STU PRAYER FOR POLAND-DECEMBER 1981 For a thousand years she has suffered, prospered, triumphed, ceased to exist. experienced greatness under strong native rule, been choked under the strangling hands of foreign She has She has She has She has She has powers. She has expanded, She has been chopped to pieces. A cyclic pattern has been set: Periods of great joy, Periods of great sadness. Her people are strong. They have been through the terrors of war, They have experienced the joy of fame and prosperity. In their hearts lives something that can never be taken away. It is the hope given to them by God, Reflected in the Black Madonna of Czestochowa Reflected in the eyes of every coal and factory worker Reflected in the faces of every true Pole. Hope is needed for change, A change in this cycle, An emergence from persecution. Again she must struggle and so must her people. The fire of hope burns brightly, Yet must be continually rekindled. They must fight again the outsiders, They must retain what is rightfully theirs, However long it may take. She is destined to triumph. Faith and patience must be attained, Then a metamorphosis can occur. Peaceful order rather than martial law. The Sadness is burning in all of us, All of us who see what is happening. For those of us whose ancestors came from towns, We feel a feeling, a strength, a faithfulness, She will shake the world, peacefully. Through the grace of God, her people will win. again again again again her cities and will Gdansk prosper. will her people have rights. will she be strong and unified. will she be free. Once Once Once Once Carolyn Frances Mosely '82 DENTS REALLY ALL ...JL li.. K ANOTHER DAY The grass on the lawn is covered by a thick, grey haze that had settled there sometime during the night. The old, rose colored build- ing has taken on a ghostly appearance. The only sound is the wind blowing through the trees. Then, slowly, people arrive as if out of nowhere. They enter the building and it comes to life. Another day of school has be- gun. Laurie Luppa '84 ABDUT . WHAT ARE A New Day As the day moves into night, the wind kicks up its spunky heels and blows upon the waiting world. Sunshine, slowly fades into moonshine . . . the shifting gears of Time. STUDENTS REALL .YA BRIGHT LIGHTS They are beckoning me to another time, another dimension of my life A time, when I make all the decisions and all the mistakes. They are telling me to grow up, and to stand up for what I believe in, A time, when I fight to the finish even though I know I will eventually lose They are begging me to appreciate things as they are, and to dance under the warm sun, A time, when I find my place in this world, no matter how small it may be. I am like the small lingering light that tries so hard to be seen in the deep black sky. Nicole DeLaurentis 82 Y ALL ABDUT? WHAT UNTIL THE END You do not have to be my guide, Though I will follow. You do not have to be my shadow, Though I will lead. You only need to walk with me . . With me down the winding road Of laughter and sorrow. Together we shall see it all. From not until the end, We shall be forever friends. Cherry Kim '82 l I 6 POET, I AM NOT I dream of the unimaginable. I hope for the improbable. I speak of the inconceivable. I seek the untouchable. Others ask why I dream, Why I hope, Why I speak, Why I seek. Sometimes, I too wonder. They say there are sometimes no answers, For they'll never know the questions. They say there is no end to prejudice, For their middle name is black and white. They say we are all equal, For man was meant to be above women. I say no. There will always be answers if we seek. There will be no prejudice if we hope. There will be true equality if we speak. Some say we are doomed, there is no hope. I say no. Many ask why protest, it is futile. I say no. Others say there is never peace without war. Again, I say no. Why do I refer to these people as: They, Some, Many, Others? For I am unique. Perhaps even rare. Why is this so? To some I am a black sheep. I say no . .. I am rare. To some I am only a fool. Isayno Iam me. To some I am a dreamer. I say no . . . I am only dissatisfied. They say some, many, and others are Observers and followers. They only know what they are taught. Thinking for themselves no longer exists. Perhaps it never did. I am not a robot who listens to others. I am an individual . . . An individual concerned with: The past, Present, And future . . . if there is to be one. Things change over time . . . Places, ideas, morals. I cannot stand still and watch, At least not when I am unhappy. People say dreams and reality can not mix. I say no. What am I really? I am . . . an IDEALIST. The executive council is a group of six student body officers: President, Vice-President, Activities Director, Athletic Manager, Treasurer, and Secre- tary. These six officers are elected by the entire student body the year previous to their assuming office. The executive council works for the benefit of the student body. Mimi Sullivan was Student Body President for 1981-82. She said that her job was a challenging one. She found that listening skills and patience were two major prerequisites for her office. Mimi coordinated all the student body meetings and student