A m A c gf if ' 'W NW if if f , , , -sa nn L M madness, confusion and frustration were the three words to describe registration day. when a handful of students had volunteered to help out with registration, they didn't realize what they were in for. to explain a simple computer card system to the students seemed easy enough, but not so. as if this was not confus- ing enough, getting desired classes in order and not overlapping each other was a whole new upset in the counsel- Q V 1' A my . ' nga- - rrwi K I - f f. . , A ,..,, Qr, Q M ' 'K 1 .Q Ai it if mf af f 'ES L X r '2 2 S 4 Q 1 f ,qw .3 , 'A s r '-:2' Q A 5 oroortt , , : 3 I? ,, on in Q ,f ' ' zqgxggs, , S following in the age-old tradition of frosh initiation, this year's freshman class was put to the test of proving their worthiness to be a part of notre dame. the all but merciful seniors posed as wardens, keeping their prisoners, dressed in san quentin black and white, in line. in order to keep escapes at a minimum, a ball and chain was clamped to each fresh- man's ankle. for fear of some gruesome punishment, most fresh- men gladly obeyed senior orders, whether it be a song and life-savers, or assembling with other prisoners. highlighting the week's activities was kangaroo kourt, where the seniors tried those freshmen who had infringed upon the guidelines set. crimes such as disobedience and violations of the uniform code were met with harsh punishment as being put through the firing squad and crawling through spaghetti. living up to their inhumane reputation, the gang prepared an electric chair for the one poor soul guilty of the ultimate offense, impersonating a senior. the freshmen and seniors ended their week of activities with the celebration of mass and a picnic at divine word seminary. the fresh- men were warmly accepted into notre dame. ,L , Q' I A I .V , if i' wi' 4, - . JJ v 1f'x, .ja 'zgff ,f , of , .1, a X X N , f,ff,g,fy4554- f 415 r if , :Q X , aa K 15 r . r oo ,X 'LX Q how do the cheerleaders do this ? we want our mapo! ,gk lr. 14, senior jury Condemns freshman oh oh--spagettios between my toes! exclaims criminals at kangaroo court. blindfolded debbie gudde- 15 if dedication jari kanerva e change student it all started out when jari kanerva, an exchange student from finland, went to a place called youth for understanding , which is a teenage international student exchange program. the people there had an interview with jari and found out his interests, hobbies and what country he would like to visit. mrs. taylor, faculty member, working independent of jari, wrote to youth for understanding to see if there were any exchange students that would be coming. taking into consideration j ari's enjoyment of sailing, mrs. taylor suggested that he stay with justin mc carthy's family because they too enjoy this sport. in asking them how they feel with jari staying with them, they said that if jari had the fortitude to come eight thousand miles from his home to live with strangers for a year, the least they could do was give him a fair shot at their family. jari being with them has taught them alot about each other, as mr. mc carthy put it, people are the same everywhere--only their languages are different. he feels jari has given, in every way, just as they have given to him. one of jari's main reasons for wanting to come here was to learn better english. some of his desires are centered around electronics, and math. his hobbies include sailing, scuba diving, tennis, and skiing. in finland four languages are required: english, swedish, german and finnish. jari feels very positive about the congenial atmosphere here at notre dame. the school in finland jari previously attended ranged in different age to such an extent he feels it the campu people difficult to relate to. jari truly loves the people here at notre dame and has enjoyed being here this year. when mr. and mrs. kanerva visited they seemed to enjoyed the friendliness of the school. jari wants to came back and visit, but is not sure if he will make tl1is visit a permanent stay. one thing jari really enjoys about california is the short distance there is from the mountains and the beach. he loves the weather, it is much like fin1and's. j ari's being here has turned out just fantastic and we all want to thank you, jari, you have gained just as we have from yourbeinghere. you are a very beautiful and warm person, we all loved having you here ! W'-I when mr. plutko's history of the media class visited star-filled universal stu- dios, the idea of meeting real movie stars kept eyes open for familiar faces. their dreams became reality as the tour tram approched the dressing room area of the studio and the one and only telly savalas stepped out of his dressing room. entranced by her idol, junior betsy de marco ran toward mr. savalas with heaven in her heart and a lollipop in her hand. astounded by her generosity, telly bent down and kissed betsy lightly on the cheek. the classes' day was complete! 