In the place of honor, facing the door, hangs a beautiful Crucifix. Pleasing little trinkets, pretty pictures and a few plants give the room a homey aspect. The huge desk stands right near the door and is almost parallel to the filing cabinet. Near the desk is a chair for the convenience of visitors. Could that chair only talk! What stories it could tell both sad and gay for this is a place where confidences are made. If your conscience is not quite clear you shiver a bit when you are called in by the Principal. On the other hand, you are thrilled when you go to discuss your future plans tif you're a seniorl or to arrange your schedule for the following year and be guided in the choice of subjects best suited to your dream career. Yes indeed, to the office go the happy ones and to the office go the gloomy ones. But however you feel when you go in, you come out with a lighter heart. If problems trouble you, they are solved. If happiness fills your heart, it makes you feel good to know that it is shared. NOTRE-DAME 29 POURQUOI J'ETUDIE LE FRANCAIS? Pourquoi j'etudie le francais? .... Il faudrait alors me demander quelles sont mes origines! .... Louise Babin '54 FRIENDSHIP The Gentle touch of a friendly hand, The light of a knowing smile, The call of a heart that can understand Are things that make life worth while. Therese Cote '51 38 NOTRE-DAME WHAT IS THIS? Congres in session? Not at all. This is a kineposium session of the History class. The topic under consideration is the Encyclopedia, Pius XII and Democracy. When holding a kineposium, the usual procedure is as follows: Cards are passed and several groups are formed, each group having a secretary. Two or three questions are then proposed for discussion. Oftentimes arguments rise to a break- ing point as each student holds his or her opinion to be the best solution to the problem at hand. It is the task of the secretary to Write down the conclusion answer of her group. At the signal the members of each group move to another table as directed. This way no two students will again be together during the discussion. The secretary alone remains at home. At this second session, a discussion of the same questions is resumed, and again the pros and cons are deliberated. As before, the secretary dutifully records the final answer of th egroup. This exercise may be repeated as many as three or four times. Finally, the class is called to order and the secretaries now report their respective findings. Guided by the teacher, the most logical solution is agreed upon and recorded in the minutes of the kineposium. Our history class is sometimes conducted in a panel discussion manner. These discussions other than being interesting and captivating also train us for public speaking. How can there be a blue Monday feeling when a lesson bears all the characteristics of argumentation, either political or economic. These debates make everyone cheerful and happy. No one has time to feel depressed or bored. It is so natural for youngsters to enjoy congenial chatter. As the years roll by, remembrance of these cherished hours spent in the History class will help us to be better patriots, and to love our country more dearly. Recalling how the founding Fathers spoke fearlessly, we, too, will give voice to the principles as promulgated by them in the Declaration of Independence. Would that we were true patriots capable of convincing the world that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights: that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Relevez le niveau de votre vie. Excelsior! H., March 10. LIVE SAFELY - LIVE HAPPILY During the Christmas holidays a dreadful accident happened to two young men of my hometown. One of them was called to Eternal Rest while the other is still on the danger list in a Berlin hospital. The Christmas joy in this particular family was consequently changed to sorrow and distress. How can one be without worry and dark anxiety when accidents occur at the rate of one every second. Mere theory will never make one safe and secure. He spoke wisely, the Roman philosopher Syrus, when he said, and I quote: He is safe who is on guard even when safe. This Safety problem calls for the good will, the effort, the cooperation of each and every one of us. This great, wide, beautiful world would be a paradise to live in if we knew how to live wisely and safely. Too many people seem to ignore the secret to a happy life. They take too many chances thereby jeopardizing their own happiness - that inalienable right given us by God and guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. This land of ours gives us every opportunity to live happily and safely. From its soil we harvest a wealth of foods and minerals. Its forests supply the lumber we need to build our homes, and with an eye turned towards the welfare of its citizens, our country makes and enforces the laws deemed necessary to protect our right to happiness and security. Yet alarming statistics warn us that unless we recognize that our life is our responsibility and unless we acknowledge the fact that accidental deaths are almost 100W unnecessary, much of the happiness of the invidual and of the home will be threatened and lessened. Extensive research and surveys have been made to find out the causes of acci- dents, whether home accidents, vehicular, pedestrian, occupational or otherwise. Heading the list of these causes are the human factors - hurry, carelessness, excitement. NOTRE-DAME 43 Speed is typically American. Foreigners who visit our country are always sure to remark that we hurry too much, trying to crowd many activities into too small an amount of time. Whenever a hurrying motorist passes a yellow light or drives impatiently through heavy traffic, he but confirms the foreigner's statement. Why wouldn't he at least take the time to think of the mournful condition his loved ones would be in should an accident take him out of their lives forever. Safety councils agree that the majority of motor vehicular accidents are the result of drivers' mis- takes. For instance, their failure in adjusting speed to changing road and traffic conditions, driving on the wrong side of the road: refusal to grant the right of way. Vehicle accidents also