At last we were part of the high school student body and we felt ever so much older than we had the previous year. During the first week of school, the very thought of Initiation tormented us, This event, which we so dreaded, however, was nothing but a lotoffunand merriment. It was then time for us to set- tle down to hard workand stu- dy in order to make our tea- chers proud ofstheir .lowly freshies. ' Much funand many activities accompanied our first year of high, such as tennis for the sports-minded, outings and dances for the socially-in- clined, and Hallowe'en and Christmas parties, which were indeed enjoyed by all. The end of a happy and suc- cessful year having arrived, we participated in Class Night for the departing seniors and CLASS HISTORY we also had the privilege of being honor guards at the Com-= mencement Exercises. As we watched the jubilant seniors descend the stairs to receive theirdiplomas and awards, we felt very happy for them and resolved to put more study and spirit in our remaining years at Our Lady of Pity, and we sin-= cerely hoped they would be as memorable as our freshman year had been. 5 ae i Sly aie Rr = SOPHOMORE YEAR Coming to school in '54 ! found usa bit reluctant to close the door onour summer activi- ties and once more settle down toa steady schedule. We were, however, kept busy not only in furthering our academic ad- vancement but also in trying to become known as ''sophis- ticated sophomores, ! We soon had the opportunity of sponsoring our firstdance, Now excited and eager we all were! Happily, our first social event proved a success and at last we were recognized by the upperclassmen. This spirit urgedus to take active partici- pation in all school functions, and in so doing, we increased in our affection for our Alma Mater. The Christmas Holidays sped by and soon after it was our turn to be in the limelight, Since the Valentine Party was an annual event conducted by the sophomore class, we spent many enjoyable hours preparing for this big day decorating hearts and rehearsing skits. The result was another big suc- cess and a delighted group of sophomores. The end of the school term had come and it was now time for diplomas. Once again we proudly formed the honor guard as we had as freshmen, This time it seemed even more mo- mentous, for we realized that there were now two memora- ble years behind us, and that we had reached the mid-way mark in our secondary educa- tion, JUNIOR YEAR At last we were now upper- classmen and with this title came asense of responsibility and a feeling of maturity, for we were now setting an exam- ae oo a ae... ae ple to be followed. The first extracurricular activity on our agenda was our trip to the House of the Seven Gables. Following our tour ofthis his- torical house, we, together with the seniors, departed for Salem Willows, the chosen spot forour picnic. This event proved to bea wonderful com- bination of an educational and pleasure excursion, It was during our junior year that we were introduced to our beloved Father Dumond. With him we attended the Ice Ca- pades, participated in roller- skating and ice-skating parties, and at the end of the year the whole student body went ona never-to-be- forgotten outing to Canobie Lake. Mik pitiereé? A night to remember was the Midwinter Semi-Formal, ' It was the first occasion we would see eachotherin formalattire and it was our first thought that next year we would be the out- going class and sponsors of this event. Came spring and our minds turned to the highlight of our junior year, the Prom. How wonderful!!! How beautiful!!! How delightful and distin- guished an evening!!! Class Night, the climax of Our social calendar, soon ar- rived. We planned this event to express our attachmentand affection for the seniors. The decorations, the songs and the Goemve © mS tee . ee farewell address were our way of saying, Good luck and God bless you. Weeks flew by as we watched the seniors rehearsing their graduation exercises and for the last time we solemnly formed their honor guard. SENIOR YEAR With the resplendent autumn came the opening of school and the zenith of our days at Our Lady of Pity High--our senior year. One by one we planned with anticipation the many ac- tivities scheduled for us - The Freshman [nitiation, our First Senior Dance, the First Alumni Dance, and many others. The class of '57 will long cherish the work it did and the help it received on the Stella Maris, and our participation in the religious, scholastic, and so- clalvactivi tieseol atheshign school. Foremost among the reli-= gious events was the annual closed retreat, Forthreedays under the instruction and guid- ance of Rey.Gregory Roy,S.J., we f ormedamore solemn view of life, and visualized our true goal and destiny and the means to attain it. Now ém ber bro yntetne opening of the Chocolate Drive in orderto raise funds to equip our laboratory, and as usual, it was a huge success due to the splendid co-operation of the whole student body. Early in the month we received our class rings, and shortly after we cluttered the lunchroom ta- bles with the proofs of our class pictures. As the holidays were drawing close, we sponsored the Christ- mas Party whichis always a happy and joyous occasion at Our Lady. Surprise was the key element of this event com- plete with our very own Santa Claus, Alice Audet, and Mrs. Claus, Carol Doyle. With the opening of the new year came the ''Midwinter Semi-Formal' and a renewed interest in sports, tnoesr Father Dumond's direction a basketball team as well asa cheerleading team were organ- ized, Under his supervision also, we were officially en- rolled in. the:C. Y Ove tts membership brought with it a realization of the spiritual responsibilities with which we would soon be faced, and it al- so gave us the opportunity to participate in many social af- fairs. One of the most exciting and memorable of these social ac- tivities was our participation inthe First Archdiocesan Con- gress of the Councils of Catho- lic Youth which was held Janu- ary 19-20 atthe Hotel Bradford in Boston. This two day affair was a combination of spiritual and socialactivity all with the purpose of ‘stressing Ri atas Responsibility. LY On March 8 we sent Pauline Hamel, as our Representative to the State House for Student Government Day. This was an annual event when t e youthof Massachusetts 'took over their State Government. Tous, it was another means of proving good Catholics should be good citizens. Shortly after this, we took part ina student excursion to the UN. On March 15 we left for New York to attend the con- ferences and later in the day to assist at a wonderful pro- gram at Radio City Music Hall. Our senior year also brought tous anew religioninstructor, Father Boissonneault, whose religion classes were conduc- ted insucha way asto prepare - us for the conflicts and prob- lems ahead. As the months rolled by and the days too speedily drew to a close, we began to look for- WatG eLOmt nes Senior-Junior Prom. Our happy hearts saw these golden hours soon fade away into memories. These same happy hearts were some- what saddened a few weeks later when we were the guests of honor at Class Night. It seemed incredible that we had already reached the endof our happy high school days as lea- ders of our beloved Alma Mater. Tehus , w haves we, s.caate seniors, whoare onthe thresh- hold of graduation seen these past four years become only memories. May we always be a credit to our priests and sisters, andas we utter words of farewell, so weutter words of thanks for our splendid Catho- lic education and training re- ceived within the hallowed halls of Qur Lady of Pity High School.