'PAGE' xi? in 0 5 5 IV st george sharp came back to notre dame to mystify and amaze the stu- dent body with the awesome art of hypnosis. well experienced in this field, mr. sharp put his volunteers in a trance, and through the power of suggestion, was able to make the people act according to his orders. the group performed as dancing instructors, reminisced over early childhood, and dazzled the audience with electrifying football plays, among other things. solo acts in- cluded romeo and juliet, geraldine, and burt reynolds in centerfold pose the overall show proved to be most amusing and entertaining. danny duclos repeats bert reynold's famous nude pose. roberta hankins and kitty o'dougherty sing imaginary babies to sleep. udents h ld spellbound Q ten little i ans above: walter hackett strangles joanne rodriguez, his tenth victim. right: jay krueger, victim of a poisonous drink, falls to his death. below: joanne rodriguez protects herself from her suspect, james staylor. the drama department presented ten little indians, an agatha cristie murder mystery. under the direction of mr. brown, and his assistant, larry green, the talented cast kept the audience on the edge of their seats. the realistic sets used in the performance were produced by mr. bellah's art classes. cooperation and enthusiasm from the entire crew made the production a success. mr. brown and cast applaud opening night success. literature: a child's jo no one can play like first graders, but everyone, including the students of 4. , f children's lit. and sister brigid marie had fun on children's day. it was barbara casey and annette de ruyter, students from the children's lit. class, Who sug- gested children's day as a project as an alternative to an exam. sr. brigid agreed to the idea, so they proceeded to organize it, sticking it out bravely to the end when they observed fantas- tic results. r - Q y on the chilly morning of december 12, notre dame's campus was enhanced by the presence of costumed students representing different characters from children's fairy tales and verse. throughout the day, the campus was visited by over 400 children who were involved in games and stories prepared for them by children's lit. students. they really enjoyed them- captain nice soars over disbelievers in a single bound. of A M , selves and were so mesmerized by the authenticity of the characters that they entered into the land of fantasy with sheer delight. martha dale and jeanette curtis Hclowning around. above: i don't remember a blind mouse in the story of the three little pigs. below: argh! that was my toe! cries sheriff john o'co1mell of nottingham. roberta hankins makes a jaunty mary poppins entertainment and spiritual development assemblies break the monotony of the school day and also give the students a chance to get together to have a celebration, of mass, see teachers being auctioned off, or to cheer on the titan teams. the assemblies were a source of entertainment as Well as spiritual development, and also lifted the spirit of all the titans as well. mr. naggi gives it that good old titan try. an n. d. assembly demonstrating the martial arts. '-ugh. above: fr. ron celebrates mass with the entire n. d. student body. right: 11. d. cheer- leaders do their thing to promote spirit. porn poms show emotions as they perform clever skit at a pep assembly Q y y 5. my ,A qu ., V' 1 K memories in the making this year's christmas ball was graced by the of 92 couples, all of which donned their s a happy affair presence ' the evening. it wa , ' nt high- finest attire for a night filled with much mirth and sentime , lighted by the music of higher ground, bernie mocho, the a. s.b. social chairman, along with several other students, decorated the u.c.r. com mons lounge to fit the christmas season so well, even santa claus dropped by. hristmas a time for celebration above: fr. john 'wadeson serves communion. below: sophomores act out readings at christmas mass. 40 before separating for the winter break, christmas excitement ran high on the nd cam pus, and what better way to remember the lord's blessed birthday than to share in the eucharist? the entire student body and fac- ulty gathered for a concelebrated mass, em- phasizing the reality of our campus commun ity. various students also took part in the musicplaying and a dramatic interpretation of the readings. it was evident that we can exist in peace--as american youth alive in the body of christ. guitarists and singers harmonize with the joy of the season. basketball homecoming the second