happen at night when vision is obscured: or in inclement weather when roads are slippery, or whenever children use the street as a play- ground, these are but a few of the violations of traffic laws, both by drivers and pedestrians as well. A grim epitaph used as an advertisement by a Casualty Com- pany read as follows: tquotel He speeded to an early grave never to enjoy the time he saved. funquotel Such a saying should remind every driver to take it easy-to go slow at crossings-to pass only when he can see what's ahead-to heed all traffic safety signs-thereby helping to save some of the thousand lives that otherwise will be lost through motorists' negligence and carelessness. The wheel of his car is a wheel of chance. It must therefore be handled with care. In the home, accidents are often caused by carelessness. Putting off replacing burnt-out lights on the cellar stairs, or repairing a loose step on the front porch. The heating system may be out of order. We know about it but yet we neglect to have it tended to. Not so very long ago a family of five died in flames in a trailer before the firemen could reach the trailer camp. They had put off having their oil burner repaired. Likewise a faulty burner in a refrigerator caused the asphyxia- tion of a honeymooning couple in a New Jersey resort. By checking electric ap- pliances many a heartache can be spared us and many a financial loss can be avoided. It is true that loss of property is not as fatal as loss of life .... Property can be restored whereas loss of life cannot. A good way to have the necessary funds to meet the financial loss we may suffer is to cover our homes and all they contain with a substantial insurance policy. Without proper insurance a lifetime of savings can be swept away with no hope of return. Money builds, fire destroys, but insurance re-builds. Every home ought to be the dwelling place of security, peace, and contentment, that it will be if proper care is taken to safeguard all members of the family, young and old. In hospital wards today more children suffer from accidents than from all the illnesses of childhood put together. Technicians may discover new ways to fight childhood diseases but no wonder drug will ever be found to prevent those accidents now topping the list of childhood menaces. Along with the roadway and home accidents we may mention what is known as the pleasure-with-peril mixture accidents. How many people fail to find in recreational activities, in normally healthful outdoor sports, at the lake, or on the beach, the relaxation, the joy and satisfaction which ought to accompany these pastimes. Unfortunately victims may have put themselves to blame for their lack of caution and prudence while vacationing. Swimming, for instance, should be a beneficial and delightful exercise, provided the sensible rules of swimming 44 NOTRE-DAME are observed. Similar precautions should be taken when boating, canoeing, and especially when hunting, since firearms are responsible for approximately one-third of public non-transportation accidents. So far, we have seen that much of our happiness depends upon our being safe at home, safe on the street, safe at work and safe at play. But there is another contributing factor to our well-being and this factor lies in our playing safe for the prevention of disease. We can easily avoid contracting what is known as social diseases by being faithful to the rules of personal hygiene, by obeying public health laws, and by taking advantage of the excellent physical care and attention that are offered by health officials, by capable and efficient medical doctors. While putting to use all the natural ways and means to insure our safety, we must also pray God to overlook our short-comings and to pay lifetime dividends of health and happiness - to all of us as individuals - to all of us as citizens of our grand and prosperous U.S.A. At home, at school, on the road, at work, and at play, life is what we make it. Let us then, in our small way make this world, under God, a wonderful place where future generations will live safely and happily. NOTRE -DAME 45 CAREER GIRL CONTEST Miss Armeline Jacques '51 was one of the contestants in the Personality Search for the Career Girl of 1951. Following is Armeline's speech given at Burdett College, Boston, Mass., on April 14. ' PERSONALITY June, a friend of mine, was recently given a promotion in the office. The event somewhat bewildered those employees of longer standing with the company. How did she do it? they asked. What has she got that We have not? Yet they felt her superiority and so one evening they took it upon themselves to investigate June's secret to success. After some deliberation they agreed that, though not as pretty as a movie star, June was really attractive. Neat, scrupulously clean and appropriately dressed, she seemed to possess that irresistible poise which usually accompanies good grooming. Her standing, walking and sitting posture was correct at all times while her manners, her speech, her voice, reflected good schooling and personal refinement. In dealing with the office force, June was tactful, understanding and considerate. She never talked out of turn nor interrupted a conversation. Being self possessed, she coped with difficulties and disappointments without making others unhappy about it. A ready smile, a hearty handshape and a generally optimistic attitude, were indicative of June's concern for other people's interests. The light in her eye revealed two universally-admired qualities, kindliness and cooperation. No matter how busy, she always managed to give a helping hand to any of her associates in need of it. No wonder June got the promotion. The sum of her personal traits as compiled by her co-workers constituted the most potent make-up a person can desire to be attractive and resourceful - Personality. Personality is indeed a treasure, but as the diamond gives no indication of its worth until it has been ground, polished and set in a manner worthy of its value, likewise, personality cannot be appreciated unless it radiates through one's appearance and ways of living. To have personality is to possess the charm par excellence, which leads to success in every walk of life. It fosters