Beside the inevitability of correcting papers, most teachers were also involved in extra-curricular activi- ties. In addition to the more visible roles as sponsors and coaches, instructors such as Angela Fasci and Alice Munninghoff work even during the summer to plan sched- ules and policies in conjunction with the principals. A friendly face which seems to appear on campus eigh- teen to twenty hours a day is Ernie Berube, supervisor of the building and dispenser of fast food at lunchtime. He also chauffeurs baseball fans like Sister Sara Lou to Royals Stadium. Sion teachers also become involved in some rather un- usual activities such as singing corny songs for students on Camie Day and even misspelling notes to disguise their identities during Kris Kringle time. In their precious off-campus moments they pursue such avocations as producing art shows, selling real estate, teaching at local colleges, and making toys. 16 Academics

English, Latin F i Ei New Faces Bring Light Change affected the Sion faculty in a big way in ’82, as one third of the teachers were new to the school. Es- pecially noticeable were several new male teachers in a faculty which has always been dominated by women. These new teachers jumped right into the sponsorship of classes, clubs, and activities. Pat Amick, a math teacher from Rockhurst, supervised Carnival ticket sales and helped sponsor the Junior Class. New art instructor Richard Bay directed graphic displays for Carnival and set design for the fall production, while Counselor Kay Miller took on the golf team. Other new instructors involved in sports were volleyball coaches Bev Powell and Kathy Houlton. Pub- lications were also directed by recent additions to the faculty. Cara LaForge of the French Department led the newspaper staffers, while Joan Speidel sponsored the yearbook, Quill and Scroll, and a newly-formed Latin Club. As Mary Duerst of the Business Department re- marked. “Having new faculty brings about a terrific mix.” 18 Academics B
