'SSE' x m N TI-IER CGVAS During the past six years he has been at Notre Dame, Father Peter Covas has spent countless hours in hard work, all for the betterment of the school. These past six years have seen Notre Dame make great strides in both academ- ics and athletics. Among the challenges he has faced have been two accredita- tions and our recent budget problems. The very fact that Notre Dame will be open for the 1970-71 school year we owe to Father Covas' diligence in fund raising. Father Covas' six years as principal have seen many welcome additions to Notre Dame. There has been a great increase in size, necessitating the acquisition of a new building. Under his guidance we have acquired a closed- circuit television system which is now the pride of our school, and a showcase for the entire diocese as well as the public-school system of Riverside. But paramount to all this is Father Covas' contribution to the attitudes of his sudents. Having a true Christian gentleman to look up to has undoubtedly made the students of Notre Dame much more Christian in their outlook. If each graduating class during the last six years has emerged from Notre Dame better men than when they entered, the credit is due to Father Covas. Now on the eve of his departure from Notre Dame, to assume the role of parish pastor, it is a fitting time to look back upon his tremendous contribu- tions of time and effort to all of us. and bid him a fond farewell. 7 . -, W l ,,.., - ' H., -it 'l ei V J illjjlljkjkii' f ' ' ii.. Father Duffy has been the number two man at Notre Dame for six years. But instead of just trying harder, as vice principal Father Duffy has worked harder. Besides teaching English to sophomores and juniors, Father Duffy has worked as a counselor, dis- ciplinarian, checked the attendance slips for truants, coordinated finances on school projects, and still managed to put on the highly successful musical Carousel ' Father Duffy is respected and admired by the students of Notre Dame for his excellent blend of regulated discipline and gentle understanding. We hope that he is around to instill educational and christian qualities in the minds of Notre Dame students for years to come. 8 N, f 'S MRS. RYAN ii E 5-,1:::: ' 1221'- f?2555'W2:.!'! 1.1 mf. The reason for this observation by the WASC ts to establish the alms, objectives and successiulness of the Notre Dame l-llgh School program, the satisfactory result being anac- credltatlon. This accredltatlon ls a very prized and prestigious award. The accreditation usually lasts a period oi five years, although accredihons of one year are given to schools who are not Iully up to the standards set by the WASC, Graduating seniors reap the rewards of this ac- creditation. The Admission Dl- rectors at various colleges not only check into the students aca- demic record, but also take into consideration the type otaccred- ltation that has been issued tothe school. ln order to recelve a lull accreditation, the school under evaluation must otier a well- balanced program. The WASC takes many different aspects into consideration. The committee WASC spends ap- three days viewing functions and acti- sent by the proximately the various vitles of the school. Among the items to be considered are the library, the amount, type and quality or the books and the stu- dent- teacher ratio. The com- mittee carefully checks the qualifications of the teachers I.n the school, and also observes the efforts made by the adminis- tration to e s tab lls h communi- cation between ltself and the parents of the students. The progress which a school has made since its last accred- ltatlon ls another important item. This progress ls proven by the addition of elective pro- grams, new teaching methodoloy, and other increased studentbene- tits. However, in keeping with the plan to evaluate the whole school, the WASC committee also examines the athletic records the school has obtained. Notre Dame was last accredited ln 1965, and the five year accred- itation that it received expires ln June. The committee presently ,Q SEVERAL members ofthe Accreditation committee. evaluating the school is todeclde whether or not another accred- itation is in order. Notre Dame, with the progress it has enjoyed over the past ln academics, ath- letics and other school functions ls ln no danger ot losing its accreditation. Notre Dame has well lived up to its title as a college preparatory school, since 90711 of its graduates go on to college: 4'7'Z, to junior collegesg 4395 to four year colleges. In the past tive years, Notre Dame has introduced to its program new teaching methodology, lncludlng closed clrcult televlslon, also driver education, computer scl- ence, and extexwlve language learning equipment.
