our lad of hope Ad Jesum per Mariam . . . Christ is the foundation of all hope, but through Mary, Christ comes to us, and We go to Him. All hope begins with Our Lady, hope for virtue, hope for strength, hope for the future. Because the necessity of hope is everlasting, the purpose of the 1962 Mater Dei is to emphasize and explain the importance of hope. Our Lady of Hope looks upon us knowingly with an ever-present smile of hope. With each cross we must bear in life, comes a ray of grace and hope. Our Mother of Hope is ever with us, lifting our spirits and comforting us, until at last we reach the end of 1ife's journey in the safe and loving harbor of paradise. The strong and confident walls of hope are built around a ship's anchor, representing life's heaviest burdens, and symbolized by the color of courage, green. Since the 1962 Mater Dei is an instrument of hope, it is also produced around an anchor and sprinkled with a ray of hope, green . . . 3

dedication W With pride and honor we, the 1962 graduates of Notre Dame High School, dedicate the Mater Dei to Monsignor David P. Herlihy. After serving Notre Dame successfully as principal for ten years, Monsignor was recently appointed pastor of Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Buffalo. While at Notre Dame Monsignor was an inspiration to all the students and a source of strength in their time of need. As principal he worked earnestly to further the educational interests and spiritual Welfare of each student. We the senior class truly have come to realize the great efforts of Monsignor on our behalf. We are grateful for his spirit and understanding through our confused freshman days, our maturing sophomore days and our happy junior days. The most impressive effect of Monsignor's work is the love and respect for Notre Dame High School which he planted and fostered in our hearts, a spirit unsurpassed and forever treasured. With a note of gratitude and with deep honor we have dedicated our yearbook to Monsignor Herlihy. May the Mother of God be with him always, and may his life be filled with the continued success and happiness which he brought to Notre Dame. - 2

All hope originates in youth, and therefore it is only fitting and proper that Notre Dame's football team should be outfitted in uniforms of green and white. Along with the fighting spirit of the team goes the spirit of Our Lady's school. This spirit is none other than one of confidence, trust and hope, not only in the team's ability, but rather in Our Lady's graciousness, which surely ac- counts for the school's sportsmanship attitude toward. sports, whether we win or lose. sophomores page 25 winter sports I0 20 30 40 50 4
