In the fall of that same year three Brothers were assigned to this new post: Brother John Baptist, C.S.C. was appointed principal of the new school which was to be called Notre Dame, and Brothers Noel and Eldred came as his as- sistants. These three took up residence in the quarters of the former dance hall and taught classes there as well. In this year, Notre Dame had an enrollment of 120 boys. It was soon evident that the school had to expand. Therefore, construction was begun in 1947 on the new school building on a higher level of the hill which the first building occu- pied. i lf sl' DAME HIGH SCHOOL Two years later, in 1948, the present school was formally dedicated by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Henry J. O'Brien, then Bishop of Hartford. The faculty was enlarged consider- ably and the enrollment stood at 375. These were the beginnings . . . Each student who has come to Notre Dame probably remembers many particular events which mean Notre Dame to him, all probably remember certain highlights which mean'Notre Dame to all: Athletically, it is probably Coach janenda's state championship football team of 1954 - though nothing could be more satisfying than the victory of the Hamden game this year. Musically it is the band organized by Brother Eldred, now highlighted by the Spring Festival under the direction of Brother Pierre. All re- member the principals, Brother Donatus and Brother Pacificus who succeeded Brother John Baptist, and all remember the teachers who have been the life of the spirit of Notre Dame. There are the retreats - the perpetual rosary - the lunch time rosary in May and October - the religious bulletin, The Squire, the dances, the clubs and the detentions, the magazine drives, the fire in the old pavilion and what came of it - the service building, the gift of the senior classes, the field in front of the school, the new gym, the growth in numbers - over 700 now, but there was, is now and probably always will be the thrill, the chill, of waking the echoes cheering her name - Notre Dame. Before each edition of the school paper became a reality, countless hours were spent in planning, in acquiring information, in writing and rewriting articles and in countless other little jobs. Under the guidance of Bro. Cyrinus each issue was a journalistic endeavor, comparable to any of the best! The staff of this anniversary issue of the Shield is well aware of the excellent calibre of the yearbooks of the preceding years and has endeavored to maintain that standard in this annual. May you find many happy memories of this year recorded for you within these pages and may it be a source of pleasant reminis- cences in the years to come. Piscitelli Andrew Reynolds Louis Romao William Soby Michael Sola Borden Steeves Lawrence Wilson Department Bro. Pierre, C.S.C. With the varied songs of the Glee Club, the lilting melodies of the Swing Band, the powerful renditions of the Varsity Band and the dancing of the Corettes of Sacred Heart Academy, the N.D. Music Department completed an- other successful year. The many hours of practice by the groups has resulted in the high caliber shows which have thrilled' audiences throughout the area. Evidence of this was displayed at the Christmas Assembly, which christened the new gym for both the student body and the Parents' Clubs of the school. The tintillating tintinnabu- lation echoed throughout the gym, leaving an impression of another great show. The Spring Festival is the biggest proj- ect undertaken by the Music Department. It features the Glee Club, the Royal Knights, the Corettes of Sacred Heart Academy and the Concert Band in a pro- gram of both Classic and Popular num-' bers and hilarious comedy. It is an event anticipated by the entire New Haven area. Mr. Joseph Hayes, well known New York choreographer, aids the department by adding his sparkling innuendoes in offer- ing bright precision dance routines and entertaining skits in appropriate settings created by the Art Department. It results in a production carefully and untiringly rehearsed and professionally given. Director of the Muric Department 63 7 U ,f. - f A , -L-S. f 3 5 3 5 I I as s Left to right, row 1: T. Bache, T. This becomes the third most successful season in the school's history. Although hampered by inexperience, they proved their mettle as the season progressed. Senior Bob O'Connell, selected as Player of the Area by the New Haven Gridiron Club, ended a brilliant high school career by scoring both touchdowns in the Green Bowl game against Hamden High. Seniors Jack Doyle, Mike Deskin, Dave Spillane, Tom Doyle, Fran Killoy, Bob Brady, and jim Geelan paced the janendamen to their six-straight victories. jack Doyle found his prime passing target in his brother, Tom, selected as Player of the Week by the New Haven Register. The juniors on the team, Braun, Toni, Sasso, Davidson, and Gilligang along with the sophomores, Wilson and Lynch, were contributors to the Knights closing victories. THE FOOTBALL TEAM-Row 1: D. Although losing three more than they won, the Hill- toppers outscored their opponents 1069 to 1057. They netted a total of 417 field goals and 235 charity tosses. Leading the Alling- town scoring parade for the year were the three seniors, Burly Bob O'Connell showed the way with 242 points on 79 Held goals and 84 free throws for a 13 point average. Lanky Len Ceruzzi was runnerup as this 6' 5 giant poured 175 points into the nets. He did this on 74 field goals and 27 charity tosses. Next came the Doyle brothers, jack and Tom respectively. john led the way with 169 points on 64 field goals and 41 free throws. Tom ripped the cords for 101 points on 45 field goals. Freshman Nick Brunetti, the fifth member of the starting five, was the only other Knight to crash the triple digit mark, as he scored 157 points on 69 field goals and 19 free throws and had the best shooting percentage of the club, as he connected on 65W of his shots. juniors Crescenzo, Moran, Doyle, Crouse, Dinnen, and Barbarito added much to the scoring effort, and will form the nucleus of next year's club. Starting out with a 48-45 win over Hop- kins, they knocked over the usually powerful West Haven five. Hillhouse handed us our first loss of the season, as J. Doyle paced the Knights with 14 points. The Alumni were our next victims as the Hilltoppers pulled a one point half-time deficit into a 70-55 win. The next three contests were lost to three area teams, Cross, Hamden and Fair- field Prep. Milford High was the next Knight victim, as they pulled a 71-50 upset victory over the West shore team. The janendamen dropped their next game in an upset victory by St. Mary's. Although we lost the next game to Hillhouse, it was no dis- grace as we led until the last period, and lost the game by only four points. The last game of the season ended in a thrilling re- venge victory over our perennial enemies, St. Mary's. 79 J JI 1 I ga M if XQ 2 ' 12 I f p JS PM HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 1956 Aw! Not quite high enough.
