel a rally with baskets scored from near half- court this necessitated by his not being able to move up and down the floor as rapidly las the other players because of the cum- bersome casts this same love for and dedication to the game have carried him through many exciting high school games fand, at this writing, into the area tournament the last step to the state tournamentlj So, it is with pride and ad- miration that NHS salutes: 90 . .
