We are proud to have the opportunity to show our gratitude to this great servant of God. Cardinal O'Hara was a man who devoted his life to bringing the word of God to his fellow man. He realized that if people wish to make progress toward heavenly goals, toward God, they will need all of the guidance they can obtain. People can help themselves in a measure proportionate to their education. In his realization of this, Cardinal O'Hara sought to find ways to make available the best type of schools in his diocese. Therefore he approved and directed the building of many Catholic high schools in the Buffalo region. Catholic education was and is his answer in helping us get to heaven. Notre Dame in Batavia was among the new schools that were built. It was ded- icated to the Mother of God in 1952. Since that time seven classes have been graduated. At first, the building of a new Catholic high school in this area seemed to be an enormous undertaking, but Cardinal O'Hara knew that God would show him the way. God certainly recognized the needs of the people in this area. By dedicating Mater Dei to Cardinal O'Hara, we have found a way to formally acknowledge, and express gratitude for, the foresight, ambition, perseverance, and Godliness of this fine man who died August 28, 1960. May he rest in peace. 2 4 Mater De: Mother o God' What an une able tatle' The grace o the drvxne matermty as the leey whach opens up to weak human scrutmy the untold rxches o Marys soul as at as lzleewase a challenge commandtng or her the utmost reverence o every creature She alone by her dzgnaty transcends heaven and earth None among created hezngs vustlvle or tnvzsahle can compare wtth her in excellence She is at once the handmaxd and the Mother o God a Vargxn and yet a Mother Pope Plus XII Tahle o Contents DCdlCatlOH Admmlstratlon Underclassmen Senlors ACtlVltlCS Sports Advertisements 80 l 3 l e if if I A .ff .I f .. ., 4 4 ' I - ' f ' i y 41 g. . .f 1, I y s . . 2 .. . 7 15 ' 31 . .. 65 Vifzif , . ,fm if , f if Ea ? , E, QV Kg-lf 9 12' sis 'V 5 A +z1':Qw, 2 3 :L I 5' ,,..E Vw. -, V Vg, ,N I -L V E .3- , ,KV 1 . - , 1 lk 5 mv V V V Ee Y g xi :J 'fi 21 E if ww 2 V 1 E Q 5525552 J 25 fa. .gimf 2 if 4 25251 eq E ' V . xx bg.: 5 E E E E ..-4 L. Herlihy One of the reasons for the continual growth and development of our relatively young school is the guid- ance and sincere interest of our principal, the Very Reverend Monsignor David P. Herlihy. From the first moments of our education here the seniors were proud to be called students of Notre Dame, and Monsignor has always been one of the reasons for our deep-rooted feeling. During freshman year his presence did much to elim- inate the confusion that surrounded us and to impress us with the Notre Dame spirit. As sophomores we came to know him a little better. We soon saw that Mon- signor Herlihy was a priest endowed with warmth, sincerity, and zeal. Even at this early stage, we were aware of his constant interest in everything at Notre Dame. During our junior and senior years his name was almost synonymous with Notre Dame. We fully realize that every Notre Dame student owes him a debt of gratitude, but none are more conscious of this than the seniors. May Our Lord watch over you, Monsignor, and grant that your future years be spent in happiness, contentment, and that peace of mind attained only through complete devotion to the work of Christ. Freshmen One of the biggest and most challeng- ing steps that a young teenager takes is entering his freshman year in high school. It is the beginning of the transition period from childhood to mature adulthood, and as such it is important that freshmen use this time to their best advantage. The present freshman class has shown much promise in scholastic fields, and if they continue to do so, will accomplish great things at Notre Dame. They have been ably guided by their moderators, Sister M. Veronica and Father Skupien. Terence Gage Row I: M. Becker, J. Brown, B. Buckenmeyer, B. nitti, D. Bermingham, A. Allenza, C. Religious Activities Every year at Notre Dame religion takes an active part in the lives of all its students. An important activity in which all stu- dents participate is the annual retreat. It is a time when everyone devotes his school day to God, thinking of religious teachings and ways in which he may better himself spiritually. Before lunch period each day Holy Communion is distributed in the chapel. Each month on the First Friday, Mass is said for the student body in the gym.
