J lr?-f I F OOTBALL One of the most successful seasons record-wise in Titan football history, yet one of the most frustrating as well, came to a pre- mature and heartbreaking end the night of November 26. The Green Machine Battled to a scoreless tie through 48 minutes , only to be bounced out of the C , I, F, playoffs in the tiebreaker period, 1-0 by Los Angeles Baptist, a team Notre Dame defeated in 1970 to win the C , I, F, crown, Prior to this, ND had struggled through an undefeated season. That may sound strange, but in a league the Titans were expected to dominate, they had all kinds of troubleg beating San Dimas and Aquinas by 6, La Sierra by 13, CSDR by 11 and Big Bear by a single point. The Titans were not without individual standouts, however. Sen- ior co-captains Joe Basilone and Chuck Machado seemingly carried off every award in sight, as both made All-League and All C ,I, F, , and Machado additionally was named to the All-Riverside County Football Team and Arrowhead League-Defensive Player of the Year. Other Titan all leaguers included Daron Smith, Tim O'Doherty fboth were selected on offense and defense as was Basiloney, Bob Crabb, John Moser, Keith Gunther and Duane Dennis. In past years, Notre Dame had just about dominated the Arrow- head League, and had made the CIF Playoffs a way of life. How- ever, when this year's post -season competition came around, the Titans found themselves on the outside looking in, after a disap- pointing 4th place AL finish at 7-7, and an overall mark of 8-14. -f Notre Dame got off to a good start in their opener, blasting - Beaumont in their own gym, but then went on to lose seven straight Ti: A V'.' ' non-league games, and the AL opener to Aquinas. ' 7 - ' Notre Dame lost three games in the first round, to Aquinas, San Dimas and Big Bear. They opened up the second round with another loss to Aquinas, the low point of which was a first quarter in which they were outgunned, 21-2. They came back home for a three game homestand, and swept all of second place San Dimas, a win that knocked the Saints out of contention for first place. However, they lost their final three games, and were knocked out of the running themselves for a playoff berth. VARSITY BASKETBALL SCORES three to keep their playoff hopes alive. WRESTLING Plagued by injuries and lack of experience, the Titan wrestling squad suffered a dismal season with a 3-8 re- cord. Captain Duane Dennis and co-captain Mike T Tardiff proved to be the most successful wrestlers placing in both the Fontana Takedown and Riverside City Tournaments. Other fine wrestlers included David Langan at 115 lbs., Arnold Loera at 98 lbs. and Vince Scarpino at 130 lbs. Steve Aloia, the first year coach, worked very hard during the entire season teaching his young team the many techniques of this sport. The Titans had a successful weekend on the field, sweeping the series with scores of 4-2 and 10-0. But, as you can tell from the following pictures, the Titans enjoyed themselves off the field as well. The weather was beautiful, the accommodations were fine, and the natives were friendly, all of which added up to a great road trip for Notre Dame's Cham- pions. I. F. S,S. Championship and finishing with a record of 21-7. A rookie coach QMike Barnesy and a team with only two senior starters QMarvi.n Cobb and Grant Evensonj didn't figure to attract too much attention, but as the season progressed, the Titans made believers out of everybody they faced, winning 19 of their last 22 games. The junior studded Titans were paced by the spectacular hurling of ace Iefthander Larry Turner, the big bats of Marvin Cobb, Bob Lyons, and John Darsow, and the fine clutch performances of Dave Eiser, Lou Santilla, George Schulte, Mike Cobb and Daron Smith. N.D. , overshadowed in print during the season by the record breaking exploits of Norte Vista's Braves, were out to prove something to a few people. Prove something they did, as they swept through the Arrowhead League with a 12-2 record, then took four straight games in the C,I. F. Playoffs to bring the school its second C.I. F. Championship in the same school year. The squad was coached by Steve Harris, who hoped to lead the Titans to another Arrowhead crown. 5.4: :f-3? GOLF The 1972 Notre Dame Golf Team should be one of the finest the school has ever fielded. Returning starters from last year's squad include 4fNumber-one man Tom Telliard, Mark Herzog, Chuck Culbertson and Dave Boldt. The A.S.B.'s feelings about the matter cen- tered on improving the relationship between both schools. As a result, the A,S.B, found it necessary to extend its social activities. Dances were our first issues of improve- ment. Realizing that past dances were that of mediocrisy, the student council felt opti- mistic that the student bodies of both schools would participate if we made our dances more exciting. By contracting the best bands around, every dance was a great suc- cess, so much so, that other schools in the area have conceded that ours are the best around. Among our many success stories were the Homecoming Activites and the Christmas Ball, both setting school records in their participation. Our master-plan did not stop at dances, but continued on to other co-ed activities. Our first event was an assembly featuring George Sharp a well-known hypnotist In Ralph de la Cruz selling cookies during an A,S,B, fund raising campaign 9 c February Notre Dame had its first annual Fun Week. This featured a week of contests and prizes, and as a finale both schools were shown a motion picture at a nearby theatre. Also in February both schools participated in Volleyball competition.
