' T 1 -.. f' The Varsity Team: L to R: Top row: Coach Lyle Porter, Mike Wathen, Mike Glennon, Pat Flaherty, Asst. Coach Kurt Brees, Chris Manning, Bob Mojarro, Will Jacobsmeyer, and Mike Erickson. With the start of Notre Dame's third Cross Country season, things looked bright. With five Seniors on the Varsity team, an impressive season was envisioned by Coach Lyle Porter, Spirit's were high but the team's pace was all but swift. Yet, after the first two meets, pace quickened, moral quickened, minds quickened. They went on to easily defeat Moreno Valley, North, Rubidoux, Perris and Arlington, both on the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels. In the League Finals at Webb, Notre Dame qualified for C.l.F. but failed to make the Finals at Mt. Sac. Leading representatives from Notre Dame in the C.I.F. competitions were, Mike Erickson, 19th, Charlie Hendricks, 37th, followed by Pat Flaherty, Mike Wathen, Mike Glennon, Eddie Bickel and William Jacobsmeyer. Mike Glennon set a new school Varsity record and Jack Carousso broke the J.V. record at the White Gates Course. With changes in the rules of the C.l.F., girls were allowed to compete with the boys on the same level for the first time. Inspiring the team on the J.V. level and even showing some of their opponents how to run, were sophomore Claire Dalzell and Junior Tina Radzik.
