WE HAVE DONE OUR UTMOST TO MAKE THIS VOLUME A TRUE MIRROR OF THE SCHOOL'S ACTIVITIES DURING THE PAST YEAR. IF THIS ATTEMPT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL, IT IS DUE MAINLY TO THE CO-OPERATION RECEIVED FROM CLASSMATES AND THOSE WITH WHOM BUSINESS WAS CONDUCTED. IN MAKING THE REFLECTOR, WE HAVE DONE OUR BEST, AND WE SINCERELY HOPE THAT OUR EFFORTS PLEASE. ..-1 IN C-BRATEFUL APPRECIATION OF THEIR TIRE- LESS EFFORTS IN OUR BEHALF, THE CLASS OF NINETEEN THIRTY DEDICATES THIS BOOK TO THE FACULTY Zin illflemuriam 37959 John P. Jacks Willard Harf THE REFLECTOR 'Mu 'ef' LOOKING FORWARD 'T When we were in grammar school noT long ago, We looked aT The high school wiTh awe. Our greaT aspiraTions had Their apex There, And iT was crowned wiTh a golden halo. IT is queer, is iT noT, in Tour shorT years, I-low our dreams will change and grow? For now iT is college ThaT has us enThraIIed, Or, Tor some, grand and noble careers. For our high school days have come To a close. BuT our sadness is lined wiTh joy, For The friendships formed are Too sTaunch and True For This parTing ever To cloy. And The memories of The lessons learned. No maTTer how useless They seemed. Will show us Their value laTer on. And our success will be honesTly earned. IT I were only a propheT, In The TuTure I Think I migh+ see Ambassadors. Teachers, and scholars of life, Or a, second greaT Disraeli. I see TaThers and moThers and beauTifuI homes Where love and sympaThy reign, Joy ThaT no kingdom could rival, And a noble endurance of pain. So from childhood Thru high school Thus 'Far we've come, Each sTaTe wiTh iTs sorrows and ioy. Each wiTh iTs new expecTaTions ThaT noThing can ever desTroy. TH E RE FLECT O R 1? S E FAC ULTY TH th Cl. The sole ouT-oT-Town Trip underTalcen by The Team was To The Tamous Union-EndicoTT MeeT. Here, alThough The cream oT scholasTic Traclc- men oT The sTaTe clashed, NoTTingham won second place in class B compeTiTion. ln The annual CiTy high school meeT, The Orange carried away second place once more in The Tace OT hard opposiTion. A loss in a dual iousT wiTh Cazenovia Seminary and a vicTory over NorTh High in a Twofold Tussle served To Tinish The season. A heavy loss of veTerans hampers The Team much This year. Among Those reTurning are Ralph Brown, Edward Cady, and William Thompson who will have To malce up Tor The loss OT such men as Eddie KanTrowiTz, lrving Earle, Dick Groves, Louis deAngela, and oThers. ln The weigh division NoTTingham loolcs incapable oT producing anoTher Don TurcoT or l-larry Yalcey. However, wiTh The experT advice oT Mr. Manor, presenT gym insTrucTor, success may easily Tollow NoTTing- ham in I93O. 84 THE REFLECTOR l GIRLS' BASKETBALL, I929-30 The girls' basl4eTball Team represenTing The Orange and Blue Tor This season is a splendid example oT NoTTingham's abiliTy To place well- Trained, TasT Teams on The Tloor. The girls played good, heady games and have been complimenTed by many coaches in The ciTy. Every girl lcnew her posiTion Thoroughly and played iT To The besT oT her abiIi+y. BeTTy Faulkner, small, TasT and usually a dead shoT aT The wire dislc, is a naTural born Torward. T-lfer Team maTe, Jane Spencer, who was oTTen piTTed againsT The TallesT guard oT The opposing Team, deserves much crediT. Barbara Blanchard and Mary Dunlap may easily be called The long and shorT oT iT. Very Tew cenTers could ouT-iump Barbara and no one could ouTplay Mary. LasT, buT noT leasT, come The guards. They were regarded as The mainsTays on The Team and boTh have played on The All-STar ciTy Teams ThaT are selecTed aT The close oT each baslceTball season. WiThouT Mariorie Vesey and Edi+h Laurie, The Team would have lacked much oT iTs power. No Team can be successTul wiThouT proper coaching, and one reason NoTTingham placed second in The CiTy League was because oT Miss Johnson's Tireless eTTorTs ThroughouT The season. Much crediT is due The subsTiTuTes who aided. They were DoroThy Vesey, Dor- oThy WhiTney, Mildred Ache-son, Sylvia WolT, Ann Turner and Thelma Fancher. The coach, Miss Johnson, deserves much crediT Tor her hard work in geTTing The Team in shape as does Mildred Acheson, sTudenT manager. The Team, on accounT oT good supporT on iTs home courT, won every game played aT NoTTingham. Valley also was vicTorious buT was Torced To TorTeiT iTs game To The NoTTing- ham girls because oT an ineligibiliTy in The Valley line-up. The mermaids did noT need much Time To show Their superioriTy over Their opponenTs, Tor They soon rolled up a score OT 36 poinTs To The 7 secured by Their closesT rival, CenTral l-ligh. DoroThy WhiTney did her share by coming in TirsT in The 80 yard dash and also second in The baclcsTrolce. Elaine Wilson won The 40 yard dash as well as second place in The diving, wiTh her sisTer BeirTha coming in TirsT in The laTTer evenT.
