COMMUNIUN HOLY MASS 38 CONFESSION Father Stanley Parry, C.S.C. Retreat Master 1949 Father Charles Harris, C.S.C. Retreat Master 1950 ANNUAL DE VOTI ONS Every year during the first three days of Holy Week, the regular routine of classes and activities is suspended to allow the students to make their annual retreat. A program of daily Mass, conferences, spiritual reading, special prayers, and Benediction is arranged to help focus growing hearts and minds to matters of the soul. As a further aid to devo- tion, silence is kept during all the exercises. On noon of the third day, Father Harris ended the retreat by bestowing the Papal Blessing. An annual novena for Purity consisting of daily Mass, Holy Communion and appropriate prayers is made during the nine days preceding the feast of the Immaculate Con- ception. Every Notre Dame Man is expected to practice a manly and lively devotion to Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Devotion to the Sacred Heart: Students attend Holy Mass and receive Communion on First Fridays in their parish churches. Devotion to the Blessed Virgin: During the month of May, the Daily Consecration to Mary and three Hail Marys are recited in all religion classes. During the month of October, the rosary is recited. Devotion to St. Joseph: Students are urged to make use of ejaculatory prayer as an invaluable aid to purity and humility. 39 X Students attend Mass during the Retreat NOTRE DAME MUSIC DEPARTMENT BAND OFFICERS Joseph Aloi i , ,.,, President David Parker. , . , Vice-president Alexander Ramadei . Librarian The Notre Dame Glee Club, ably directed and supervised by Brother Eldred, C.S.C., has played an important as well as a pleasant part in school activ- ities. This organization, now in its fourth year, made its first appearance on the eve- ning of December 2, 1947, at the meeting of the Mother's Club. Eighty-four members make up the club as pictured in this section. The second concert was held in May. Melodies in this program were, Palestrina's Gloria Patri, The Rosary, Notre Dame Oar Mother, and Set Down Servant, an arrange- ment by Fred Waring. The Notre Dame Band, also under the tutelage of Brother Eldred, has tried to fulfill the exalted mission of music to charm the fiercest grief and disarm the severest rage . Mr. Edward Clark, the Moderator, sug- gests a new subject for each meeting with different members of the organ- ization participating. This activity has proved a powerful and effective means of instilling self assurance in one's abilities necessary in business relations, in college and later life. In addition to the regular ora- torical activities in the English classes, all students are entered in the annual Public Speaking contests. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are held in class and the Hnals in each section are held in an assembly before a spe- cial board of judges. Awards are presented to the winners of each sec- tion. The winners of the contests are awarded the Oratorical Medal at the annual Fathers'-Sons' Banquet. The words of Christ have beckoned us to acknowledge the plea of the missions from all parts of the world. UGO teach ye all nations the word of God . This Work has been undertaken by the Catholic Student Mission Crusade CC. S. M. CJ unit in our school. The purpose of the mission unit is threefold: 1. prayer, 2. study, 3. sacrifice. In its function of prayer its members pray for more vocations in the service of the missionsg for without prayer the help of God will be lacking. Study-By this activity, its members strive to attain the purpose of their studies by making use of their God given talents. Under the protective veil of the Blessed Virgin, Queen of the Missions, the C. S. M. C. member gives example to others and is not shy in the protection of his Faith and morals. Sacrifice is a must to the C. S, M. C. member for he realizes that one does not attain happiness or merit Without self-denial in little things. The motto of the C. S. M. C., The Sacred Heart for the World! the World for the Sacred Heart! is being carried out by accepting alms and distributing Catholic literature showing the need and the necessity of prayer and alms. These meritorious deeds are remembered in the prayers of the missioners and their charges. For what would it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? SHIELD It was a bright September day that Brother Cletus, C.S.C. called together an impromptu staf for the purpose of preparing the annual of the first graduating class of Notre Dame. Although having to set a prece- dent, near perfect cooperation from all in giving up the best part of their free hours settled most of the financial and technical problems by December. Without the fine cooperation of each and every member of the staff this book of memories would never have been completed. It is only just, however, that we credit the co-editors Philip Walker and James McKeown along with the individual staff editors for contributing so much time and work. Also We can not forget the generosity of all the advertisers and patrons. If this first issue of the Shield succeeds in keeping the class of 1950 together in spirit if' not in body, it will have served its purpose. The first home game proved rather disap- pointing as the Green and Gold lost to Ansonia 21-6. The Knights then traveled to Taunton, Massachusetts, to play Coyle High. The home team won by a 19-18 count. The Hilltoppers went down for the fourth time by a 33-6 count to Woodrow Wilson. Playing inspired football the Knights up- set highly touted West Haven by trouncing them 27-14, Fresh from this win a confident Notre Dame team ran roughshod over Sacred Heart by a 45-0 score. In their final game the Knights pounded out a 32-0 victory over St. Mary's to win the Catholic Championship for the second straight year. Rating highly among these elements is the athletic phase of our school life. There have been times when we hung our heads and uttered that oft used phrasefwait 'til next year, and there have been times when we joyously celebrated. For our victories we are grate- ful. For our losses, all we can think of is the chance to atone for our mistakes. One can not single out any particular factor on which athletic success is based. It is the combining of many things that makes a school justly proud of its athletic program. The band, the cheerleaders, the faithful student body, and the team itself. All make up that certain feeling which we like to call the spirit of Notre Dame. Win, lose or draw Notre Dame always fought to the final whistle and every opponent knew they were in a ball game. These are the things that make Notre Dame teams hard to beat. These are the things that every Notre Dame man will remember for years to come. Long after graduation day has passed we shall look back to our high school days and proudly say, I went to school at Notre Dame. 68 Dr. Lawrence Tierney Mlqg f !l71'.
