Here at Notre Dome, the pattern takes on vivid reality, for it is centered in the figure of Christ. lt is the reality of Christ's hands shaping and planing rough boards under the guidance of St. Joseph in a carpenter's shop at Nazareth, it is the reality of Christ's 'human intellect and imagination experiencing the fullness of human existence, it is the reality of Christ's humility and love in submitting Himself to the instruction of Mary and Joseph that gives meaning and sig- nificance to the Catholic formative education at Notre Dame. 1 C 1 ,, Faculty and students 4 mul-W N- - - 'M 1 , NIL, ' . fx czw ffiik Q ts... In the following four years the pattern of our lives at Notre Dame has proved to be different and personal for each of us in the class of '60, but somehow they all combine in the fabric of the larger Christ-pattern that unites all of us. Now for the last time we savor the experience of Notre Dame. We stand again before the school buildings high on the hilltop, with the city spread out below us, gleaming in the sunshine. We pause again to pray silently before Our Lady's statue, fronting the school building with quiet dignity. Again we enter the corridors where so often we have been swept along by iostling crowds of students rushing to get to class on time. Again we pass the familiar office and pause to watch the lines of students waiting for their slips . We walk by the classrooms and hear again the voices of the Brothers and laymen at their task of instruction. Now we pass through the cafeteria to experience again the noise and bustle of a busy lunch period. We pass the gym where the gleaming floors evoke the memory of the thump of basketballs, the cheering of the crowds, the lilting music of the Spring Concert and the dances. And now we are outside again, passing the football gridiron to watch our athletes going through their paces, and as we leave Notre Dame, we pause for a last quiet prayer before Our Lady, where we have prayed so many times before. But this time it is different, now for the first time perhaps, we are aware of how precious these days at Notre Dame have been. But Notre Dame will always be with us, not only in memories but in reality, forming an integral part of our lives. The principles we have learned, the experiences we have had, the inspiration we have received can never be lost and will serve as the founda- tion for a life centered in Christ. Christ said, I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly. Now, as we recross the drawbridge to confront the pathways of life, we are confident that our lives as men of Notre Dame will be, as Christ promised, abundant and rich in His blessings. l 11 lOUIS ABBAGNARO ou 155 Chapel Street New Haven tee 4 Dancing Knights 4 Sc: ence Club 14 Science Ex ibut C S C S Honor Society 3 Honor Mono gram 2 3 Herald Staff 4 DAVID ANDERSON Dave 10 Butler Road North Haven Rifle Team 4 Dance Committee 5- IN. 3 ...lg 1 J FRANK ANTOLLI N0 HF A H 75 Horsley Avenue, New Haven Intramurals 1 3, Herald Stat? 4 Science Club 3 4 Science Ex hubit 4, Shield Sta5 4 ,or FRANK ADAMS Hank 1651 State Street New Haven Shield Staff 4 Shield Adman 4 .1 11 GEORGE ANDERSON Jerry 99 Colonial Drive Hamden Bowling 14 Intramurals 2 4 Glee Club 2 3 Dance Commit tee 4 Dancing Knights 3 4 Science Club 2 3 CSMC 4 Science Exhibit 4 Shield Ad man 4 GEORGE ANTONIO George 260 Hamilton St New Haven Bowling 2, Intramurals 2, Glee Club 34 Dance Committee 3, Shield Adman 4 inn- ANDREW O An y Totoket Road Northfard 4 Dancing Knights 4 Science Club 3 4 C S M C 3 4 Science Exhibit 3 4 Shield Adman 4 ? -s. And those cocky Sophomores - don'f they bring back memories of our wonderful second year when, chests swelling with our own importance, we swaggered by the poor Freshmen but still secretly trembled before the awesome Upperclassmen? And the quiet poise and confidence ofthe Juniors as they plug away at their books and hopefully prepare for their own Senior year were ours just yesterday, it seems. When did we really become a part of Notre Dame, we ask. Probably on the tirst day we climbed the hill as Freshmen, and the spirit of Notre Dame iust grew quietly and gradually in us as we see it growing now in all the Underclassmen. Soon they will share with us the joy of looking back on four years rich with experi- ence and ahead to the new adventure of life. Row T, L-R. A. Cesnavicius, J. Hekeler, A, Giordino, M, Miscio, E. Through His presence at this joyful celebration and His gracious act of changing water to wine, Christ not only gave His blessing to human pleasures and compan- ionship, but even shared in them Himself. Thus the Christ-pattern extends itself from the field of study to all forms of social activity. Here at Notre Dame numerous clubs, commit- tees, and publications cultivate all the talents a student possesses, providing a proving ground for mature thought and sound judgment. These are supplemented by the dances and other social functions which provide relief from regi- mented study and instill the ioy of contact with others. 5522 2 EM. viii Y- Lf 9 ? : QMS? v., 'Q . z LJ, F. aff vga . 9 sri '-agp 1 ef, M 159 6 n ..., .., Activities 1 , ORGANIZATIONS .K t My ,QP 5 3 4 ,. if ,K A J ,Qui ' x - A -Q- f A .2 4 f f A 55,54 L, Y, ' rf 'Wa a t JZ'- 'sif 5 v nf' is K . To those untamiliar with it, the Y.C.S. is only an extra 'Q' curricular activity, but to its members it is a way ot lite. lt is a complement to the Notre Dame Code, yet it goes beyond that, for it expounds the lite ot Christ, distilling from His teachings the thought Be ye perfect as your Heavenly Father is pertectf This is its primal action, but its members consider it ot equal importance to build others into perfection because the l Y.C.S. is an organization operated on the motive ot Christian Charity. It is an organization devoted to helping otlrers to under- stand the true meaning ot Christian Charity. It has also 'fi fs 3 .- , .r ao ,-.