BELMONT, CALs FORNIA In honor of the centennial of the proclamation of Mary as the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION and Patroness of the United States, 1954 has been named the Marian Year. At this time, the American people, above all others, should real- ize their great debt to her, for under her protection the United States has been saved from the ravages of war and under her guidance has become a great nation, a predominantly Christian one, and a leader of the world. In keeping with this Marian Year, we, the girls of Notre Dame, Belmont, in loving gratitude, consider it a privilege to dedicate our yearbook, The Torch, to the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, and for this reason we have chosen for our frontispiece a reproduction of the painting by Murillo on our school staircase. 5 . .