love in the home, friendship at school, popularity in social circles, power in the business world and success everywhere. MUSIC Music soft and sweet Makes you feel so gay. Armeline jacques '51 IN STALLATION OF OFFICERS On Friday, October 6, the student body gathered in our spacious gymnasium to witness the installation of the class officers for the coming academic year. A word of introduction was given by our Headmaster, Reverend Sister Saint Priscilla. After having expressed her satisfaction to the students for their choice of officers, she invited the newly elected officers to line up on the stage. She then introduced the Senior Class President who in turn acknowledged with gratitude the honor conferred upon him and upon his fellow-officers. The speech that followed was brief but meaningful. He stressed upon the words Discipline and Authority which require respect from all and every serious- mindcd student. He urged his fellow-students to keep up the outstanding good spirit characteristic of Notre-Dame so that the class of 1950-51 may figure as another gold star in the honor of our school. Reverend Sister Saint Priscilla returned to the scene to swear in the officers of the respective classes. Twenty pupils took the following oath. 'tl pledge loyalty to Notre Dame High School. I promise to obey its rules and rcizulations and to fulfill the duties of my office to the best of my ability, thereby giving praise to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and promoting the glory of God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost. The meeting was then adjourned and everybody left the hall with high hopes that the coming year he happy and successful. Qu'el1e soit donc a jamais encouragee! It was January when our beloved Principal decided that an atomic explosion should do the world no harm, so she skillfully launched an attack on the Berlin area - an offensive no general could equal. In response, each of her well-trained divisions took up arms and determined to make its candidate the Sovereign of the Blue and Gold. The experts of Capital Hill were unaware of the battle which raged in northern New Hampshire for ten long days. During this time the Dames fiercely scored tand that is putting it mildlyl as many votes as they collected dimes and quarters. When there were no more nails to bite, nor hair to pull and when the supply of silver coins seemed exhausted, the 435 pupils of N.D.H. surrendered. At this time a keg of dynamite substituted the original pins and needles re- ferred to at the debut of this historic write-up. So Friday, January 26, at 2 p. m., seeing that the fuse leading to this keg was getting shorter by the minute, especially during the hour of reckoning, Sister St. Priscilla appeared before the student body with the mien of a conqueror. She also seemed to enjoy the suspense which per- vaded the auditorium as the candidates and vote computers lined up for the grand announcement. Realizing, however that the insurance policy would not cover nervous break- downs, she ordered the charge! The explosion revealed Green Flash ! Unbelie- able! For the second time, the Fiesta outcome must necessarily be recorded in bright green letters. The Freshmen won the war. Their beloved Sovereign is Queen Lorraine Lessard who obtained ..... votes. At the Coronation ceremony she looked like a fairy queen, graceful and dignified, smiling sweetly to all her subjects. It is one of the oldest legends, yet it is one of the best loved because it is captivating, enchanting. We like to hear it and read it, but we wouldn't even think of seeing anything which resembles it. Yet, the night of February 5, the eager spectators who crowded into the Notre Dame Gymnasium, actually witnessed a beautiful Cinderella story re-enacted right before their eyes. They beheld all the pomp and splendor of a royal ball, all the beauty and enchantment of the land of the fairies, all the dignity and grace of a military march. The audience was spellbound as it gazed at the beautifully decor- ated throne, upon which sat Miss Evelyn Flibotte, last year's Fiesta queen. The heart-tingling of a rhythmic march, filled the auditorium as the parade of proud athletes, head and shoulders erect, walked solemly down the stage and took their respective places on the main floor. The flashing school colors of blue and gold added to the excitement of the scene. When the senior president, Donald Roy announced the royal procession a hush fell over the audience. Priscilla Drouin was the first lady-in-waiting to take her place on the stage. She represented the Sophomore Class. Priscilla was beauti- fully attired in a gown of aqua silk net. Next, came Marguerite Arguin, represent- ing the Junior Class. The color of her gown was old-rose which contrasted beauti- fully with a corsage of white roses. The third royal lady was Olive Lavigne, representative of the Senior Class, whose gown was of pastel green taffeta and dark-green velvet. The crowd applauded profusely each candidate, but when Donald anounced the 1951 queen it went delirious. The contest winner was Lorraine Lessard, a nervous, timid little Freshman, who once thought she had no chance whatsoever. Magnificently attired in a gown of immaculate satin with one of those tiered ruffles skirts of white tulle, Lorraine wore a brilliant rhinestone neck- lace and a lovely corsage of red roses. Amid a deafening clamor of applause, she gracefully made her way to the richly decorated throne. Amidst blinding lights and camera flashes last year's sovereign Evelyn Flibotte placed the Fiesta diadem on the worthy head of Lorraine, thereby investing her with the honor of the 1951 Sports Fiesta Queen. Floral tributes were presented the Queen by her proud Freshmen classmates, and a loving cup by Rev. Father Provost, athletic director of the school. The other contestants also received valuable gifts. At this moment, all the weariness and strain of the previous nerve-racking week vanished. The little Cinderella had now emerged from the trying contest, a victorious Freshman queen. As the royal march was resumed, Queen Lorraine and her royal court passed under an arch of hockey sticks to her observation throne, in the balcony. Then the basketball game got under way.
