if dedication jari kanerva e change student it all started out when jari kanerva, an exchange student from finland, went to a place called youth for understanding , which is a teenage international student exchange program. the people there had an interview with jari and found out his interests, hobbies and what country he would like to visit. mrs. taylor, faculty member, working independent of jari, wrote to youth for understanding to see if there were any exchange students that would be coming. taking into consideration j ari's enjoyment of sailing, mrs. taylor suggested that he stay with justin mc carthy's family because they too enjoy this sport. in asking them how they feel with jari staying with them, they said that if jari had the fortitude to come eight thousand miles from his home to live with strangers for a year, the least they could do was give him a fair shot at their family. jari being with them has taught them alot about each other, as mr. mc carthy put it, people are the same everywhere--only their languages are different. he feels jari has given, in every way, just as they have given to him. one of jari's main reasons for wanting to come here was to learn better english. some of his desires are centered around electronics, and math. his hobbies include sailing, scuba diving, tennis, and skiing. in finland four languages are required: english, swedish, german and finnish. jari feels very positive about the congenial atmosphere here at notre dame. the school in finland jari previously attended ranged in different age to such an extent he feels it the campu people difficult to relate to. jari truly loves the people here at notre dame and has enjoyed being here this year. when mr. and mrs. kanerva visited they seemed to enjoyed the friendliness of the school. jari wants to came back and visit, but is not sure if he will make tl1is visit a permanent stay. one thing jari really enjoys about california is the short distance there is from the mountains and the beach. he loves the weather, it is much like fin1and's. j ari's being here has turned out just fantastic and we all want to thank you, jari, you have gained just as we have from yourbeinghere. you are a very beautiful and warm person, we all loved having you here ! I mrs. stanovich,'who works at youth for understanding, will be checking at n. d. to see if anyone would be interested in this type of program. if you are interested please contact her at 17141 862-3872. jari seems to like american girls. jari and a few friends.
