The ground isn't the only thing that is blanketed when we hear the magic words, No school, today! over the radio. Margaret Redmond, Mary Corr and Mary Lou Gibson lead our annual May Procession around our beautiful s ' ' prmg campus. The Glee Club sing- ing hymns to Our Lady follows the flag bearers. OW Siege feiiinfgf We N.4zfmfe3L0afe!z'er1 Above: Our Lady, Queen of Heaven, begins her rule over her little American realm at Moylan in early September. Below: Here is the view of the Turret that greets our sleepy eyes at 9:00 each morning. Situated in the midst of MoylanfRose Valley in Delaware County are the thirteen aeres of magniiiecnt campus which surround Notre Dame Catholic Girls' High School. A thirtyfminute train ride from Phila' delphia will hring you to the collegiate huilding of Gothic architecture and Fox' croft stone walls. Beautiful old trees, hroad lawns that slope down to the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes on the south and to the athlctie field on the north, draw many ad' mirers to the school's grounds. Fourteen hundred and eightyffive girls coming from 47 parishes hy means of 23 schoolfhus routes, huses, trolleys, and trains arrive for classes held under the guidance of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. During the nine periods of the school day, each girl, whether in the Commercial, Aeaf demie, Seienee, Art or HomefEconomiCs course, is learning something to aid her in her role as a model young Catholic woman. From the Grand Court the statue of Our Lady, Queen of Heaven, watches over the students who pray to their patroness in the words of their school motto: Mary, he the light of our way! 4 sq,-K N ur ,god in Me greaf lrama THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE The curtain is rising! After many a long rehearsal the seniors are about to step out upon the stage of womanhood to take their role in The American Way of Life. ' The opening day has come. This lavish production which has been four years in the making will feature many settings -the business office, the college campus, the home, the hospital, the laboratory, the classroom. As we wait for our entrance cue, we remember with gratitude the untiring zeal and self-sacrifice of the Producers and Directors of our rehearsals--our Diocesan Superintendents who planned so carefully our daily program, and our Faculty who prepared each girlithoroughly for the role she will play. Here in the 1956 MARYSCRIPT we take you backstage to glimpse our rehearsals. We will go into classes with the stars and see the part each hour of instruction has played in our formation. And you will notice the invaluable lessons of fair play, true citizenship, and justice strengthened through work and play. We are eager to begin our part in The American Way of Life. May we never forget the lessons we have learned. May we love our part in this great Christian drama and exercise with joy the God-given rights of free- dom of religion, freedom of press, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom to live The American Way of Life. It starts our day in a most befitting way. Freshmen gain a deeper knowledge and love of Christ, by studying His life and Sacred Passion, and the doctrine that He taught to men. Sophomores learn the history of the Church that Christ founded, and study the means by which the grace of Christ comes to us-the Sacraments and prayer. Juniors begin to realize the many duties pointed out by the commandments and the precepts that govern all of Christ's followers. The Seniors study Apologetics, gaining a knowlf edge of our faith based on reason and logical proofs. To prepare for our vocation as wives and mothers, Seniors also study the graces given to us in the Sacraf ment of Matrimony and the responsibilities of the married state. Has someone invaded Notre Dame? No, just another of Miss Micka's lively Monday morning gym classes starting oif on the right foot with exercises to music. With a shrill blow of her whistle we went into action, touching our toes fouchlj, bending our knees fcracklj, stretching our arms, and enduring other musclefstretchers designed to make us spry and cheerful. In the Fall we enjoyed square dancing, and the ever' popular Mexican Hat Dance. Can we ever forget Miss Micka's restrained seriousity ? During the cold months of winter we warmed ourselves by indoor sports: volley' ball, basketball, pingfpong, and dodge ball. In Spring we frolicked in the outfoffdoors. Some, who were athletically inclined, joined in the relay races and softball playing, while others with less enthusiasm for sports enjoyed jumpingfrope, a reminder of grammar school days. With pinnies clean and sneakers laced, the members of the Leaders Club assisted Miss Micka by checking attendance and maintaining order in the gym. Their hard work helped to keep gym periods functioning smoothly and made more enjoyable the sports of the year. Tryouts for the annual Field Day were held in every gym class, with all girls competing in the broad jump, hop, skip and jump, basketball, softball throws, relays and other events.
