Herlihy. After serving Notre Dame successfully as principal for ten years, Monsignor was recently appointed pastor of Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Buffalo. While at Notre Dame Monsignor was an inspiration to all the students and a source of strength in their time of need. As principal he worked earnestly to further the educational interests and spiritual Welfare of each student. We the senior class truly have come to realize the great efforts of Monsignor on our behalf. We are grateful for his spirit and understanding through our confused freshman days, our maturing sophomore days and our happy junior days. The most impressive effect of Monsignor's work is the love and respect for Notre Dame High School which he planted and fostered in our hearts, a spirit unsurpassed and forever treasured. With a note of gratitude and with deep honor we have dedicated our yearbook to Monsignor Herlihy. May the Mother of God be with him always, and may his life be filled with the continued success and happiness which he brought to Notre Dame. - 2 our lad of hope Ad Jesum per Mariam . . . Christ is the foundation of all hope, but through Mary, Christ comes to us, and We go to Him. All hope begins with Our Lady, hope for virtue, hope for strength, hope for the future. Because the necessity of hope is everlasting, the purpose of the 1962 Mater Dei is to emphasize and explain the importance of hope. Our Lady of Hope looks upon us knowingly with an ever-present smile of hope. With each cross we must bear in life, comes a ray of grace and hope. Our Mother of Hope is ever with us, lifting our spirits and comforting us, until at last we reach the end of 1ife's journey in the safe and loving harbor of paradise. The strong and confident walls of hope are built around a ship's anchor, representing life's heaviest burdens, and symbolized by the color of courage, green. Since the 1962 Mater Dei is an instrument of hope, it is also produced around an anchor and sprinkled with a ray of hope, green . . . 3 table of contents sept. oct. nov. dec. jan. 1 administration page 7 freshmen page I3 ...... fall sports page I9 . . . All hope originates in youth, and therefore it is only fitting and proper that Notre Dame's football team should be outfitted in uniforms of green and white. Along with the fighting spirit of the team goes the spirit of Our Lady's school. This spirit is none other than one of confidence, trust and hope, not only in the team's ability, but rather in Our Lady's graciousness, which surely ac- counts for the school's sportsmanship attitude toward. sports, whether we win or lose. sophomores page 25 winter sports I0 20 30 40 50 4 feb. mar. apr. may june advertisements page 87 seniors page 67 spring sports page 63 student life page 57 page 3I organizations page 43 juniors page 3 7 I' Q X 121' -.A 40 30 20 IO 5 K MOST REV. A X understanding and counsel must be attributed to them Father Kolb plans the year's calendar with the Dean of boys, Father Keppeler, and the Dean of Girls, Sister M. Angels. X X X Notre Dame students owe much to the faculty for theirdedication and service. Priests from the Buffalo diocese, the Sisters of the Holy Cross, whose mother house is at St. Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Indiana, and a Consolata priest, Father Prina, from Turin, Italy, com- prise the teaching staff. These priests and sisters have devoted long hours to their pupils and will long be remembered for their excellent guid- ance. But more than being remembered, they will be appreciated. As we struggle through rigorous college courses, or seek a status in the business world, we shall gratefully acknowledge the influence, the dedication and the great service paid to us by these outstanding men and women. To them we dedicate our future, the lives for which they have so carefully prepared us during our four years at Notre Dame. - REV. EUGENE F. KOLB After carefully guiding the boys as Dean since his arrival at Notre Dame High School in 1957, Father Eugene Kolb this year has been entrusted with the responsible role of principal. Faithfully he has upheld Notre Dame's line standards while leading and guiding the students through the spiritual and scholastic achievements of the year. Truly, as a priest, he has led Notre Dame closer to God, and certainly, as an educational adviser, he has helped the students find the true road to success. His generosity and goodness will not be for- gotten. SISTER M. ANGELS, CSC Associate Principal, Dean of Girls, World History. -I Q '1i'::'E 1 5 QI t ' EES? Last fall the largest freshman class in the history of Notre Dame High School was enrolled. The size of this class has brought about the first phys- ical change to the school in that the cafeteria has been converted into a study hall for different periods during the day. These new students have already shown great promise in the field of scholastic achievement. Also, under the supervision of their class advisors they have become active participants in such extra-curricular activities as Glee club, athletics, GAA and the Nodahi. At this rate of progress the class of '65 will indeed be one of the finest classes to graduate from Notre Dame. Row I: Thomas Brown, J. Beaver, D. Balduf, J. Almeter, J. K, Adamczyk, C. Brown. With co-captains Sam Barone and Bill Lewis leading, the varsity gridders fought four of the scheduled games on our home field at McArthur Stadium. Although the odds were stacked high against the ND squad because of its great losses in injuries, the ,fighting spirit of the Little Irish was never dimmed. Cheering spirit grew with each