It does not cease until our death. It is the purpose of MATER DEI for 1958 to recapture pictorially the events of our Quest which, We, the Seniors, experienced during this present school year. Here, assisted by a Wise and conscientious faculty, we have moved along the path which will ultimately lead to never-ending happi- ness. Through scholastic pursuits and social activities We have sought happiness and our Quest has not been in vain. Here We have learned the secret of lasting joy. We know that it will come only through the Mediatrix of all Graces, Notre Dame. 2 Qi: 419735. Mary Lu Bernard, Editor , . THE QUEST INVOLVES. I Dur Daggett appraises the still life interpretation being done by Pat Horgan in art class. The Arts Sister Mary Avelina, C.S.C. stresses the importance of language study to the English Regents class. IO Mrs. Samuel Pies Art A Basis For Life No education is complete unless it com- prises the arts and the sciences. Subject matter must be so arranged and ordered that it will appeal to the heart and the mind of each student. At Notre Dame both the useful arts and the fine arts are a part of the curriculum. Languages, both modern and classical, literature, drawing, painting and music are taught daily. Through his study ofthe arts the student gains Huency and expression so necessary to successful living. A devoted faculty endeavors to supply those principles which serve as a basis for life. Reverend Charles A. Schoy, Religion Ilg Religion IIIg Guidanceg General Science. The Foundation of Modern Progress A Century ago the activities commonly known as the three R's, were all that society demanded as essential to an edu- cation. But, progress across the years has made learning the sciences a must. During their four years at Notre Dame, students learn the science of Religion as taught by the diocesan priests. They absorb the tenets of the Catholic religion and the application of Christian principles to everyday living. They also follow courses in pure science, applied science, social science and business administra- tion. All are part of the plan to prepare each for living happily in an age of mod- ern progress and atomic era. Reverend Lee J. Mays, Re- ligion Illg Elementary Alge- brag Intermediate Algebra. Cherished Moments Each First Friday finds the students gathering in the auditorium to assist at Holy Mass. This privilege is accompanied by the opportunity to receive the sacra- ment of Penance before Mass. The stu- dents receive the sacrament of Holy Eu- charist in a body during the Holy Sacri- Hee. The students eagerly await this month- ly assembly, and First Fridays become precious moments in their school life. FIRST FRIDAY MASS Serving Mass in the school chapel are John Chudy and William Howard. Our Acolytes Notre Dame is fortunate in having among its boy enrollment a number of acolytes. On call at any time during the school day, these altar boys assist the priest at Mass, Benediction and daily distribution of the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel during lunch hour. ANNUAL DAYS CF PRAYER We Resolve Each year every student at Notre Dame makes a retreat of three days. Dur- ing this time scholastic and social activi- ties are put asideg talking with God be- comes primary. Conferences are given by an experi- enced retreat master. The retreatants also have the opportunity of reciting the ro- sary, making the Way of the Cross, and spending time in mental prayer. These three days of meditation give ample time to review the past and make resolutions for the future which will prove beneficial long after school days are over. Jo Ann Stephens, Sharon Woodward, Al Repicci and Doug Stewart count the proceeds of the CSMC Penny Carnival. Father Martin distributes Holy Communion on a day of recollection. Reverend Mathias Manley, O.F. M., Retreat Master Mission Moments Under the direction of Sister Justine Marie, several new projects were spon- sored by the CSMC 1957-58. On January 23, a Penny Carnival was held with a record hop following it. Two booths were operated' by each home room, among these were ping pong, bowling, a fun house and pop corn. A puppy was railed and won by Father Martin. A profit of 1112 was realized. MATER DEI staff includes: Inner rirzle sealed: V. Gautieri, M. Cunningham, C. Bundy, M. Bernard, M. Gerace, E. Curry, S. Sfuclent S1'a1'esmen Democratic government is the basis for order. Notre Dame has this govern- ment in form of the Student council. Since it is democratic, students elect homeroom delegates to represent their homerooms and discuss their problems at bimonthly meetings. After a week of campaigning in the fall, the president of the Council is elected by the sophomores, juniors and seniors and presides over these meetings. He has the help of the vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. The Council expresses the Wishes of the students and creates better teacher- student relations. The Student Council ofiicers are: Secretary, Helen Bundy, Treasurer, Larry Darchg Vice-President, Susan Roachg President, Philip Pilato. 58 With Books Every period, day in and out, faithful students come to the aid of Sister Avelina, librarian. Among their duties are the processing of new books, checking them in and out for students and supervising the use ofthe library. In doing this they rend- er service to the school, and build a back- ground ofliterature enrichment for them- selves. Learning to sing the music of the Church has been the chief objective of the group this year, conse- quently giving the choristers the oppor- tunity, not only of using this achievement in the Christmas Program and the Spring Concert, but also in singing the First Fri- day Mass each month. The songsters also had the privilege of singing the First Solemn Mass of Reverend Paul Whitney at St. Mary's Church. Although the major part of each pro- gram was performed with combined voices, some choruses were sung sepa- rately by the girls and others by the boys. Three weeks of playoffs were conducted before the actual team was chosen. Many of Sister Bernard Marie's old pros from the preceding lay-up season again quali- fied. However, impressive new talent was also discovered. Each Tuesday and Thurs- day found the squad vigorously drilling and playing under the watchful eye of the coach. By November a full schedule was announced by manager, Gail Pastore. Then competition began. The girls held up well. Impressive victories were record- ed throughout the season. An overtime defeat at the hands of DeSales in January was avenged the following month. High hopes are held for the continuance of this new phase of girls' athletics. 1957-58 Basketball Schedule Dec. 3 Sacred Heart at ND Dec. Spring brings stored tennis rackets and balls into outdoor use. Although tennis is not a major girls' sport at Notre Dame, it doesnlt lack for enthusiasm and effort in the gym classes. The girls at the right are warming up after long winter months. fm all V.-ar: 74 Judy Thrasher and Nancy Starrett. Mrs. Jay directs the building of a pyramid, a project obviously enjoyed by the girls. Keeping Fit Each Monday and Wednesday finds the young ladies of Notre Dame transported from their daily study to a lively session in gym. This year Notre Dame once again wel- comed Mrs. Jay as the girls' Physical Education teacher. Under her direction the gym resounded with guard that man,', tuck your head in, that's no way to make a forward roll, and various other sporting idioms. Handicapped by huge gym classes, Mrs. Jay managed to keep them interest- ing. Through her efforts and guidance, Brockport, her alma mater, has recruited several prospective students. All in all, Notre Dame is lucky to number among its faculty this wonderful teacher. Putting their all into a rousing JV cheer are squad members Elva Bundy, Bev Kowalik, Mary Ann Rogowski, Sharon Len- non, Sharon Woodward, janet Hedtke, Pat Tartarka and center, Eva Bundy. f 4- Mrs. Ruth Jay, Girls' Physical Fall saw the girls take to the field for soccer. We, as seniors, have found happiness in being taught Christian Principles for Christian living. We have learned that a wider world awaits us where we shall be obliged to practice the lessons so admirably taught by a beloved faculty. Thus the Quest for us con- tinues. We go forward with hope and courage in our hearts. The pattern of the search is indelibly engraved within our souls. If we but be true to Alma Mater and all that she symbolizes, we will find that the Quest for Happiness in our wider world will lead to the eternal glory in a heavenly one.