--..,..,.q,f 'Q . The 6,000 people who crowded the auditorium were treated to a musical extrava- ganza of Broadway quality. The entire show was under the supervision of Brother Pierre Schu, C.S.C., with Joe Hayes doing the choreography. The Royal Knights Swing Band displayed their versatility by playing such numbers as The Sheik of Araby and Jungle Drums. The Glee Club sang the ever popular Arrevaderci Roma. The finale turned out a masterpiece of imagination and co-ordination saluting the various countries of the world in The United Nations Ball. The second half of the show, as always, featured the Concert Band under the direction of Brother Pierre. They played numbers ranging from Blue Tango to Finale to the New World Sym- phony. Brother John Neidl, C.S.C., who was in charge of the Marching Band in the first half of the year, directed the band in Bugler's Holiday. The finale combined the voices ofthe Sacred Heart Chorus and the Singing Knights along with the Concert Band in a tribute to the Armed Forces of America, 1 P T x I,-Jai' .JQI17 X 1 -Y - g 0 Q Y la El X001 fl-if P X ni iwf 5 as Z' Wgenls usmwmu 49 ft Qfggfivdf Sim RM' zztiaiei , ORXUM DAME moe SCHOOL WDW NOTR5 72 l Opening to the Strains of Beautiful Ohio. .D- ,, '- V-. The crisp coolness ot the eveningg the smooth, scintillating music ot Eddie Wittstein's or- chestrag the whirl of gowns and gleam ot white dinner jacketsg the gentle laughter and radiant smiles of our datesg the lavish decorations that surrounded us with a kaleidoscope of glittering Harlequin tiguresg all of these blended together to make the evening unforgettable. il . Hardened by the elements, living a life close to nature, strong mentally and physically, Simon and Andrew had been moulded into men capable of facing any danger in spreading Christ's teaching, it was the physical occupation of fishing that made it possible for them to become spiritual fishers of men. Here Christ has beautifully and simply shown that the physical and the spiritual blend into one to perfect a human being. The Notre Dame student is aware of this profound truth, and follows the Christ-pattern not only in studies and social activities but also on the athletic field, conscious that physical exercise can also strengthen him spiritually and morally. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Not to be outdone by their varsity brothers, the Notre Dame Junior Varsity basketball team, coached by Ray Tellier, amassed the greatest Junior Varsity record in the history of the school. The varsity underlings won every game on their schedule except one to Wilbur Cross in the New Haven Arena and came right back two weeks later to avenge that loss when they won over the Governors handily by 62-56 score. The boys made this great record and sure to be ND stars in the future were Larry Wrzosek, Walter Lee, Ralph Santillo, Joe Hefternan, Jim Perillo, Leighton Longhi, Joe Tonelli, Bob Evasick, Bill Barbieri, and Carl Jenkins. FRESHMEN BASKETBALL The ND frosh, coached by Ray Tellier and captained by Bill Barbieri, were not to be outdone in the matter of victories and went undefeated in freshmen compe- tition for the second straight year. Players are: Howie Gable, Ed Schreck, Bill Hayes, Steve Campano, Al Kenney, Joe Morrissey, Howie Wrzosek, Joe Lenzi, Bob Bowe, John Nizen, Dave Sidor, Vinny Avallone, Bob Zirlis, Bob Fabrii, and Bill Barbieri. GOLF To add lustre to Notre Dame's Golden Year of sports, the golf team led by Captain Mike Sulli- van and coached by Brother James Nilan, C.S.C., won the District League Title. They, too, con- tributed an award for our trophy case in the main corridor. Although they entered the race as underdogs, the team led by John Haulihan, Joe McAndrew, and Rich Ferrucci proved their skill by defeating Hamden in the playoffs, to bring home the first District Championship in our golf history. The pin topplers get started in the fall of the year and continue into the spring with 42 matches in the schedule. The green and gold have always enioyed top or close to the top ranking in the District League which is made up of Cross, Hillhouse, Eli Whitney, Hamden, Amity, North Haven, and St. Mary's. At this report our bowlers are one game off the pace with a 16-'lfl record iust behind front running Amity High School. Captain Jerry Anderson leads our men each Wednesday at the Y.M.C.A. alleys against our district rivals where competition is keen and the scores very close. Captain Anderson with an average of 'IO4 is high man for Notre Dame with Frank Esposito a close second. This year is completed in fine style with a banquet and in- dividual trophies for the team champions and singles champions. Another strike for Anderson If I QF ,K Wil -8 i T' H, A , l ,,-- X Father C SENIOR RETREAT Probably the most important and rewarding days for the Notre Dame Senior are those spent at Retreat. This year many of us traveled to the St. Joseph's Retreat House at Valatie, New York, where the quiet, inspiring surroundings permitted us to turn away for a while from hectic secular pursuits to things of the spirit. Under the guidance of Father Gerald Conmy, C.S.C., the con- ferences, spiritual reading, assistance at Mass and reception of Holy Communion all helped to strengthen us spiritually. We came back to Notre Dame stronger Knights of Our Lady, better pre- pared to complete our last year of high school. Partaking of the Spiritual Bread. onmy 4 i . delivers inspiring conferences. But it would be closer to the truth to say that they are really a preparation for the happiest yearsg it is the gradual development from awkward Freshmen to mature Seniors under the guidance of Notre Dame that has given us the confidence to face an exciting and promising future. It is now, at graduation, when past and future mingle, that we are conscious of all that we owe Notre Dame. May this book be a reminder in the future of all the experi- ences of our high school careers. Father McCaffrey addresses the graduating class.
