Math and science, English and history, may be our most important acquirements here. Our best memories may be of that soccer game or of homecoming. But it is cer- tain that making the grades will stick in our minds. We had several new classes to choose from among - humanities, band, Latin and others. The Notre Dame curriculum offered more than ever. And the older classes - art, sociology, home economics - were all taught with the same excellence as ever. All the standard courses remained, art, Spanish, English, math, biology - providing the strong, college preparatory background many of us come to Notre Dame for. This year's academics section features several of the new classes and also focuses on some of the new directions in older classes. 16 Academics Y- Ogg? The freshmen are taught about the contents ofthe Bible while sophomores are busy with the church's history. Juniors learn about morality and seniors learn about themselves and their feelings. Even though religion may not be everyones favorite subject, most students do agree that we should have it. Senior Cathy Chaves commented, l like religion, especially this year because we get involved in ourselves and and others. We just don't read from a book. Kim Kelly, a sophomore said, Because of it, our school shows Christianity. Everyone is friends with everybody, which is what it's all about. Tia Goldston and Ann Chavez discuss moral problems. Latin was part of the foundation for romance languages, such as Spanish and French. Latin also has a strong in- fluence on the English language, and students enrich their own English vocabulary through learning it. Next year Latin ll and Ill will be added as well as German ll. By the end of the year, students in Latin will have a basic understanding of simple Latin. Father Bob has a tough job getting the students to understand the variation of the language. In addition to Drama and Art, Band and Humanities have been ad- ded to broaden the classes offered in the Fine Arts Dept. This way students have a wider range of classes to pick from in order to earn their credits to graduate. Mrs. Jo Dean Salley teaches Humanities. The Class, which is quite small in number, contains only about ten students, all of whom have obtained at least a 2.5 p.a. to be admitted in- to the class. Mrs. Salley commented that she had once taught the course to college students and that she en- joyed teaching it here at Notre Dame. Being in charge of a band takes plenty of patience which we all know Mr. Becker has. He has been busy organizing the eighteen members of the class which consists of: flutes, clarinets, saxophones, drums, trombones, a tuba, and a trumpet. Each of these students have had at least two years ex- perience in their instrumental field, which means they aren't beginners. This new group at ND has added a new life and spirit to masses and pep assemblies. Mr. Becker stated that right now it's just a pep band, but it is continuously improving and within a few years they will have things go- ing strong! Sports 51 Varsity Basketball Once again the Titans produced one of the best basketball teams not only in league but also C.l.F. With a 20 and 8 season record, Notre Dame showed that they could battle with the big guys. They had a tough pre-season schedule, playing mostly 3 and 4- , A schools, which put their winning t ability to the test. As always they s came out victorious. The Titans began their league play with a win against Banning. The winning spirit stayed with the team the rest of the season. They finished second in the Sunkist League and were C.l.F. bound. Under the guidance of Coaches Wuetcher, Breyer, and Jacobsmeyer, the Titans advanc- ed to the third round of C.l.F. play-offs, where they were finally defeated by Blair. We were a very talented team, but because of injuries and other problems, we didn't do as well as we expected. Even though this discouraged us some, we still strove to win, and because of our pro- blems we grew closer as a team. And though we weren't supposed to be a fac- tor, l think we gave some teams a tougher game than they expected, and I was glad to be on the team. To add to things, Robin Block said, We had tun throughout the season even though we didn't win as much as we would have liked to. We learned and im- proved on a lot of things we needed to work on. All the students know who they are, but no one knows anything about them. They are the teachers. To break down the wall of secrecy, the faculty sec- tion features some of the teachers who have been through what we've been through. These lucky few at- tended Notre Dame as high school students. And now they are back, helping us through. Facuhy 85 Father Walter Wilczek Coming to us from Chicago, ll- linois, his home state, with a great deal of enthusiasm, Father Wally brought change and new goals to Notre Dame. As our principal, Father Wally set goals which he felt would improve the educational ex- perience here at Notre Dame and with much spirit and optimism, set out to achieve them. After answering a search by Sister Ann Muckerman, the Superinten- dent of Schools for the Diocese of San Bernardino, Father Wally came 86 Faculty to Notre Dame as our principal. Originally, Father Wally had planned to take some time to study for spiritual renewal. However, when Sister Ann Muckerman asked him to seriously consider taking the job, Father Wally felt a responsibility in the calling, and was pleased to be called to serve the Church at Notre Dame High School. Upon arriving at Notre Dame, Father Wally was a bit disappointed with the appearance of the school. Father Wally felt that the way a school looks is an indication of the amount of respect the students have for each other. However, after meeting the faculty which gave him tremendous