Team Gains Experience Although the basketball team did not have a win- ning season, their spirit was not hampered. The team suffered from inexperience. It included only one senior, three juniors, and three sophomores; the rest were freshmen. Everyone on the team had the guts and determi- nation to keep on trying, even after many losses. “I'd like to salute these girls for the tremendous ef- fort they put forth,” commented Lisa Brooks. For in- experienced players, the freshmen did really well. Playing against upperclassmen from other schools was a tough job, but the class of ’85 gave one hun- dred percent and helped boost the morale of the team. Given time, this team will be a powerful one, especially since more than half will be returning next year. c New Team Joins Ranks The most prominent changes in Sion sports this year have been the arrival of a new volleyball and track- coach, Miss Beverly Powell, and the addition of a Freshman Volleyball Team. The Varsity Team adjusted quickly to the new direction by winning eight of their last nine matches after starting off with two losses. Senior leaders Andrea Eddy, jane Vader, and Jean Kostusik sparked the team with their skills in power volleyball. The well-balanced Junior Varsity Team, composed primarily of sophomores, served and spiked their way to a nine and three record. In six of their victories they silenced their opponents in two straight games. The newly-formed freshman squad also was led by a new coach, Mrs. Kathy Houlton. Forty girls who had previous experience came out,” remarked Coach Houlton, “so there was the basis of a good team.” After overcoming the initial obstacle of becoming ac- customed to high school volleyball strategy, the hard- working team earned a 3-3 record. It took us a while to learn to trust each other and to learn to play as a team,” commented Ann Novosel . The volleyball season closed with the Barstow Tour- nament, in which the squad placed third, and a tough loss in district competition to the team from Oak Grove.
