Team Drives to State Sion golfers had a victorious year, with five wins and two losses in the regular season. They followed these triumphs by taking second place in both the Dis- trict and the Plattsburg tournaments. Placing in Dis- tricts qualified four girls for entry in the state playoffs in Columbia, Missouri. Accompanied by new coach, Kay Miller, team leaders Ann Kryger, Susan Finlen, Vickie Huerter, and Susie Huerter spent two exhaust- ing days playing matches in the Missouri mud. In spite of the poor weather conditions, they emerged with a ranking of ninth place for the state. Upon their return from the State Tournament, Susie Huerter reported, It was a great feeling that, after all the hard weeks of practice we put in, we were re- warded by going to State.” Susan Finlen added, “We got to meet a lot of neat people from other districts by going to Columbia.” All the team members and alternate Kelly Karr spoke enthusiastically of the support and guidance of Kay Miller, their coach. Her many hours spent in making arrangements for meets and transportation made it possible for the golfers to concentrate on im- proving their games. In planning for next year, Miss Miller plans to recruit both present and incoming stu- dents, for three of the current players will graduate. Girls with golf experience and enthusiasm for the game will be needed to fill the spots left vacant by the steady seniors of this past season. 46 Go If

V Aces Tennis Season When thirty-five eager candidates showed up for ini- tial tryouts, it was obvious that choosing a varsity and junior varsity tennis squad was not going to be an easy task for Coach Jim Schmidt. Finally the list came out, and the returning veterans welcomed freshmen: Althea Abaqueta, Jennifer Fields, and Barbara Courville to the Junior Varsity Team. These players went on to help bring the Junior Varsity to a fantastic finish with an undefeated record of seven wins and no losses. Particularly satisfying were victories over arch-rivals, St. Teresa’s and Sunset. The Varsity welcomed back most of the 1980-81 team, including sophomores Mary Jeanne Solomon and Fran Crowe, who led the Varsity on to a final record of four wins and four defeats. “I was really happy with the way the season went,” stated Coach Schmidt. “The seniors did a super job. The members of the tennis team were very united. They encouraged one another, helped one another, and cooperated with one another to bring the team in to a successful season.
