Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the fun we had, and the friends we made. It is the hope of the 1957 Shield Staff that, as you glance through this book in the years to come, you will recapture those moments . . . and the echoes will begin again. .J 4 'F 2' The distance from the Freshman homeroom to the Senior homeroom is but a few steps. For the Freshman . . . it takes four long years . . . For the Seniors . . . four short years. The living . . . the laughing . . . the praying together is a lesson learned more easily by some than by others . . . but to all a lesson of distinctive quality. mi f'N His Excellency The Most Reverend HENRY JOSEPH O'BRIEN, D.D Archbishop of Hartford I His Excellency The Most Reverend JOHN F. S A BROTHER EPHREM O'DWYER, c.s.c. PROVINCIAL DEDICATION A school belongs to many people, and many people belong to her. It is so with Notre Dame. The graduates of Notre Dame have formed a new relationship, a relationship as strong almost as any other in their lives. So it is with us: we belong to Notre Dame, and Notre Dame belongs to us. If there is a one-man to whom we can show our appreciation for what we hold dear, it is Brother Ephrem O'Dwyer, c.s.c., who is primarily responsible for the building of our school in West Haven by the Brothers of Holy Cross. ll K X. That Notre Dame played topflight competition is witnessed by the fact that every one of the eight Class A ball clubs they faced, with the exception of one, entered the CIAC tournament, an honor extended only to the top six- teen quintets in the state. Coach Paul Sapko, in his initial year at the helm of the varsity combine, depended chiefly upon sophomore Nick Brunetti for the Knights' scoring punch. Brunetti hit on 30 per cent of his field goal attempts. Dave Doyle, playing the outsideg Dave's smooth ball handling and sure passing help to keep Notre Dame's opponents off balance. Brian Crouse, center. He not only displays a soft push shot from the side, but his ability to leap high into the air to grab rebounds and to block shots have proved a great help to the team. Both men are seniors. Peter Barbarito 20 4 'm'N e'm1 W ' 'W' 'H . .l Ray Ciarleglio Nick Gerry Moran is the highest-scoring senior on this year's squad. The majority of his points have come on long, swish- ing set shots from the outside. His tricky drive has also been a valuable aid to the Knights. as , l xii -'fitdx .si ' t'Q ' Q' ' i iiii is ' -v iz . . . .f x I K .- .,,. ,, 1 4 C 1 Brian O'Connor VARSITY -P Mike Medley, although 5'l0 , gets a spring into his jumps that enable him to out-rebound many taller men. The Friars, noted for their spirit and fight, simply could not equal the victors in either respect as they folded before a ND second-half onslaught. The visitors jumped to an early lead at the outset of the contest and at one point during the second canto led by as much as ten markers. Hungry for a win, the ND uintet refused to quit as they outscored their opponents For the remainder of the half. Down 25 to 19 going into the third stanza, the home squad racked up six straight points to tie it up at 25 apiece. Behind the rebounding of Brian Crouse and the driving lay-ups of Nick Brunetti the Knights gained the advantage, and continued to out-score the bewildered losers. The score sheet gave Brunetti 19 points and Gerry Moran 10 for the evening's game. Senior Gerry Dinnen, playing by far his best game of the year with 16 rebounds and 8 points, led ND to its first District League win against West Haven. Nick Brunetti and Ray Ciarleglio were the big point produc- ers for the Knights with 14 and 10 markers respectively. The initial stanza was slow. With Brunetti leading the way, however, ND surged ahead to a 18-8 margin at intermission. By the third quarter the Knights had a 16 point lead. The Blue Devils nnally found the range and began to threaten as the final buzzer sounded mak- ing it 42-38 in ND's favor. Brian Crouse leads the attack. Nick Brunetti, sophomore, scored 22 points. The Herald hit a new peak of popularity among the student body, combining the usual reporting of school events with such features of Brother Cyrinus, c.s.c., as Student Polls, Television and Movie Reviews, and a record column. The teacher, by himself, cannot achieve the desired result any more than water, by itself, can produce beautiful flowers. There must be good soil, sunlight and fresh air as well. The good soil, in our case, is the pupilg the sunlight is the grace of God and the fresh air is the prayers and good example of the Faithful. V As L 5 . Neither of our shows, the Christmas Show or the Spring Festi- val could have been accom lished were it not for the work of the Crew. The Band and the Glee Cljub are the ones we usually think of when it is time for praising the success of the shows, yet the Stage Crew, working without our notice and acclaim, certainly does its part thoroughly and efficiently. ww Nancy, Secretary ' fm ,M - ' l 4 , ff 4. 1 c l Q sw, .6 -I . Criticism and reaction of modern teens are so brutally yet disarmingly frank, there's no teaching that will keep one more humble than the teaching of youth. But their appre- ciation is so very sincere and their praise so devoid of adult flattery -that, when it does come . . . spontaneous, unrehearsed, uncalculating . . . it is one of the deepest human joys of the Brotherhood. And because their potential- ities for good or evil are so terrific, because the stakes are so high in terms of eternity, there's no type of work more suited to draw a Brother closer to God, make him so com- pletely dependent on divine assistance and thus deepen the roots of his own spiritual life than working with and for today's teen-agers. You had better live your best and think your best todayg for today is sure preparation for tomorrow and all other tomorrows that follow. The C.S.M.C. has made it possible for its members and all the students of Notre Dame to help the poor and the needy ot' the far off mission lands as well as the needy here in our own states. The perpetual prayers of the students in the Shrine off the Library is what makes the C.S.M.C. and its activities flourish each and every year. The activities such as the clothing drive, the canned food drive, the Christmas Ball which is one of the biggest dances of the school, the candy counter in the Cafeteria, the Mite box drive, all these activities are done for the Holy Cross Mis- sionaries. All of our activities are guided by our Moderator Brother Theodore, c.s.c., and our officers President W. Con- siglio, Vice President J. Haggerty, Secretary R. Antonetti, Treasurer E. Ciarlo, and Administrative Assistant D. Han- ley. This year has been a very fruitful one for the C.S.M.C. THE C.S.M.C. RELIGION TEACHERS The C.S.M.C. has a group of fellows who with the guid- ing hands of the Sisters, The Parish Visitors of Mary Im- maculate from Saint Paul's Church try their best to teach the Catholic children in the public schools the Catholic Religion so that they may get to know God better. This year has as always been very successful and we want to take this time to thank the Brothers for the work they have done, our Moderator Brother Theodore, C.S.C., and of course the good Sisters of Saint Paul's, and Mike Roper for their support in this activity. si-Q Q92 3 elim Q If wi Alma and Mother at Brother's House Mr. Cavanuagh WILL IT WORK? The spirit of faith in- duces a Brother to see God in all things and above all to sanctify himself. The spirit of zeal attracts him towards children, to instruct them in the truths of religion and to penetrate their hearts with the teachings of the Gospels. Because of the Brothers' vigilance and guidance surely we ourselves are more perfect, striving to imitate our teachers in the world of tomorrow. towards all . . . C.S.M.C. 1 . . .
