Auxiliary Bishop of Buffalo V Our Lady ' s School IN 1951 Notre Dame held classes in Saint Anthony ' s School with two Sisters of Mercy and the Reverend Jo- seph Jensen as principal. In late October Father Jensen was taken ill. The late Rever- end John E. Nugent took over until December when the pres- ent principal, the Reverend David P. Herlihy came. In September, 1952, the students moved into the new building at the corner of Rich- mond and Union with Father Herlihy as principal, five Holy Cross Sisters, two Con- solata Fathers and a diocesan priest. September, 1953, brought another class to Notre Dame as well as another diocesan priest and three new sisters. 1954 came. The first sen- ior class was formed. There are two more diocesan priests, five new sisters, and a lay math teacher. Now, as the very first graduation ap- proaches, the faculty numbers eighteen, and the high school uses the whole building. These priests direct its life AS superintendent of all Catholic schools in the Buffalo diocese, Mon- signor Holbel, also directs and supervises the curriculum. Monsignor co-ordinates the course of studies to maintain the same high standards throughout the schools un- der his direction. All the exams we write come from his office. Here at Notre Dame our principal, Father Herlihy, ex- ecutes the directives emanating from the desk of the Monsignor. Father is also a friend to each of the students and with a guiding and loving hand aids us in our slightest need. Carmel the stu- dents in the Business De- partment study about the problems and ways of the business world. Here they are being prepared not only to be efficient work- ers, whether in taking the speedy dictation of a boss, and then in tran- scribing these hasty notes, in calculating the month ' s expenditures, in keeping the books of an enterprise, or in just plain filing letters, but also to bring Jesus and Mary to fellow workers through good ex- ample. These, then, are the aims of the Business Department. Our Lady of Light, direct Notre Dame ' s business classes. His classes and laboratory periods are full of inter- esting sidelights that cannot be found in a text book. The freshmen classes in general science are taught by Father Rutecki and Mr. Hillis. These are also supplemented by laboratory periods. Physics is being taught for the first time this year to the senior science majors. ABOVE: As you can see, the heart is really only a muscle. Lucy and Sister Sarah Marie, is concerned with the past and present conditions of our world of which Mary is Queen. The aim of the sen- ior course is to acquaint the students with the Catholic viewpoints on social problems. The juniors and sophomores study American and World History respec- tively. The freshmen learn about Christian Living in Our Economic World. 19 We learn to make a Mary-like home ), ' -! E THE future homemakers of Notre Dame are being trained in the arts of a truly Catholic home in the home economics de- partment of Notre Dame. The girls have learned this year to cook everything from cherry pies to a complete dinner. During the year they sponsored a fudge sale for the benefit of the Missions. The second se- mester was devoted to sew- ing; aprons and skirts were the favorites of most stu- dents. One of the more pressing problems of this department has been to decide how to use two nylon parachutes which Father Herlihy gave to them. Mary, Queen of the home, make them Homemakers after your pattern. fk MB --  . ABOVE: Ready to taste a fresh from the oven peach pie are Barbara Kearney and Joyce Casper. N. The members of this organization include a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer elected by the student body; the president and vice-president of each homeroom; and a representative from the school paper, the Glee Club, and Notre Dame Athletic Council. Among the many activities sponsored by this group is a corridor commit- tee which helps keep order in the halls. Most dances have been under the auspices of the Stu- dent Council as have assemblies and other pro- grams. Seat of Wisdom, direct our Student Council. Discussing their school ' s problems with a light heart are Student Council officers: William Heisler, vice-president; Barbara Lathan, secretary; Carol Lathan, president; and Edward Tatarka, treasurer. Make us apostles of the word. Queen of the Apostles NAMED for the Mother of God because it or- iginated at Mary ' s school in Mary ' s country during Mary ' s year, MATER DEI strives to make of its staff members apostles of the Word. In the few short years of its existence NODAHI has captured many awards. In 1954 it won first honors in the Catholic Schools Press Association and the special at Saint Bonaventure University for the best mimeographed publication entered in their contest. Although the team won only one game in a series of six, the Little Irish showed much im- provement over last year. In the first game this was evi- dent in the blocking and tackling, running and passing, and an all-out better knowl- edge of the game. With the assistance of Mr. Pietrovito and Mr. Martino, Coach Hillis had an easier task of coaching for- ty boys. The game of the year was with LeRoy which ended in a 32 to victory. DESPITE the rugged com- petition and the lack of height, the Notre Dame Cagers struggled through a fair sea- son. The combining of the Western New York Catholic League and the Manhattan Cup League made the competition stronger. The team, com- posed of nine seniors, one junior, and two sophomores, elected as their captains, Neil Moag and John Hulburt. The squad gave their old ri- vals, St. Mary ' s of Lancaster, a good trouncing, and upset highly regarded Ryan. Notre Dame finished with two wins and sixteen defeats. A record was set by the squad for mak- ing the most free throws in the league, 209. Hulburt, Moag, and Kosiorek proved to be the iron men of the team.
