The shields appearing in each of the five points of the star represent the symbols of the Cherokee Nation, the Chickasaw Nation, the Choctaw Nation, the Seminole Nation and the Creek Nation. Surrounding the central star are forty-five small stars, representing the forty-five states that comprised the Union at the time the seal was adopted in 1907. Across the face of the shield runs the red man's Calumet, or pipe of peace, crossed with the whiteman's peace symbol, the olive branch, The field of the flag is the blue of Oklahoma skies, the shield is light tan, with white feathers, tipped with brown, the small crosses are tan, slightly darker than that of the shield, and the Calumet has a red bowl, and pale yellow ivory stem with a red feather tassel attached. The olive branch is gray green, and the word Oklahoma is pure white. The design of the State Flag is symbolic. The blue field signifies loyalty and devotion. The shield implies defensive or protective warfare. The small tan crosses are the lndian's graphic sign for stars, and indicate lofty ideals or a purpose for high endeavor. The important symbols however, are the Calumet and the olive branch. These override the shield, the symbol of war, and bespeak a predominant love of peace by a united people, O Uffcbvw SANDY MONTGOMERY president MIKE WATSON vice president GARY SMITH secretary and treasurer 746 Smze 7649 tty ....w,.A,,,i,X,wM M '4V6in.gy4M .. .QQN y . Oklahoma was the first state to adopt a State Flower. The Legislature in 1893, 14 years before the territory was taken into the Union, designated the Mistletoe as the floral symbol. Soon after, many other states followed 0klahoma's lead in designating state flowers. Land of the Mistletoe, smiling in splendor Out of the borderland, mystic and old. The Redbud grows in profusion among Oklahoma's fields, hillsides and valleys. The brilliant red-pink blossoms are a riot of color in the Spring and serve to attract hundreds of out-of-state visitors. to an annual pilgrimage during blooming time each year. The beauty of Oklahoma's Redbud in bloom has been compared favorably with the Cherry Blossoms of Washington and the Apple Blossoms of the Shenandoah Valley.
