Determination and drive mark 1972 football season Another year of football has ended at Notre Dame. Yet unlike many which preceded it, this year will not be remembered for thrilling victories and stunning upsets. Rather, it will be known as a year when a tremendously talented team stumbled time after time and finally fell completely in the deep snows of Big Bear. Led by co-captains Rick Machado and Tim O'Doherty, the Titans had such stalwart stars as John Moser, Darron Smith, Keith Gunther, Tony Ybarra, Kip Poutre, Cary Voll, and John Kuschell, all who received the All-League title. Despite this talent, the Titans dropped their opening game to North. It was Coach Stangel's first opening game loss, and everyone should have known things weren't going to be easy. ND next beat Norco, but Rubidoux and Corona both scored vic- tories at the Titans' expense. When the season opened, a sigh of relief went up, for the Titans were predicted to destroy the league. True to form, ND stomped Webb, CSDR, and Aquinas. John Moser had developed into a superstar, having broken the single game rushing record, and breaking many more. Rick Machado and Keith Gunther were en- joying tremendous seasons. But when the Titans met Big Bear in six-inch drifts of snow, the Bears stole a vic- tory and the league title. For the Titans, it was a heart- breaking loss, and when CIF came, Notre Dame was beaten for the second straight year in sudden death, this time by Valley Christian, and an unforgettable foot- ball season came to an end. i ,. ,H ABOVE LEFT: The tough Titan defense puts a Valley Christian runner to the turf.
