Not bad. . . not bad at all! That phrase aptly describes Notre Dame High School's fortunes on the varsity basketball trail over the 1973-74 campaign as the Titans made the most of virtually an all under-classman roster to make it to the CIF post-season playoffs for the second straight year under the reins of Coach Ray Plutko. The Titans entered the year with not one front-line player returning from last year's stellar club and the pre-season polls had the Titans pegged for no better than third place in the Arrowhead League. However, defense and a little pride proved the equalizers as the Titans finished a strong second place in the league, won the 1eague's defensive championship for the second straight year and compiled an impressive 14-10 record overall. Highlight of the year had to be the third place finish in the always strong Carpinteria lnvitational and the opening-round 65-62 upset over perennial power L.A. Baptist. The Titans were down by 13 points in the final game, before coming back to nip Tehachapi for third place honors. Another highlight would be the Titans appearance in the CIF A Poll for the second year in a row, the Titans appearing as high as 8th in early February, before finishing 14th . . . not bad considering there are 103 schools in the A division!
