Life may be like a rock, but when you are at Nottoway it is more like modeling clay. In August it can be molded into something new each day, an athlete, a musician, a sophomore, a junior or a senior. One never knows what form the day will take, but more than likely each Monday morning at 8:00 the school halls are packed with about 600 students talking about a Friday night Cougar football game or pushing their way to homeroom. Wednesdays are always looked forward to because the first three classes will be cut short for the meeting of clubs or some assembly program or a special guest speaker. After all the entertainment comes the joy of lunch—the social part of the day. As one enters the cafeteria, he will hear the buzzing of students voices and may even see some green peas or peaches flying around. Thursday moves along peacefully until 1:15 when the band starts warming up. The sound of horns, trum- pets, and drums can be heard for quite some distance. Fridays are the highlight of the week. The whole school is excited and waiting impatiently for the afternoon pep rally and the sports event that wi ll take place that night. By the time June arrives the day is molded into a definite shape and begins to dry. Sophomores do not keep their shape and will continue to change for two more years. Juniors are almost through being sculptured; they have but one more year. The Seniors are now solid and their life may very well be just like a rock. BUILDING FOR This diligent English class works toward building the future despite hard tests. THE FUTURE | ae My) py Who would believe this was our auditorium?? That used to be our driving range!!!!??7?? Homecoming week of 1979 was exciting as ever with everyone participating. All through the week beginning Monday morning all three classes decorated the halls. The halls were really special this year with the Sophomores overdecorating the Juniors and Seniors. Starting out the exciting week was ‘'slop” day with everyone in their oldest clothes. Wednesday was just as exhilarating with all the ''greasers’’ sliding about in t-shirts and poodle skirts. Thursday was official '‘mascarade” day. There were brilliant costumes with a lot of ‘‘Dollys’”’ running or shall we say ‘‘bouncing” around. As these activities went on the classes worked hard on their floats with plenty of enthusiasm with the Juniors coming out ahead. Tuesday came around with class color day. Everyone had scraped up some kind of outfit with their class color in it. As Friday finally approached everyone was ready to let their maroon and gold colors and spirit show at the hour pep rally. There were skits by the classes and cheerleaders, dance routines by the cheerleaders, a musical number by the band, spirit chain, and the spirit stick. All classes showed participation and enthusiasm. The Seniors won the skit, spirit chain, and spirit stick. Juniors came out with first place in the float and, of course, those Sophomores came out with the best hall. Friday after school the traditional parades were given with spirited cheerleaders, gliding floats, beautiful princesses, marching bands, and Charlie Cougar’. That night everyone was waiting for the exciting game with Bluestone. As the game had begun everyone awaited half-time activities with the princesses and the band. Sandra Jefferson was our 1979 queen with Deborah Procise as lst runner-up and Page Rainey as 2nd runner-up. As the game ended the high spirit of the Cougar fans was cut low with a loss of 30-18 to Bluestone. But all was forgotten at the Homecoming dance with the theme being ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now”. This ended one of many great homecoming weeks at NSH. This for sure will be in the records of Nottoway Senior High! The team consisted of youth and inexperience that caused a long season. The young Cougars suffered through a 5-16 season but suffered to gain valuable experience which will hopefully enable Nottoway to have very good teams for the next two years. The bright spot in the season for Nottoway was winning the first three games. This was due partly to some real good pre-season practices. The low point in the season was when three players had to be dropped from the team because of failing grades. The Cougars were four and six before this and only one and ten afterwards. Leading scorer, Reidy In- gram, and leading rebounder, Linwood Dagner, were selected to the All-District Honorable Mention Team at the season’s end. The future looks brighter as nine players with varsity experience are eligible to return next year. Also, a couple of ‘'B’”’ team players possess much potential. The early part of the season presented many problems to the inexperienced Cougars but they were able to pull themselves together near the end of the season and give the district foes some stiff competition. The 1980 Nottoway Senior High Golf Team had a very suc- cessful season, finishing the regular season with a 13-3 win-loss record. The Cougars then proceeded to a disappointing third- place finish in the District Championship, but Brian Cary, Jim Hudgins, and Jon Hicks qualified as Individuals for the Region | Tournament In Suffolk. Brian Cary then quallfled for the Virginia State Group AA Championships in Amherst, where he finished fifth as an individual. 26 Running is our bag The Nottoway Senior girl’s track team, after being second in the Southside District for the past two years, slipped to fifth place this year. The Nottoway girls won three of seven track meets and got a second and three third place finishes in four team meets. Karen Keeton, last year’s MVP, led a young 1980 team with 85 points. Keeton was one of the top district performers in the 100, 220, long jump all year. Two sophomores, Karen Hurt (78 pts.) and Sharon Rowe (49 pts.), also were top performers in the Southside District. Hurt qualified for the regionals in the shot put, and discus while Rowe qualified in the 110 yd. low hurdles. Both these ladies were also important members of relay teams during the year. Julie Stamper (880), Crystal Cliborne (Mile), Patricia Rather (2 mile), Cheryl Pollard (hurdles), Wandsa Johnson (shot put), Jackie Stables (Discus), and Renauta Jesters (440) made Not- toway very competitive for the third straight year. Penny Verser adds to the Cougarette cause! The Nottoway Cougarettes, an up and coming team, took a fourth place tie for the 1980 softball season. A winning record of 11 and 7 was good enough to tie with Matoaca and only leave three teams above them. L.C. Bird and Bluestone seemed to be the only competition for the girls’, losing both games to the third place Monancan by only one run. Next year the young Cougarettes will be even more competitive for the newly formed district losing only three seniors; the pitching and catching team Debbie Procise and Laurie Limoge and outfielder Ellen Clary. Technologies Are Being Developed. Energy conservation does not mean austerity or a lower standard of living. But it does mean some consumer and industry consumption patterns must be altered. Without conservation as part of a comprehensive national energy policy, energy shortages could severly restrict the opportunities and advantages we now enjoy, and limit our ability to pursue our traditional hopes and dreams for a better life.
