Notre Dame goes far in cross-country competition Although starting just its second season in the CIF- sanctioned sport, Notre Dame came through with an Impressive effort from a wealth of talented individuals as Coach Flay Plutko's club posted an overall combined record of 14 wins and just 2 losses - both the varsity and junior varsity levels sporting 7-1 ledgers. Outstan- ding balance, dedication and the individual desire to excel characterized the 1972 edition as the Titans not only came through with an impressive won-lost record, but qualified as a team for the CIF playoffs as well. In the CIF semifinals, the Titans compiled 138 points to finish sixth in their A division, just missing a finals berth as the top five teams qualified. Kurt Brees also came through with a first for the Green and Gold as the talented senior qualified for the CIF Individual Championship, before being defeated by some of the top runners in the Southland. As for memories, upset wins over Riverside North and the big one over Corona will no doubt linger on, while the likes of Kurt Brees and Mike Wathen have their individual efforts of having run under 10 minutes for the two-mile distance. With just four seniors on the roster, the prospects look bright for the 1973 edition as Notre Dame adds another chapter to its well-balanced program of in- terscholastic competition at the secondary level.
