JVUh, On Sunday, November 4th, alumnae, stu- dents, and friends assembled in tile Grande Salle for the presentation ceremony of the Cross of the French Legion of Honour to Mere Marie Iiene de Sion, known fondly to her students and friends as “Notre Mere”. In the name of President Vincent Auriol of France, Francois Briere, the French consul gen- eral from Chicago, presented the award to Wire Mere in recognition for the many years she has spent bringing French culture to the different parts of the world in which she has lived and lately for her generosity in helping the post war needy in France. Jo Zack Miller III, master of ceremonies, presented the speakers: M. Briere, Bishop Edwin V. O'Hara, Mayor William E. Kemp, and Msgr. L. Curtis Tiernam. IK e member Other guests were Mr. Humphrey Cotton-Min- chin, the British Consul, Mrs. Cotton-Minchin, the Belgium Consul, Senator and Mrs. James P. Kent, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Eisenhower, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Greenlease, who afterwards entertained for M. Briere at the River Club. Notre Mere received the medal as the hall rung with applause. A surprise to some, who know Notre Mere only as a strong and courag- eous woman, was her evident emotion, w hen she responded to the cheering crowd and to M. Briere, “I may not have money, but I have a heart and I have prayers and I love you”. She then listened while two songs, equally beloved by her. were played: the Star Spangled Banner and the Marseillaise. Page 8