support and talking to students who projected con- fidence in themselves and their goals, Father Wally felt the school had great potential. He then went on to say, the students deserve-a school which projects a positive at- titude, and that an atmosphere where everyone on campus is im- portant and deserves to be treated with dignity as the Lord's children, should be created. With this in mind Father Wally began to apply the wisdom of previous ac- complishments to his new calling. Having been involved in education throughout his career, Father Wally served in many important positions. He served as a teacher, drama moderator, Athletic Director and President of the Chicago Catholic Athletic League while working at his Alma Mater high school Weber, and at Gordan Tech. Also in Chicago, he served as a teacher, Chairman of the Guidance Department, Assistant Principal and Principal. Another key job Father Wally held for seven years before coming to Notre Dame, was the position of Superintendent of Catholic High Schools for the Ar- chdiocese. These jobs and many other education related jobs helped make Father Wally a very compe- tent and appropriate Principal of Notre Dame. After working with many high school students, Father Wally has come to understand much about the adolescent years. He feels adolescent years are years of uncertainty, peer pressure, and a value system which is in a turmoil, and that here at Notre Dame an anchor of sanity and structure should be provided. Father Wally ad- ded, nothing can happen without Christ, and that by giving ourselves to the Lord, we can bring about fulfillment and success. Taking all aspects into considera- tion, Father Wally, as Principal of Notre Dame, had one basic message for the faculty, staff and students. ln the same spirit of openness and generosity with which we would turn to other things, we need to turn to the Lord. One of the changes has been the teachers. She feels Notre Dame hasn't really changed that much since her student days, but notes the level of spirit was higher then and that students attitudes were a great deal different. During her years as a stu- dent, Miss Dolan remembers studying under Mr. Bellah, Mrs. Tenney and Mr. Heding. They are now all co-workers along with former fellow students, Mr. Wuetcher, Miss Schulte, Miss de la Cruz and her best and closest friend, Mrs. Favela. Speaking with Mrs. Favela and asking about Miss Dolan led to one word repeated many times describing her as a fellow stu- dent, noisy, noisy, noisy! That isn't all though, her nickname according to Mrs. Favela is Miss Cheerfull and everybody's friend. Outside of being everybody' friend, Miss Dolan kept busy with maintaining an above average grade point average and being on the student council. She was very involved in drama, one of her favorite classes. She was president of the drama club and in 1975 appeared in the school musical, The Un- sinkable Molly Brown. Much has chang- ed since those days she says, there was more discipline and the dress code was enforced more even though we had uniforms. She also thinks the students speak out more and aren't so content to accept s iii what they're told. The students challenge what they're told now, she said. The things she likes best about N.D. are the friendships that grew out of her four years here and the good education she received. Believe it or not some of the teachers that taught Miss De La Cruz are still here! They are Mrs. Benchoff who taught her Spanish and Mr. Heding who taught her Ms. Nanette De La Cruz BA University California Riverside ASB Moderator Spanish I, Il RQ S History of the Media and History of the West. After graduation she kept busy by attending U.C.R., where she received her BA in Liberal Studies. She financed her studies by working at J.C. Penney in the Men's Depart- ment, for four years. When ask- ed what hobbies she had Miss De La Cruz exclaimed, I LOVE RACQUETBALL! Traveling and photography are also favorites. As for returning to N.D. she never planned on it. Getting a job as an elementary teacher was what she had in mind till Mrs. Benchoff and Mr. Heding convinced her otherwise. I met up with Mr. Heding and Mrs. Benchoff and they sug- gested that I apply at Notre Dame, she explained. Landing the job came as a complete shock for our alumni Spanish teacher. She didn't plan on returning, but, once she did, and had her first experience teaching, she decided it was fun. When asked about any changes that have taken place she proclaimed, There'hasn't been really any major changes except for the uniforms we wore. She was asked what was the best thing about being a student here at Notre Dame. Mrs. Favela said It was fun and enjoyable. l had it to com- pare with my old school. She said that the best thing about , U, being a teacher was Talking 'sti to the students and getting to tis W knowthem better. lasked her ' if student attitudes have changed. No, they haven't, but their styles and fashions sure have. l Since graduation Mrs. Favela rsls M has been quite busy, going to is school and receiving a social science degree, getting mar- ried, bowling and having a baby boy. Could it be that she answered too quickly? ls she trying to convince us, and herself? Did she even want to be a teacher in the first place? Miss Schulte said herself that she originally was an aspiring pattern drafter. She says she was extremely shy and quiet, never saying three words, throughout high school. Mr. Bellah, who nurtured her young artistic abilities, had this to add to this description of a high school aged Miss Schulte: While attending, she was only two feet, three inches tall so we hardly saw her for the first three years. She did excellent work on a small scale after we cut the pencils in half so they wouldn't