 Team Gains Experience Although the basketball team did not have a win- ning season, their spirit was not hampered. The team suffered from inexperience. It included only one senior, three juniors, and three sophomores; the rest were freshmen. Everyone on the team had the guts and determi- nation to keep on trying, even after many losses. “I'd like to salute these girls for the tremendous ef- fort they put forth,” commented Lisa Brooks. For in- experienced players, the freshmen did really well. Playing against upperclassmen from other schools was a tough job, but the class of ’85 gave one hun- dred percent and helped boost the morale of the team. Given time, this team will be a powerful one, especially since more than half will be returning next year. Squad Battles Showers Although they were deterred by poor weather and occasional losses, the softball team of '82 kept their spirits high with the help of former Kansas City Royals player Pete LaCock. Invited by Coach Dennis Conaghan, Pete LaCock instructed the girls on strategy and improving their style of play. Another boost came when the team placed third in the Spring Hill tourna- ment. Practices took a heavy toll on the players, who suf- fered skinned knees, skinned elbows, and bruises as the coaches had them practice their slides. The injuries were not as numerous, however, as they would have been had most of the practices not been called off on account of rain. Consisting of nine freshmen, four sophomores, one junior, and five seniors, the softball team had unity despite the mixture of classes. The team worked well together and cooperated with the coaches to achieve three wins. Even though they will be losing five seniors next year, the Sion softball team will survive because of its spirit, drive, and youth.