council proceedings. Joan Hazelwood served as Vice- President for 1981-82. Her job was varied and challenging. Joan coordinated the many ac- tivities that occurred within the school community, from Big- Little Sister Activities, to Ding Bat Day to Dad-Daughter Mar- di Gras. 2 ix., .I The council works toward fostering effective lead- ership for our associated student body. The execu- tive council also serves to promote communication among students for the resolution of their prob- lems and concerns. Above all each officer is avail- able for any student to talk to because our main concern is each student and her view. fl We hope we have served to the students' expecta- tions because this was really our goal. We thank each and every person who contirbuted and made our jobs just that much easier, and we wish next year's student body officers much success. S5 I l I I I I 1 I l graduation june, 1982 This year's commencement exercises were fit- ting for the Class of 1982 because graduation was as unique as the Sailors themselves. The Sailors have every intention of Sailing Awayi' with many of the treasures of the last four years while searching the horizons of life for futures that await them. The introduction of this vol- ume of the Torch asks the question: What are Notre Dame Students Really. All About?,' We think that our class salutatorian , Margaret Va- silakos, and our five valedictorians, Kasi Allen, Winnie Hegarty, Lisa Molinari, Eileen Ridley, and Mimi Sullivan answered for us. Yes, we sail on . . . enriched questioned, and blessed by life. Throughout our four years, we have been known as the goodie- goodie two shoes. Some have loved us for itg some have hated us for it. But if being considerate, intelligent, and friendly is a crime, then we are guilty as charged. -Margaret Vasilakos Each of us is very different from the friend who sits at her side, and it is this variety that has giv- en our class its specialness. We are one united body with many individual goals and dedications. Some of us are scholars, some athletes, some artists, some mu- sicians. Some have worked hard to accomplish goals that the rest of us never knew. And yet, we all did our best to support each oth- er. -Kasi Allen '82 It occurs to me that speaking of women's roles or men's roles may be the ultimate in sexism. After all, when introducing your- self to someone else, do you say, 'I am woman'? Probably not . . . Although our gender is certainly a part of who we are, we are not simply men or women. We are people, and more importantly, we are ourselves. -Wynne He- garty I would like to take Wynne's question a step further by sug- gesting that everyone ask 'What is my role as a world citizen?' Is it not to be concerned with the future of the world? Shouldn't everyone take an active part in the decisions that affect their world? Shouldn't everyone be concerned with the prospect of living instead of being ob- sessed with the idea of merely exisiting? -Eileen Ridley Isn't it now more necessary than ever before to cling to hope? . . . After all, we have only one ship, call it S.S. Earth-and one crew-namely, humanity. We should no more lose hope that humanity with survive the difficulties that threaten our home, the earth, than we would lose hope that our families will survive the difficulties that peri- odically shatter the peace of our personal homes? -Lisa Molinari We shall strive to encourage peace in a troubled world, liberty in oppressive societiesg we shall strive to take responsibility for our futures and become involved citizens. Notre Dame opened our minds and hearts to the prob- lems we face We took this opportunity, worked dilligently, and we are now reaping the re- wards: knowledge, compassion, truth . . . -Mimi Sullivan 1982 JULIE BILLIART AWARDS The Julie Billiart Awards for Academic Excellence are named for St. Julie lthe foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namurl whose courage and vision have challenged and revolutionized educational premises and principles. OUR FRIENIJSHIPS The friendships we have shared Van never be replaeedg The memories of the past Are times we will always face. As seconds become minutes, And days become years, We've all shared many times together Some laughter and some tears. Some one always there When one needed a friendg The warmth of her smile Seemed to have no end. The bond between true friends Can never grow apart: Especially if the feeling Is felt from the heart. The distance we each will travel Cannot affect the loving feelings Of friends who care about each other And are honest and always believing, We trust in the fact, That our friendships will never die And now we are left with the memories Of our yester- years that pass before our eyes On to something great of our hearts design. For many, this symbolized the planting of a memoryg now every year when the rose bush blooms, Karin will be -remembered. Roses had a special meaning for Karing they symbolized life and love. This mass was our way of cele- brating her life and to say that she will live on forever em- bodied in a beautiful rose. spirited people The purpose of spirit activities is to foster a sense of community by providing exper- iences throughout the week that are fun.
