Lucille Leclerc '59 lfront Row: G. SCIENCE FAIR IfI,INT, MICHIGAN MAY I 0 5 8 . Y agar' I l O fl2emLnLJgeLng p Now that commencement is near, I reminisce about the four years which have gone by so quickly. I remember the moments of challenge, work, and reward-especially those spent on my projects, projects that brought me to two National Science Fairs. 1 I recall that moment when Maurice Renaud and I boarded an American Airlines Mercury Flagship for a nonstop flight from Idlewild to Los Angeles. Mr. W. A. Crandall, North Country :Science Fair chairman, accompanied us. We, along with 231 other finalists, et up ourxexhibits at the Los Angeles County Museum: and while judges weristtyiying our work, we toured Los An- geles. Among many others, we visited'LICLA, Caltech, CBS Television Studios. Disney Studios, Marineland, and a fanious night club, the Moulin Rouge. I was pleased and honored to receive a Sglecial Citation from the Science Society of Thailand for my entry, Direct a dfor Indirect Effect of Antibiotics on Endamoeba Histolytican, at the 8th Annual National Science Fair. Even more vivid in my memory is that moment when I went on stage to receive the 3rd prize in Biology at the 9'niyAnnual National Science Fair in Flint, Michigan. I was, indeed, proud to receive this honor, considering the stiff competition with 281 other finalists. Maurice and I, accompanied by Mr. Crandall, made our trip to Michigan by automobile. On the way we dined at the Sheraton-Brock Hotel, overlooking the brilliantly colored Niagara Falls. We arrived in Flint on the next day and set up our exhibits at the Flint Junior College. As in Los Angeles, police-escorted tours were provided. We visited the University of Michigan where we saw a human dissection at the medical school, a one-million volt reactor at the graduate school, and much more. Other tours included GMI, Chevrolet Assembly Line, Fisher Body Plant, etc. The trips and the winning of prizes are certainly rewarding: but the feeling of accomplishment is much more so. In conclusion, I wish to thank my sponsors, and Mr. W. A. Crandall for the fine work that is being done by the North Country Science Fair. A special thanks and note of appreciation is in order for Sister Ste. Marie-Rosine whose unconditional help and guidance made my project possible. , Leo Morin ' 59 Qoon NEWS! The North Country Science Fair wasf held in Lancaster, April 2 and 3. Leo again won First Best of Fair , and First Prize in Biology. He will go to the 10th Annual National Science Fair, which will be held at Hartford, Connecticut. Congratulations Leo, you are, indeed, the honor and glory of Notre Dame. Poetry Association OCTOBER October is the month of leaves red and brown, Like a maiden so fair in a gay party gown. It's the Halloween season, when witches come riding, And ghost and goblins come out of their hiding. All little people go trick or treat: They have many friends they want to greet. For October gay is the month of fun, The end of Summer, when harvest is done. SONG OF THE LEAVES It's time to change from green to gold, As if we were old and bold, Sorry we have to leave today, But we can't stay: we're on our way. The frost is all around us, Bright in the early morn. Tree branches are now bare, But we don't really care: For they'll be dressed in white, By the frosty snow so bright. Don't be angry: don't be sad, We would be glad to stay. Claudette LeBlanc '5 9 Simone Fortier '59 WHAT LIFE MEANS TO ME Joys and sorrows, Accomplishments and disappointments Living for the morrow and Having something to look forward to Having a home and a family where Problems are discussed and solved. Having friends and Sharing intimate secrets with them. Being able to do what you want to do Because you're alive to do it. Being able to go where you want to go And seeing that you want to see. Yes, life is wonderful yet mysterious, Fascinating yet bewildering. Somehow it's like the mind of man, Ever restless, ever moving, Even when it seems quiet and undisturbed. The surface to the eye is calm and appealing, But beneath its apparent tranquillity Is tremendous movement and alfray. It's elemental like the sun and stars. It is a cosmic thing symbolic in The sleeping restlessness of man's hist'ry, His ceaseless questioning and striving!