annual basketball homecoming in notre dame's co-ed history, was highlighted by the crowning of larry green as king, a. s.b. president and a senior class standout. the homecoming court, was composed of seven notre dame outstanding young men, three senior and four juniors, popularly elected by their classmates on the basis of personality, spirit, and contributions to notre dame. the senior class was represented by larry green fes- cort sharon marquezy, greg wuetcher fescort bernadette mochoj, and jack carousso Qescort mary ann huckabonej. the juniors were represented by john hickey Qescort annette walkery, jeff singletary Qescort eileen kramery donny kramer qeseort shary eiserj, and frank pacific fescort donna sullivany. rev. robert nagler, a. s. b. moderator announced the 1974-75 homecoming king and presented larry, a two year king, with a silver identification bracelet as a token of his honor. the night had a perfect finish when the titans defeated the c. s. d.r. cubs and added another titan victory to the season record. a surprised larry green is announced homecoming king. 4 5 5 Ti 5 1975 basketball homecoming princes: jeff singletary, larry QT 9911, 811' eg wuetcher, jack carousso, don kraemer, and john hickey. 41 mini-courses - a chance for the notre dame students and faculty, it was three days of pure enjoyment. the students had a wide variety of mini-courses from which to select, from sailing and olympic weight- lifting, to hospital experience and skiing. it was truly a time of fun and learning. the faculty seemed to appreciate the three days of rest and enjoyment. many students also had the chance to get acquainted with some of the new teachers. the mini-course days served as an enjoyable and educational break between semester. we look forward to an even more intriguing and diverse program next year. to learn and grow left top: mike crider views the monkeys at close range. left bottom: alan slocum and friends attempt to launch their sailboat. above many delicious and attractive cakes came out of the cake-decorating class. left: excited frosh get ready to exercise an -if i 4 their bodies by bike riding. below: in- structions in macrame involved students in making belts and key chains. i ' T mr. porter, cathy brown, pat spires, Inarsha akers, and pam how, shop for food to use during their mini-courses. - Q fig , is 4 - 5 if ggi 1 B -Q mrs. frye notices similarities between the monkeys and her science classes below: fr. nagler making sure everything is ship-shape. right: ms. pearce imitates the mating call of the wild orangutan. N-S.. fired up frosh october 16, 1974, was a big day for colleen brinson, heather mc kay, joanie roberts, and janice waggoner. that was the day the frosh cheerleaders were chosen. there's never been more spirit in four girls before. they proved their spirit in leading their class of '78 in many pep rallies and assemblies to obtain the spirit stick. with their excitement, enthusiasm, and pride, they encouraged the ii'osh teams to many victories. 1975 frosh cheerleaders: Qtop to bottoml colleen brin son, joanie roberts, heather mc kay, and janice waggoner. flags wave on nd titan i there is a saying three's a charm , well, in the instance of our flag- gies this certainly was the case, in this third year of the flag squad being in existence at notre dame,they have strived for perfection and have achieved it. they were one of the few flag squads invited to perform at a los angeles rams game. this was one of the most exciting events they could have hoped for. the flag firls then won a first place trophy at camp for the hardest- working flag squad, which they certainly deserved. when the riverside city competition for pep squads came around, these six girls, competing against eight other schools performed the best they know how and walked away with a third place trophy to add to their collect- ion. all in all, this year's flaggies have proved to be perhaps not one of the most popular squads, but the one least likely to be forgotten! the 1974-75 flaggirlsz ftopy kelli barnes fcaptainjg fmiddley sharon marquez, joyce wilson, debbie villarealg fbottomy kathy dente. l steppin' out with spirit practice, practice, practice! that was the story for notre darne's songleaders. all summer long they wanted to be perfect for camp in august. as the other pep squads came back from camp with loads of trophies and ribbons, they were greatly encouraged. competitions came up sooner than they had expected, and their spirits Were lifted by winning one of the first spirits sticks given out. they received 54 ribbons, and one superior trophy. this and all of the spirit from the students and faculty made this year a profitable and enjoyable one. the 1974-75 songleaders: qtopj nancy schrup, sue o'connell, barb