be too heavy and sat her on two chairs. lf Mr. Bellah is correct, how could she handle her cooking, sew- ing, camping, and fishing Cher hobbiesj? Since she never planned on returning to N.D. Miss Schulte was asked what prompted her homecoming after five years of college and one year of teaching nursery school? She replied that she liked the at- mosphere of going to school here. She realized, though, that students' attitudes have changed greatly since her stu- dent years here. Students are more vocal now, she said, and that's better than not saying anything. Miss Schulte declared that teaching Home Ec. here is fun because she likes work- ing with kids. Although she likes being a teacher more, she still knows what being a stu- dent is Iike because she is still taking classes at Cal Poly. The best thing about going to school at N.D. was summed up by Miss Schulte herself - the spirit and the friends. As the years go by, one class after another graduates from Notre Dame and each leaves with their own identi- ty. They leave with the thoughts of what made their par- ticular class unique. The class of 1983 is not special in size or number, but it is special in that they are the last class to have experienced formal initiation on Notre Dame's campus. The week of initiation back in '79 was dubbed nerd week , a memorable week that some choose to forget. Since that time Kangaroo Court and all of its formalities have faded out of sight. School and Diocesan rules no longer permit on campus initiation such as Kangaroo Court, but every freshman to pass through high school never forgets that first year whether initiated or not. We can look back and remember the trials for being accepted andlaugh, but then quickly come back to reality and remember that for every peak we reach there is a mountain to climb for it, and that it won't be long until we must begin again at the bottom for our longest journey to come - the one leading us beyond N.D. and into the future. Each day is filled with problems and joys for all of us to endure, but maybe with the good times to remember from our years in high school, we can learn to take every day for what it is. We'll say goodbye to you, class of '83, and farewell to a tradi- tion that leaves with you. Being an underclassmen is an embarrassing time of life - so many social blunders that can't be helped. Like asking the girl of your dreams for a date and then having to have mom drive you there and pick you up. lt's also a time of growing, attaining new privileges - like a drivers license. Hop around any circle of sophomores and chances are they'II be talking about a car they hit or almost didn't hit. Some things never change: the fun of going to dances when it was still cool too, the rush of a real live car date for the first time, watching class after class graduate and being able to tease the new underclassmen - someone else is finally at the bottom of the heap!!! For the first few meetings they worked on flowers and stared at the bare flat-bed. After that, things started to take shape. Slowly, the frame went up. Everyone helped in their own way, whether it was hammering or passing around cookies. The Juniors really got into painting. They not only painted the float, but they painted each other. Each day you heard more people saying, Wowl This float looks awesome! Time was growing short and the meetings were getting longer. The night before Homecoming, the Juniors had an all night float meeting. Everyone was busy finishing up. It was three A.M. when they finally turned in. The next morning, everyone was up early, ready to go to the parade. They tied for second place, but were satisfied knowing they worked so hard and went for broke. .,-, K l 41 X I W f 'I wg.. N 7 A? About 68M of our seniors and 6306 of the juniors shoot to make Cen- tipede their favorite. Around 53'M1 of the sophomores and a surprising 85M of the freshmen jump to make Donkey Kong their overall favorite. Most of the school en- joys hopping to safety in Frog- ger, eating the ghosts in Pac- man, and destroying anything in your way in Tempest. Great places to go to test your skills at these games are the Flipper Flapper in Riverside Plaza and JF? is ,, Q s T - 4 4 Q. ii sxw x 'Z' K l' 5 5 Castle Park in La Sierra. The students atfNotre Dame spend between one and five dollars a week on video games. Many people play every day but there are quite a few who don't like to play that often - maybe once a week. Nowadays teenagers really need to escape every now and then to release the pressure they have built up. When we look back at our days at Notre Dame we are going to remember football games, pizza, crazy friends, rowdy assemblies, and video games. if ,Q Monica Amatulli DeborahAmrich - Martin Arias tji Angela Armendariz Karla Armstrong Gwendolyn Balough -s 138 Sophomores QE 'QP s i Ei Q 5,,,.t. if Q Deborah Barnett Dawn Barnicoat Kimberly Behnke Lisa Beniani Robin Block 35 M ..... , - Y is 1 Scott Brown Jeanete Burke Kathleen Cahill Corina Carpino Josie Carrizosa 3 ,Q as X 'Q sm l E K . 