The shields appearing in each of the five points of the star represent the symbols of the Cherokee Nation, the Chickasaw Nation, the Choctaw Nation, the Seminole Nation and the Creek Nation. Surrounding the central star are forty-five small stars, representing the forty-five states that comprised the Union at the time the seal was adopted in 1907.
