Unity During the past four years we, the class of 1971, have come to understand the real meaning of the word unity: a state of one- ness. We have achieved a sense of unity that has deeply touched each one of us. It is for this reason that we have chosen the flame, a symbol of lasting unity, for this book. We have come to realize the importance of unity in this trou- bled world of which we are heirs. We must now attempt to con- vey our feelings to modern society, a society that has become impersonal and materialistic. It we wish to change society and to achieve fully the state of oneness so necessary in these trou- bled times, we must first break down the barriers people have built up among themselves. The most effective weapon availa- ble to us is simply understanding, an understanding based on the light of knowledge and compassion. As soon as man shows true understanding to his fellow man, all men will become one. Through the achievement of unity, the plight of the poor will be alleviated, peace and justice will reign in the hearts of men, and war will be made obsolete. “In the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

Dedication We, the Class of 71, dedicate our yearbook, Stella Maris, to Sister Beatrice Gerard, Subs. Sister Beatrice has been our homeroom teacher for two consecutive years. During this time, we have all felt the deep interest and concern she has for each one of us. Sister has always been genuinely interested in the happiness and welfare of each student with whom she has come into contact. She is an excellent teacher; the students who have benefitted from her instruction are well prepared for future careers in the business world. We seniors, therefore, have chosen to dedicate this yearbook to her as a means of expressing our thanks. When we think back on our years at Notre Dame, we will always remember Sister Beatrice Gerard and all that she has done for us.