1 4:-gy. 1' i ,S William Boere Anthony Borges Elizabeth Bowers Michael Bredemann Teresa Bronowski el ' I ' is .. - I' ' if . The beginning stages are typified by unbelievable eagerness on the part of the freshman student. A common manisfestation of this is carrying books around during break and lunch. If an upperclassman should ask them why, they mumble an answer with trembling chin and tear filled eyes. This stage is usual- ly over with by the time they can participate in the fire drills without getting hysterical and flinging their frail bodies on to the grass on the athletic field. The second stage is a stage of change and maturing. For instance the freshmen now participate in pep rallies as opposed to sitting wide-eyed with their hands folded. By the end of the year the freshman has learned the survival technique of adaptation and they are on their way to learning the fine art of being a senior. Good luck! Nike Mercadel gives it an extra effort during the obstacle course race. Spirit week started off fantastically. Many people participated in Greek Mythology Day held by the Seniors. The attire of the day was togas. At lunch time the Olympics were held. The events included a tricycle race, ex- cuse contest and a football throwing contest. The tricycle race was set on a course that went through many people and things. If you were Ms. Zix would you accpet an excuse from someone that their sundial broke down? That was just one of the many excuses that were used in the excuse contest. Even Hercules would have had problems winning the football toss. The object was to hit a lid, that was a few hundred Mike Garcia was really mixed-up. feet away. The Seniors viewed the day as an absolute success. On Tuesday, spirit was not slowed down. The Sophomores had Army Fatigue Day. So many people dressed up that I thought I was at an ex-military camp or in training. The competition at lunch was proof of my thoughts. An obstacle course was set up on the field. It was a rough course but many people, in- cluding faculty members par- ticipated and reportedly had a great time. Wednesday was the day everyone was mixed-up, because Freshmen had mix-up Day. Boys were dressed as housewives and girls were dressed as businessmen but many people seemed to forget how to match on that day. Purple socks were worn with brown outfits, clothes were worn backwards and everyone was just plain mixed up. At lunch there were many different tugs of wars. Classes struggled to beat other classes and girls tried to beat guys. Though there were many mismatched students the day was loaded with spirit. On the last day of spirit week ac- tivities the Juniors held What I wan- na be when I grow up day. It was a day where if you were sick there were plenty of doctors, nurses and mommies to take care of you. There was a wide variety of career choices expressed by students in their ap- parel. I am sure Fr. Bob was happy! At lunch a costume contest was held, by the Juniors. The winners were chosen by other students and the winning costumes were well deserving. Everyone had fun! The Notre Dame Musical, Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof, this year's musical production, was the twelfth show since Notre Dame began presenting shows in 1972. Sister Bridget Marie, the principal of Saint Francis de Sales at the time, con- tacted Shirley Vander Linde to direct the first show, She chose to do Little Mary Sunshine because she thought it would be fairly easy. She didn't forsee the trouble she would have persuading the Notre Dame boys to audition. They heard the title and knew immediately they didn't want to be in any sissy musical. But Sister Bridget stopped boys in the halls, told them they were going to be in the play, and produced one of the best male choruses we've ever had, accor- ding to Mrs. Vander Linde. And so began Notre Dame's tradition of ex- cellent musicals. When Notre Dame and Saint Francis merged and became co-educational, Mrs. V. ap- propriately chose to do Guys and Dolls. Other productions included: t'Damn Yankees, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Mame, Hello Dol- ly, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Li'l Abner, Finian's Rainbow, Oliver, and last year's The Music Man. Professional sets from San Ber- nardino's Civic Light Opera have been used since 'Help Dolly in 1977. Before that the sets were made of cardboard. Most of the other materials are rented from New York. A few alumni faculty members, in- cluding Mrs. Luksich and Miss Dolan, have been in Notre Dame's produc- tions. Romances have blossomed from the musicals. Alumni Cindy McKay and Tim Richardson, who played romantic leads, met on the set of The Unsinkable Molly 168 Activities Brown. They dated during the show and got married two or three years ago. The response to the musicals wasn't very good until about five years ago. Since then it has become much more accepted. Abbey Dickey, who has conducted the or- chestra for the past five years says that musicians call her to ask to be in Notre Dame's musical orchestra. The audience is building every year. This year, Fiddler, was performed to an almost full house both nights. Miss Tirabassi received a letter from some people she doesn't even know praising Notre Dame's wonderful productions and telling her they never miss one of Notre Dame's shows. Mrs. V. chooses which show to do by having preliminary auditions and deciding what kind of talent there is. Her number one factor in casting a show is voice or singing ability, then acting ability, and then the look for the part. Mrs. V. said there was a lot of talent this year. She chose Fid- dler on the Roof because it had a lot of leads and a lot of crowd scenes so everyone could be involved. Miss Tirabassi raised money to produce the show by selling ads in the program, patrons spaces, selling candles as a fund raiser, and selling tickets. Mrs. V. gave one of the best reasons why Notre Dame puts on these shows year after year. She said it gives a person a feeling of their own self worth when they can get up in front of a large audience and sing and dance and act. Father Wilczek showed his appreciation for all the hard work of putting the musical together by giving the cast and crew a day off of school for the first year ever. Mrs. V. said, When students from Notre Dame go away to college is when they realize how good the shows were. xl- I 1 me A .r-wi! ff . ,--:ig , vUNN!'1 'fsxw-WM ,as fs ,ff kr 'L X85 ' A 'S' X- W ...M Q-XX D WM A r 'mg ax ' oe :bw .