kain fcap- tainy, mary santangelo, cindy me kayg fbottomy sheree sereg. ..w.f,-W ' f r n..ua-L4 1wz1 ln . ,. Y- f -7 - drill team this year's drill team, despite its small size, has shown itself as 'a squad full of spirit and enormous pride. they have reflected the over-all attitude of the notre dame pep squads. it has been a rather long year, with summer practices beginning in june. these practices were tedious early sessions of basic moves. the summer season was highlighted by a summer camp, which four of the girls attended. they came home with knowing that they were the fourth-hardest Working team in attendance, chosen from over one hundred teams. even with this small success, there was no rest. practice continued, and the opening night drew nearer. the drill team had to be ready to entertain at the first football game. drill team has shown overwhelming school spirit, and has managed to find fun and enjoyment along with the work. it has been a new experience for most, and the girls will not soon forget this successful year. 1975 drill team members: debbie gudde, joanne hornsby, allison dale, jan zuppardo, karen vincenzi, rose huerta, marsha akers, vickie prichard, karyl store, patty burton, joyce spidel, patty simon, athena bryson. A215 QQ the american association of teachers of spanish, portuguese and the national spanish honor society granted in 1974, a charter to establish a new chapter of the spanish honor society to notre dame, known as chapter juan ruiz de alarcon, a prominent spanish literary writer, the honor society of notre dame is under the direction of mrs. carmen benchoff. the only prerequisite to membership is a grade average of b or above in spanish. although the shs is just planting its roots, its members hope to engage in worthwhile extra- curricular activities in the future. ' the letter ladies have made a significant contribution the legacy of women in sports at n.d. they are on their way to becoming one of the vital influence in women sports. f ,,,,,,,,,..,..,,...wv-1-vu-0 ,Q sports barriers pace way to c.i.f. the 1974 cross country team, coached by lyle porter and assistant coach mike erickson, had another outstanding season and qualified for c.i. f. finals for the first time in notre dame's history. the team finished the season with a varsity record of 7 wins and 2 losses, while the junior varsity fell only once in compiling a record of 8 wins, 1 loss. this year's varsity finished in the top ten teams in southern california while qualifying for the c. i. f. finals. the seven varsity members who led the titans to the finals were jack carou eddie bickel, bob mojarro, charlie hendricks, mark wolnisty, rudie alfaro, and martin svika. jack carousso, this year's most valuable runner, set a new school record of 9:34 at the white gates home course, the old record was held by mike glennon. cross country awards for 1974 went to varsity captain jack carousso as most valuable, with eddie bickel being named most inspirational and mark wolnisty as most improved among the titan varsity. on the j.v. level, anthony Vasquez received the m.v.p. award, most inspirational went to eileen kraemer, and j. v. captain john wathen received the award for most improved. jack carousso and grant younglove lead the pack. Goottomj tim connelly, mike fahey, tim beld, alan schoelen, pat fahey, mike nelson, greg wuetcher, jerry soria, coach polkinghorn. a spectator's View of nd's great varsity baseball team. notre dame's baseball team has great hopes for its 1975 season. the titans are strong in pitching, led by returning lettermen dave ellis, terry mc auliffe, and mike fahey. hitting is also a strong point with seniors mike o'donnell and jerry soria and junior mike nelson lead- ing the way. under the new coaching of rick polkinghorn, notre dame is emphasizing agressive baserunning and batting. lead by co-captains dave ellis and mike o'donnell, the titan's have a 6-1 record and have their eyes set on an arrowhead league championship. another nd batter improves his batting average. batter prepares to attempt a score for nd. nd fieldin abilities are characterized by power and skill. nd batting proves success- ful as another batter takes his base. jv baseball this year's junior varsity baseball team faces the challenge of excellence that last year's 14-5 arrowhead league champions established. what is more, the inexperience of this years team may tell since only robbie quinn, danny pacific, john wathen and mike mezey return to bring the only high school experience with the skill they have, though, these four and the talents of such new- comers as randy stark, paul martinez, ruben navarro and arnie escaiceza should bring notre dame its 2nd consecutive jv title under coach brown's tenure, he thinks they will.
