Reading is the medium through which ideas and i} knowledge are acquired by the reader at the expense of a predecessor,.Reading is the most expedient means of trans- ferring knowledge that man has been able to devise. It enables one to become readily familiar with theories, facts, and general information which entailed hours of thought, observation, and experimentation until feasible conclusions could be logically arrived at. The formation of good reading habits is indispensable to the complete maturity of the mind. The habit of regular reading should begin during the impressionable age. People are more subject to sugsestion and imitation from infancy until the age often years than at any other period of their life. It follows, therefore, that an influence should be exerted upon such children to acquire the habit of reading good books, Books have two ramifications, namely, fiction and non fiction. Non-fiction should unquestionably supersede fiction in importance. In non-fiction, the reader will get an added dividend on his time investment; his book is true. A person who reads fiction should be aware that in this field a steady diet of pulp stories is hardly cal- culated to develop a high form of appreciation or true reading intelligence. Inasmuch as reading has a decided influence upon a reader, it should be borne in mind that not all books are good and that one should exercise care in selecting a book for reading. Father Harold Gardiner,S.J. gives his evaluation ofa good book as follows: The job of literature is to enrich human lives. It must broaden in readers the virtues of faith, hope and charity. The final and inescapable test of a book that claims to be a work of literature is: Does it make richer my love of God and my fellow man? The benefits derived from good books serve to enrich one with a wealth of information, which, when properly evaluated gives one a more complete understanding of the purpose of life. Good books radiate knowledze and Knowledge is Power , It is obvious, therefore, that it is extremely m advantageous for people to cultivate the habit of reading m® reliable and informative books. As so much of our A ) Catholic life depends on the ideals that inspire it, our i+} reading should help us to become perfect Christians, true “ ! and finished persons of character.