tense game, proving once more, that with the will to win, we may be down but not out! Bill Lewis 3 X Qi ffglhfm ,W XKQXRSALM K 2 mlm Ll F 1 AWE MQW? Those participating re- ceived intramural credit, and the girls also received points toward their GAA pins. The boys were divided into eight teams with Dave Nowak and jim Messina acting as secretaries. Hold- ing the highest averages for the boys were Dave No- wak, Jack Sabatino, Tom Brown, Mike Reigly, and Bob Callahan. The high games of the season were bowled by Hugh Loftus, Dave Nowak, and Bob Callahan. Under the secretaryship of Donna Steggs 13 teams of bowlers alternately played each other and vied for high scores. Many awards were given at the end of the season, some of them being for high average, high game, high three-game total, and most gutter balls. A boys' team comprising the best bowlers in the school was entered in inter-scholastic competition in the spring in Buffalo. 36 juniors I fwnwwHI1r f 1 J'1xy'ff nf 1 ff 'rv-ev' ,,vv1 In all phases of activity at Notre Dame, this year's junior class has been a class of achievement. In October thirty-three juniors were inducted into the National Honor So- ciety. This was the largest number and highest percentage of students to re- ceive the symbolic gold cord in Notre Dame's history. They composed the core of this year's basketball team While also competing in football, cross country, track, wres- tling, baseball and in intramural ath- letics. The girls also participated in the athletics program with almost 1001, being members of the GAA and many being on the basketball, volley- ball and cheerleading squads. On the social scene, the juniors were very active. Several class parties were held and a pre-Lenten dance, March Melody was also sponsored. This is an organiza- tion whose purpose is to support the work of the missions with financial and spiritual help. Under the supervision of Father Martin and Sister Catherina the CSMC has sponsored many money raising projects. The annual HalloWe'en dance, the sale of Christmas cards and paper, Mission Day and the penny carnival have all proved to be successful endeavors. The money raised through these projects is sent to individual missionaries located throughout different parts of the globe. To provide spiritual aid for the missions each homeroom is assigned a weekday on which the mem- bers of that homeroom receive communion in a body for the intentions of the missions. Thus united in the CSMC the Notre Dame stu- dents attempt to do their part to promote the spread- ing of the faith. the csmc, CSMC REPRESENTATIVES-Row 1: M. Clancy, J. Paris, A. Rahn, G. Haitz, S. The newly organized French Club has drawn its members from the junior and senior classes. To be eligible for mem- bership students must now be taking their second year of French, or must have completed two years of that subject. Interesting programs were planned for each of the monthly meetings. The stu- dents took trips to Paris and the Riviera and other interesting places in France by means of movies, filmstrips, and discus- sions. Plays were also on the agenda, as well as guest speakers. The GAA with Sister Veronica as moderator ind officers, president Carol Sobolewskig secre- gary Constance Szymkowiak, and treasurer, Mary Perrone completed a very successful year. The first activity sponsored by the association was the volleyball intramurals. This seasonal event was followed with the selection of the girls' basketball team. To stimulate attendance at their games, the girls were given the oppor- tunity to earn points toward their individual awards presented at the mother-daughter ban- quet. The month of January saw an increase in the GAA's treasury as a result of a dance and raffle which realized a profit of almost 5500. Inter- scholastic volleyball was added to the curric- ulum to provide a new activity for the mem- bers. The team was selected in February and was expertly coached by Mrs. Branche. The spring season brought with it the lively baseball intramurals. All outside sports were combined into a field day held for all the members of the GAA. Religion, the most important element of our lives, has not been forgotten in the course of our years at Notre Dame. It is recognized by us as a necessity. It is taught, it is studied as any other subject, treated with a bit more reverence perhaps. Each class is be- gun with a prayer. Each day confessions are heard and Holy Communion is distributed. Every First Fri- day Mass is offered with the entire student body participating. Notre Dame's own sacristans prepare the altar and the vestments of the priest, and her altar boys assist the celebrant. The spiritual highlight of the year is the annual retreat, a time when each student reflects on his past life, resolves to better himself in the eyes of God and meditates on life after death. For those who further wish to consecrate their souls to God, the Third Order of Saint Francis has been established. Prayer and sacrifice are the main methods practiced by the Teritaries in their added attempt to gain eternal happiness. 59 Monsignor john Dempsey bestows the Papal Blessing at the close of the retreat. On October 17, 1961, john was summoned by Almighty God to join Him in that other life, that everlasting happiness which we seek, yet can not find on earth. Those of us who knew him well did not think him unfit to face deathg We did not know how to bear the thought of losing him. Spiritually we can feel his presence. Our own saint is watching carefully over us. And yet we long for the touch of a vanished hand, and the sound of a voice that is still.
